944S2 Track Car Project - Spa April 2019

Fronts are 6.5 [link=http://www.944racing.de/felgengewichte.php]A useful wheel reference with weights[/link] and [link=http://www.wheelenhancement.com/index.php?t=Wheels]Nice pics of all the Porsche wheels[/link] are useful

Cracked my splitter a few weeks ago [] - the curb was higher than I thought, and the car sits a bit lower at the front now...

being a cheapskate I thought it was worth fixing rather than replacing

after all - most race cars use plywood splitters don't they? [:D]

D.I.Y. to the rescue! hope your going to treat the ends so the don't get damp and rot [:D][:D] I know how you feel though, being lower is something I am having to get used too as well, caught the front twice (gently) already on both occassions leaving a driveway (different ones) on an incline joining highway Nervous about the sleeping policemen, as well as the pesky ones with radar's []

The ply was soaked in preservative for a couple of days so should be fine The car doesn't get wet all that often either

might last longer than the rest of the car...at least it won't rust [:D] I'm all ready for Bedford now - can't wait!

er....no idea - some builders are doing work on our house at the moment - he provided the treated ply for me All I can tell you is I glued it on with some black extra sticky external waterproof adhesive stuff and sprayed with halfords satin black paint [:D]

ORIGINAL: edh There's also Alex (Lizard Logistics) who makes a living out of ferrying crashed cars back from the 'ring and Spa, so one way or another I would have sorted it.
& in the crashed pic Ed is actually parked behind my truck & trailer! ramps are down ready to have loaded him straight on ;) took a GT2 back in the end as well as the racer I took out & my track car was driven back

I thought it was about time I updated this... Some of you will have gathered that Bedford wasn't the happiest of adventures..... Accelerating down the main straight, approx 110 mph, I saw a huge cloud of smoke from behind the car. As I slowed my first thought was headgasket, but then it was clear that the fluid running up the windscreen was oil! [:(]. I pulled off as soon as I could, but still left a fairly long trail of oil on the circuit. When we got the car back to the paddock the oil filter was very loose. No other signs of a problem, no damaged hoses, so with the agreement of the TDO's I went off to Bedford, bought a new filter & oil (and loads of degreaser & paper towels for a cleanup) and was back on the track later that afternoon. All fine until 4.50 when it happened again []. I guess I wasn't too popular the first time round, so the second time was very embarrassing. Here's a photo when it was working..

Anyway, I had enough oil left to refill the car, and the engine seemed to have survived - not like Phil's S2, which had also let go during the day. TonyF suggested the OPRV was the possible culprit, and seemed to be the only explanation to be honest. It's possible that my engine flush dislodged something that stuck the valve? I don't know. £273 (inc discount!) later, I had a new OPRV fitted, and another £100 saw a 10bar oil pressure gauge fitted with peak hold. Cold pressures were pretty high at 8+ bar & I decided to switch to 10w40 for my next outing at Cadwell (with the same TDO). Cold pressures reached 7 bar with some revs but quickly stabilised to 4 to 5 when warm. The car was perfect at Cadwell, bar a bit of play in the steering, which knocked on lock when going slowly. There's some play in the upper joint, so I replaced it with a JMG special one. I still can go a lot faster at Cadwell but I'm getting more confident in this car. ..and so back to Donington

Started damp but soon dried. 170 track miles & a great day. I had 30 mins tuition with Mike Wilds - not only did he show me some faster lines, he took over for a few laps and I could see just how fast my car can go... In summary he wanted me to be earlier in a few corners & be more aggressive getting on the throttle. I read a comment from Neil along these lines on andy97's 924S racecar thread as well. His lines worked & definitely made me faster. I've never really been happy with my line through macleans, but his earlier turn made so much more sense. I'd certainly recommend him for instruction - seems a cut above your typical TD instructor... I'm left with another slight problem to sort (cracked downpipe to get welded) and the car will be ready for Silverstone on the 14th. Apart from that, it's good to see how much hammer this car can take - even losing over half its oil (twice) hasn't been a problem so far. The old AD08's are pretty low now, but stand up so well on the track. I have a fresh set to use over the winter when I might need a bit more tread depth to clear the water - just hope it's dry at Spa [:D]

Hi Ed glad to see the it going well again and having met Mike Wilds, not for instruction, I must say what a nice guy he is too!

Great to hear it seems to have solved the mystery. Must admit it still baffles me why the oil filter was the point that the pressure chose to exit! Can't believe you have more to learn, you were incredibly fast around Bedford when it was working. [:)]

Car looks superb!Glad it's all good now,Mr Wilds is a driving god,and an absoloute gent aswell,I would love a lesson with him one of these days.Still loving those wheels a very tasteful choice.

Paul - you're too kind....but if you take a trip out with a proper driver you'll see how far off the pace I am [:D] I'm glad it was the oil filter that blew - much easier to fix than any of the engine oil seals. Mark - which wheels do you prefer though? - the Boxster or Cayman ones ? The car does look so nice - I think the ride height & camber are spot on & set it off so well. The wheels are 8J ET40 so slightly wider track particularly for the fronts. I have it garaged away from my house now, so when it's on my drive I keep going out just to look at it - not bad for a £2k 23 year old car I think... Andy - see you at Silverstone [:D]

Mike Wilds, [link=http://www.mikewilds.com/]his website[/link]- he was very nice about my driving (and of course then proceeded to show me how much better it could be..) Very nice chap and I'd be keen to do more trackdays where he was instructing. Opentrack include instruction (and photos, and tea/biscuits) as part of the package. His day rate is quite reasonable as well at £450 for two people (less than mine anyway...) If I ever feel rich enough to go racing, he's exactly the sort of person I'd go to.

Looks epic,I like the five spoke twin spoke wheels in top pic, really go with the car,I bet people will copy that look[8|] I would like to build a similar car again one day, maybe out of a Turbo, road legal track beast, maybe able to race lightly ...?[8|] I always look fondly at my 944s when parked outside ,very special cars to me anyway, getting less seen on the roads these days I think?

Great to hear that the engine has survived those two traumas and is still in fine fettle Ed. That car was an absolute bargain for only £2k [8D]
