944S2 Track Car Project - Spa April 2019

If only it was still a 2k car though....I've probably spent double that in 2 years. It is a great road legal track car though - compliant enough for the road but sharp enough for the track. ...and I bet there's not many people running a 234k mile track car [:D]

edh , your 944 looks well now , really good condition . What did you do with the Cup mirrors and 968 handles ? Have you sold them ? I must say that the first pictures on this thread , your 944 looked really well , with those wheels and the cup mirrors and 968 handles . Each to there own taste .

Looks much nicer now....proper 944 mirrors & handles [:D] the extra black bits balance the red in my opinion. I sold the others some time back sorry.

I think it's time for an update... As I've covered in some other threads, the car had an oil pickup failure at Spa in autumn 2013. This left the top end very very noisy. I decided that rather than try and get the engine rebuilt, I'd look for another engine. I found one - that came from Tam Lin's (Sean's) 924S track car. It had done very little mileage since it was built at Promax. It seemed to make much better sense financially, as my 230k engine would certainly warrant a comprehensive rebuild which would have cost thousands. It took a while, but with lots of help from friends I finally got it all together and back on the road for Rutland this year. Yesterday I took the 944 to Oulton for the first track day since Spa, and it didn't disappoint. The car handles really well and felt sharp. The new engine certainly feels stronger than the old one. The gearchange is much improved with a semi solid mount & the only944 lever / shifter. There were a few niggles - a very slight coolant leak that I traced to the hose on the waterpump plastic elbow, and a long pedal after a lengthy session including several laps with a 308GT4 race car (Front pads v low and really needs new brake fluid). The gearbox is a bit noisy, I suppose an oil change might be due. My plans now are to sort the brakes (PFC 11 or 08's / Motul RBF) and use it [:D] Since it broke, I've been using my Boxster on track days, and have been really impressed with it. Not sure if I will be keeping the Boxster now - I guess I will need some warmth and sunshine to persuade me.

Blyton Park this Friday with the Motorpunk 18-30 lot - I believe that there's still spaces for either car ;)

Just ordered PFC 08's, Sebro discs and ATE fluid, ready to go on before a visit to Curborough next Thursday. Incidentally, I ordered the discs from carparts4less on a free 4 day delivery. Ordered at 4.11pm, arrived 8 a.m. the next day!

There's a little PS fluid leak in need to fix as well, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the car compares with the Boxster around Curborough.

(Boxster has a split inner CV boot - looks like a day's work to replace a £10 part! [8|] )

Looking forward to next week Ed, it looks like we might have a little 924/44 showdown on our hands! :p

Will be be good to have a sit in yours to see how the KW's compare to my Bilstein's... I did a day at Oulton last week and the car now handles superbly, but is a bit under-tyred at the moment. That just made it more fun though!

Car was great at Curborough - although the PFC pads produce tons of dust when used from cold... I did very similar times to the Boxster, although struggled with traction out of the 2nd gear corners. A diff would help, but it's not cheap so isn't going to happen any time soon.

There are Audi Torsen differentials which will fit with a little machining... Far cheaper, but not quite as accessible.

Come on now Ed, no excuses for not smartening those brake ducts up ;)

£33! Am I made of money? [:)] The carbon-look plastic will do me just fine thanks Dave

Simon - I've never heard of the Audi diff being fitted, although a proper plate diff would be better anyway I think, giving me some more stability under braking as well. A new box might be on the cards next year or two, depending on funds. This one is quite noisy. That would be the time to do it properly.
