968 caster (castor?) mounts ~ worth it if not upgrading wheels?

Been reading THIS THREAD

I'm not intending to go mad upgrading our S2 ~ want to keep it pretty much standard, and its not a track toy. It's therefore staying on the std 16" Design 90s and I'm not planning to fling a wad at an M030 setup (or similar).

BUT...... still feel the car is very succeptible to tramlining / very camber sensitive (depending how you want to describe it). It's much better since I had the geometry adjusted properly, but it's still "frisky" at times. Changed lanes on a heavily crowned dual carriageway at *ahem* mph the other day and the car dived at least 18" off my intended line.

So...... are the 968 mounts worth it for std setup? I know they're not that expensive (£80 odds covers both sides) but I'll need the castor reset, and need to take time out to do it...... neither of which is that appealing if it makes no real difference.

Thanks in advance folks [8D]

Will tell, you in 6 weeks time :eek:D

p.s. we need to nail down a time for our first meet, its getting on now.

I have not heard of anyone doing it with 16" wheels, but I am also planning this on my Turbo with 16s. I think it will have to help because the existing big rubber mounts are 15 years old anyway. I clearly felt the difference on my S2 when I fitted 17s

You can change them without disturbing the settings if you are careful:

1. Loosen and remove the nut at the rear of the mount keeping the black adjuster tab still with a spanner. The front nut should stop it from moveing anyway.

2. Remove the two vertical bolts holding the mount to the chassis.

3. Slide the mount towards the rear of the car and clear of the eccentric bolt.

4. Slide the new mount on and redo everthing in reverse. If the black tab on the centric is not moved then you have not affected the castor [:)]

Oh I can't wait that long ~ someone must have done it already? [&:] (is that a "confused" smiley thing?)

Yeah - lets firm up on the 2nd WoSPOCs meeting of the year. [;)]

When was the first one????

Thanks Paul - that does sound feasible..... (assuming the centres of new and old are in the same position of course). Worth a try anyway.

I'm with you that it should help, and it can't (of course) do any harm. Just wanted confirmation from "someone who'd done it". Preferably whilst changing nothing else.....

May well stick this on my wishlist....... are these OPC-only or can you get them from the likes of Berlyn?

Cheers! [:D]

Last saturday, you were washing your hair or something [:)]

We spent an hour comparing the size of each others - shims that is [;)]

The castor bushes are £35.34 each + VAT ,from an OPC
But if your a PCGB member you should get 10% discount .
Unless anybody can get them cheaper.????

I have just enquired about these + other bits from OPC Kendal, as i intend on "doing"them soon....

I've done it of course [8|] (on the cab).

I would say it makes a huge difference. My cab's nose felt absolutely nailed to the road ALL the time with the 968 castor mounts after the geometry was set. The other thing I had done was track rods which cost around £60 a side as minute amounts of slop due to wear in the ball joint on the rack end translates to minutes of slop in the tracking. I also had my camber set to the maximum negative while still being within road spec but my tyres were wearing noticeably on the inside edge because of that after 8,000 miles or so.

With all that done it was nearly as confidence inspiring in the twisties as the Pug is (no that isn't a joke).

At 200kg lighter and less power through FWD = easy driving on the edge you should feel more confident in the corners (i could swear the LCR at 60kg heavier is faster and i am more confident wth it in the corners, but then i relaised when i looked at the speedo it may have felt faster through the same bends but it was not what the speedos reported, and i am not even good enough of a driver top push the 944 hard yet (in this case i had no idea just how much the electronic aids were helping me when i was giving it some in the LCR) - i don't think you mean it goes round them faster though dIid you ?

968 castor mounts sound like the right cheap mod for me too, pehaps the track rods as well - money money money [:)]

Not wishing to put a damper on things but Beaky has 968 mounts and still tracks like an absolute bastard. There is one section of the M25, going into the first tunnel when going clockwise, which is very very scary in the wet.

I have asked Autostrassa to check everything a couple of times to see if anything is loose/worn but they seem to think it is all OK. I might get Machtech to replace the rod ends, do a full set up, and max out on the neg camber at the front. That said, Nick Fearn gave me the number of a suspension specialist, perhaps I'll give him a try. [8|]

I am hoping to find time to fit some 968 mounts this weekend (though slightly optimistic as I am in the middle of a house move!) If I do get round to it I will let you know the results - also running standard suspension (M030) and original 16 inch wheels.
I had a thorough suspension check a while back and was told the castor mounts and tie rods are due for replacement, both of which I have bought from OPC Exeter - nowhere near me but Adrian is the man for all things 944 (cheers for the tip Fen!)
My car is 16 years old with 100k miles. It drives well but I am sure that any rubber bushes etc are way past their best. I have already replaced front and rear arb bushes, which made a slight difference. For the price of these parts I think it is well worth doing, if only for peace of mind.

Ach I knew you would have! [:)]

Thats exactly the report I wanted to hear. In all I've read about 944s over the years, excessive sensitivity to camber wasn't one of them. It's the one aspect thats dissapointed, and if I can remedy it with a couple of bushes......then they shall be changed!

Oh. [:'(]

I could of course pretend I never read that and change them anyway..... can't make things any worse. [&:]

Steve - keep us updated on how you get on please!

No, I didn't mean it was faster, what I mean is that it feels easier to find the edge and like it would be more controllable when you get there. I don't doubt that the ultimate limit is lower than the '44s would be and it isn't as fast in a straight line. I would argue that perhaps it flatters a driver of my ability, or possibly more so my level of comfort on the road so I can actually cover the ground fatser perhaps though; while I'm happy on a race track with a 944 at 45 degrees to the direction of travel I honestly didn't really get it sideways on the road very often and very very rarely deliberately. With the Pug I know I can turn into a well sighted A-road corner or roundabout and drive through it flat, safe in the knowledge that at most the car will pick the inside rear wheel up by 6" then possibly understeer a bit which can be corrected by a slight lift. It has to be well sighted though because I wouldn't want to have to back off suddenly from 100% commitment in a car with a reputation for lift-off oversteer and a "comedy" steering lock like the GTI-6 has.

John, I suspect you have some other problem if your car doesn't track true with 968 castor mounts and proper geometry. Bushes or tie-rods?

i see what you meant now, the leon has a tendency for lift of oversteer too - as much fun as this can be it isn't always predictable and often requires to be travelling at silly speeds with ESP/TC/EBD off, not my sort of thing and it's never been on the track.

Hoping to get a few trips on track with the S2 this year, along with mik and sbf amongst others.

I'm with mik on the castors, going to do the upgrade anyway and bushes too.

Cheers

Mik i know its a different car but my turbo does not demonstrate the exesive type of sensitivity to cambers that yours does. Glad to hear the geometry has helped but i wonder if the tyre choice you have on the front might have something to do with it? The reason i an changing the castor mounts is becasue the origional rubber is starting to bulge a bit so i thought i would take the opertunity to get the 968 ones rather than standard. Also it might compliment the 968 M030 ARB kit.

p.s. Looking at first Sat in April provisionally. For the first FIRST official meeting (cause without a turbo other meetings dont count [8D]) of the WoSPOC

hey Stephen [:)]

Yeah I know. Maybe my mounts are a bit ker-nakered (?)

Peter assured me there is nowt wrong at the front ..... but if I can improve it I will (and I can't see how changing them will do any harm).

OK OK - 1st Sat in April (provisionally) it is then for the 1st meet of TNWoSPOCS (TN=The New) [;)]
