968 caster (castor?) mounts ~ worth it if not upgrading wheels?

I just got my new castor mounts delivered.

They are in a bag by a manufacturing outfit called Almax. Cost $50 USD, each.

They look pretty much the same as your pic but the inner steel has a black oxide type coating. Also, can't tell from your pics but my rubber surround is not solid rubber all the way around like your's looks like. There are gaps with an inverted U bump in the rubber at the 6 and 12 O'clock positions. I wonder if we have the same blocks?

I'm not exactly sure where these mounts fit in with the rear suspension, so I have a question:-

If my entire rear axle is being removed, is it just as easy to re-assemble with new bushes, or will it take any time? If it does take any time, how long do you recon?(the car will be on a lift).

Might be better off putting them on the front!!!!!!

ROFLMAO [:D][:D]

The front mounts are not that tricky to remove, IIRC the centre steel bit pushes out (with a hammer) and then they come apart though I think my originals were rusted to the steel liner in the A arms. New standard ones should offer an improvemnet over 14YO + ones. I cant remember if you can get enough movement to remove them without upsetting the geometry settings.

Hey :)

My shiny new Castor Mounts just arrived, can't wait to get them fitted hope the weather ain't to bad on the weekend :D

Maybe we could have a sticky with a recommended list of replacement/upgrade parts for the 944 ?

Cheers

Great idea Dave.
Paul/John can this be done? Would save heaps of time for new owners & those of us that can only perform upgrades when the overtime/bonus allows.

I've fitted 968 mounts even though my car has never suffered tramlining either on it's previous 16" rims and it's current 17" rims. I did it on the basis that the 968 mounts look right whereas the original mounts look wrong and at 30-odd quid each you might as well fit them. I have noticed a difference in initial turn in - it's much sharper and generally feels tighter so I would recommend to anyone regardless of wheel size or tramlining issues.

It took less than an hour to fit as well so it's a cheap and quick upgrade.

My OPC (Nottingham) seems to give me a greater than 10% (sometimes effectively equal to VAT) discount without me asking so i've never invoked the PCGB 10 % discount. Once I asked them if I can get a further 10% PCGB discount over and above the usual discount but they looked at me as if I was a cheeky little twerp so I felt I shouldn't push the issue any further!!

Woohoo !!!

Got my new mounts fitted on the weekend and agree that these are a worthwhile upgrade for EVERYONE !

As said by others car feels much more solid and turn-in has greatly improved, tramlining has been reduced but feels slightly worse over REALLY bad surfaces.

I know my O/S Control Arm is shot so that maybe making the bad tramlining over rough surfaces ? Anyway got a used N/S and O/S 968 Arm on the way so hopefully sort that problem out too :)

Cheers

Eye opening thread. 968 castor mounts have just been added to my list of things to do the car, befor the next trackday!

Hi Steve,

Not sure if they will fit the early 944 with steel control arms ? Anyone know ?

Cheers

Dave K.

Good point but looking at the photos at the begining of this thread, the late model 944 mounts look identical to the ones on my car. Obviously I will check this rather important detail befor I go ahead and replace them!

I'm 90% sure they fit early cars. In fact if you can scare up a pair of '86 alloy arms from a pre-ABS car they fit too.
