992 New Model Ownership Woes

Hi Lee

So, by way of update. Wireless Air Play has been almost seamless since upgrading to iOS 13.6, but it did have a minor wobble yesterday. The Porsche technician at Sheffield has offered a suggestion which forces independent Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections which should improve connectivity. Apparently what can happen is that the Bluetooth acts as a control channel and is looking for the strongest signal between the 2.5Ghz and 5GHz internal Wi-Fi networks. This act of searching could explain random drop outs. I'll try it and let the forum know.

Random alarm has been traced to the interior ultrasonic sensor, which for me only triggers within the first 1-2 mins after locking. Porsche are looking to see if another system after locking could be generating a voltage/current spike which upsets the sensor and sets of the alarm. Again, I will report if I learn anything more.

Am I correct in saying, only the latest models have the wireless car play. On models like mine, the early 992 only have Apple CarPlay through USB. Also I don’t have an option to select 5GHZ wifi channel.

Rattles. Have a 992.4 on loan from the dealer and can hear a rattle from the central air vents at approximately 66 to 70ish also the driver door speaker is very noisy .

Wanted to add my update on false alarm triggers - they have been sorted. My OPC couldn’t find any fault, but they changed the ultrasonic interior sensors anyway. No issues since. If you have the same issue, alarm going off after a few minutes of locking, see if a simple replacement strategy works for you. All done under warranty.

meanwhile my biggest woe is interior condensation (i have a 992 cab). I don’t mean mist inside; i mean proper sheet of water in the inside screens. Not even using the car and two sessions at the OPC and “no leak found “. This makes the car genuinely unusable.

anyone else with this issue? or any fix suggestions?

Rear drain channels/pipes cleaned by OPC; no fix. Will be going back to OPC again :-(

Also on Car Play question- my 992 is a Nov2019 car. Software upgrade as part of warranty/recall added wifi Car Play for me. Actually works well.

Well after six months of ownership of 992 number two (mostly gathering dust on the driveway), the first fault has appeared today;

"Spoiler fault. Adapted driving permitted"

When you take the car over 70'ish it switches to a warning "Spoiler failure. Reduce speed";

Will keep you updated.

Hopefully nothing serious, and wondering if it's cold weather related and something has ceased up inside.

The above fault has re-occurred on three separate days including on the 4 mile journey to the dealer (with outside temperature varying from 0°c to 10°c over that period).

The outcome from the dealer was (as Schuey suggests) being blamed on the weather;

"I have investigated the spoiler warning fault. fault code Rear spoiler, drive 1 - blockages while extending stored in the fault memory. i have checked the spoiler mechanism and there are no obstructions. This fault code could be brought on if there was frozen water around the mechanism when it tried to operate. i have recalibrated the spoiler and tested the function. it is now working ok.".

When the I collected the car the Service Administrator said "We've had a similar issue this week with three Panamera's where its been so cold!"?????? I live in Sussex, good luck to the 992 owners in the north!

Oh well.

Thanks for the update LRR_uk, I do wonder if there's anything that can be done to lubricate certain areas to protect parts from freezing and seizing up. 🤔

Other than move to California? ;) Seems a good solution to solve a few niggles!

Reminds me of Tesla's "frozen door handles" issue when the West coast had a snap cold spell ...

A friend of mine has a McLaren 650s that had spoiler / air brake issues - had become misaligned under torque and road bumps, so could also be a factor maybe.

Just to chip in here.

I've had my 992 C2S Cab since June 2019.

Apart from the rear offside light cluster filling with moisture after a month or two its been pretty much flawless.

Light cluster was replaced under warranty and all is fine now.

Had one message from the tracking people telling me my car moved. This was due to snow.

That's pretty much it. The car is being traded in when my new Turbo S coupe arrives in who knows when. Hopefully at some point in March but I won't be holding my breath.

Took a test drive in a 992C2 yesterday as was the only one available at OPC. Am contemplating ordering a C2S to replace 4 year old 991C2 bought new (and fingers crossed reliable except for one coolant fault addressed under warrantee). Reading through all above posts has left me wondering how wise such a swap would be given the apparent high level of faults with the 992. Was also quoted 9 months to 1 year for delivery. Main surprise however was an apparent reduction is 'perceived' quality over the 991. Starts with external door handles, then cheap internal door handles, 'knurled' switches which feel uncomfortable, seats which we were told are "20mm lower" but in fact feel as if 20mm of padding has been removed and leather which feels and looks thinner. Felt more like a Cayman inside than a 911. Am I being unduly harsh?

Hi Tony,

With the exception of the spoiler fault reported in January above, my second 992 C2S which has just celebrated its first birthday has been brilliant. It appears to me they had a number of teeth problems with the first cars, but have nailed it now.

Hope that helps,

Lee.

It’s natural for people to talk about their woes on this forum as they will be seeking advice and sympathy from colleagues. Far fewer take the time to tell us when everything is working well and they’re happy.

it would be unfortunate if you allowed this to cloud your judgement Chances are you will buy a new 992 C2S and be delighted with it. 👍 That is one of the best models for driving IMHO.

There always tend to be teething troubles when a new model first launches and I’ve voiced criticism myself over mine too, but a lot of this centres around unfamiliar systems that take time to get used to.

One of my favourite models was my old 997, changed later for a 991, but neither is a patch on my 992! [:)]

Tony,

I went from a 991.2C2 to my 992C2S and felt it was a great improvement in the interior, albeit with some provisos.

The seat latches/handles are a massive step down, but the seats little different. The knurled switches (to me) are a great improvement, but I don't like glossy black plastic surfaces/switches. I find the PCM good where it works (Porsche Connect is a problem with inconsistent synchronization/updates), and it is a far nicer cabin than the 991. I would rather the size had not increased, but the quid pro quo is better roadholding/handling and turn-in.

I am concerned about general quality getting worse, (and see that as a long term company trend), but have had relatively minor problems, whereas the 991.2 blew oil pipes/turbos, so I have some way to go before it gets that bad!

In summary it is a much nicer/faster car, but is disappointing in some minor areas. Mine is an early one, so I am forgiving, knowing that!

I did drive a C4S before my C2S and that did seem more remote in feel and handling. I suspect that a manual C2 would be the sweet spot of the range, if only Porsche made one.

I view the 992 as an evolution more towards a GT car (grand tourer that is), and I look forward to being able to use it on more long trips soon.

I would recommend the 992 but intend extending my warranty for as long as I own it!

Tim

Thank you Clive and Tim for your replies. Managed to get a C2S test drive at another OPC which felt the step up from the 991.2 which we are looking for. So have joined the queue for one with original OPC we have always dealt with. Specified a few options to help with actual (or maybe just perceived!) quality. These included sports seats plus and aluminium interior package. Decided against sport tex headlining etc. although we have it in alcantara at present. Have 24 options in total so really looking forward to its arrival. Of course that is sometime into next year. Patience.
