944S2 Track Car Project - Spa April 2019

All ready for Bedford in March [:)] Please try to have it looking a bit grubbier by then, it is a track car after all [;)]

Time for an update... I finally got round to replacing the KW springs with some slightly stiffer ones, bought from Dave Walsh earlier this year Front - 80Nm / 447lb Rear - 70Nm / 391lb Standard are 60/50, plus the rear torsion bar. I went for these primarily to try and reduce body roll - I occasionally got some mid-corner oversteer in fast corners, which can be a bit disconcerting when you're on the edge of grip going through Craner curves [:-] Removing the spring from the rear shock is a bit awkward - the top mount has to be screwed off. I had some new top mount bushes to go in at the same time as the old ones were looking a bit tired, & there was a knock from that area after the Spa crash. I chickened out & sent them off to my local garage [:D] The shocks are still in very good condition after 5 years & 10k+ miles - the spring seats move easily on the threaded bodies. The only corrosion was on the nuts for the ABS earth wires..

I suppose I could have made them a bit more shiny, but that wouldn't make it go any faster... I re-set the ride height, which took a while. Surprisingly the spring platforms had to move quite a way.. The rears are set so that the helper spring goes fully coil bound when the car is on the ground, and starts to expand pretty much as soon as the body of the car starts to lift. This is the accepted method for setting up the rears as explained to me by EMC (and confirmed by Promax). I decided to lower the front a bit more, giving the car a bit more of a nose-down stance. I also whacked on a load more front camber. I got the front geo checked & set to -3 camber with parallel toe (in fact they didn't change the camber as by sheer luck I had already got it at -3!) Ready for Donington

...and back home

Although it was drier than the average day in 2012, Donington was a bit wet... It rained on & off through the day and never dried out. It was one of the most challenging track days I've ever done as the grip & track conditions changed from corner to corner and from lap to lap.. I was caught out early on when I got on the power in third coming out of Coppice & promptly found myself on the grass / swamp [8|]. I managed to keep it going and avoid the ignominy of a red flag, but it did make the car rather dirty. I took that corner in fourth for the rest of the day [:D] Just under 150 track miles (approx 75 laps) and tank of fuel - I was pretty tired when I got home. I find the S2 is quicker to break traction than the turbo was - no understeer on corner entry, but you had to be careful on the way out, particularly Redgate and Coppice. The lefthander after old hairpin (Schwantz) was also very slippy, which is a bit tricky as you go through there flat, even in the wet. Mike came along and took loads of great pics - here are a few. I like the ones where you can see a bit of the surrounding circuit to give the car a bit of context. The one in the pit lane is my favourite.

Must say the car felt very poised, plenty of grip and go, all nicely controlled and that goes for the driving too. Very smooth Ed, and thanks for the laps would love to do it again in the warm and dry! There is a clip on YouTube with you rejoining the circuit from the grass, Mattoc s compilation one, see the PH thread for the link.

I was keeping quiet about that one [:)] The other red 944 is on that clip as well

That's Ok Mike - I won't mention that you asked me whether it was a 220 or a 250.... [:D]

ORIGINAL: Neil Haughey The insurance thing is a big issue with track driving that many seem to forget about until they are in to deep. I was paying for fully comp race day insurance as I just couldn't stomach a total loss on my race car. The stupid thing is I set the excess too high, didn't claim on it when I did crash but ended up spending up to the excess in the rebuild anyway (£5K) as these things always end up doubling or tripling. My road and track driver cover though is very reasonable, after the 4 freebies are used up its only 0.5% of the value for each day with an excess at ISTR 5% (may have increased a bit but was still small). This makes cars with a value between £10K and £20K very viable for track days with comprehensive cover. Stuff up at the £100K level though will be very expensive to track due to the huge excess and day rate. The peace of mind is well worth it IMHO, just don't want to be taken out by some idiot and left with nothing.
Maybe on a race car, when you have more preparation, but on a trackday car finding a replacement shell wouldnt be that tricky there are cars out there with knackered engines and good sills and provided you are a bit handy with spanners swapping over bits shouldn't be too time consuming, can always put later running gear into an early shell as well. I have just read this thread from the very first post to the final one. It certainly seems like it has been a journey! Plenty of fun too! I used to be part of the 17" Porkers can't handle brigade until driving my new purchase. My S2 was very skittish on the road, with this car being surprisingly planted! MarkK's LR specced red Turbo was great on the 16" wheels I must confess. Are the Boxster 17" wheels not lighter than a number of wheels available for the 944?

Yes - the 17" 8J Boxster II / Cayman wheels are nice & light - around 9kg. I have a set of the Cayman wheels now, ready for some new AD08's to be fitted before Bedford. Having 2 sets of wheels means I can run the existing tyres right down on dry trackdays while still being able to drive home. So I reckon it's an economy measure as i get more life out of my tyres [:D]

Time for the S2 to get a service - oil, plugs and air filter... The K&N filter hasn't been touched in years [:'(]

but cleaned up OK

and oiled (is that enough?)

To be honest I think it's a bit of a faff & I'd rather just replace a paper filter, but this is what the car came with, and I don't have an air box. oil flushed with Forte - after the discussion on decarbonising.. Compressions before - 180, 190, 175, 170 And after 192, 198, 180, 187 nearly ready for Bedford, just need to fit...

Cayman rears, all 8J, fitted with AD08's. I have 2 sets now, the other set is down to approx 2-3mm, so I'll save them for some dry trackdays and get the maximum wear out of them.

ORIGINAL: MarkK May I say you have superb taste in wheels sir, looks SO pretty[:)]
Thanks Mark The car is stored at my father in law's house now, so i don't see it so often. I had it home for a few days this weekend & kept sneaking looks at it [:D] Looks nicer with proper door handles & mirrors I think, and the ride height sets it off well. I have a bit of a thing for wheels - I tried the Cayman rims on the Boxster - not nice

It came with 18's
2013-04-01153314_zpse607fcd1.jpg
But I think the standard wheels are nicer - I just bought this set

What a great noise the flat six makes! - it's all induction noise so far but I'm planning to get a Carnewal exhaust at some point so I can add exhaust noise into the mix [:D]

Ed, S2 looks good with those wheels, I still prefer the look of the 18"s on the Boxter Mmmmm.........wonder what the Cayman wheels would like in the colour scheme of the 18"s?

I'm surprised the Cayman wheels suit the styling of the 944 but I think they do............however, more importantly how much do they weigh? [;)]
