Dear Castorman,

Thank you for your write up, I purchased one last week nd have been trying to fit it. I have been led to believe that the small black wire with the gold end is a bypass for the amplified aerial(drivers door pillar) the wire with the blue ends is to bypass the diversity control box in the passenger footwell. Obviously you have not used either. Can you tell Me what connector you have connected to the white connector of the FM/DAB splitter(silver box left side of shelf) top photo. Are you getting the full range of DAB FM/AM radio, I’m not getting my Radio DAB or otherwise, but then I have fitted both the bypass’.

Just one observation about your write up the PCCM plus should have been placed into the Black plastic frame before assembly of the side plates and shelf.

Many thanks in advance.

Sean

what is a diversity control box ?

Hi Sean, I’m afraid I may not be much help here. My car is a late Turbo S and my aerial has an ivory coloured connector which went straight onto the end of the box you refer to. So it didn’t require much thought on my side. I‘m not technical by background so it was trial and error. I’m not sure whether I have a diversity controller and will definitely have a look see. I think the challenge is that the package is supplied with a full range of connectors to make it compatible with many different model years, and so most of us who are following a DIY approach are having to figure out what connectors are needed without the benefit of written instructions.

im afraid I’ve been busy so can’t confirm whether DAB is working as it’s not been a priority. FM is definitely working well and so I’ve not really explored further. It has flagged DAB as working but the only channels I have put into memory are on FM.

thx for the comment on assembling the tray. I have managed to fit my unit without having disassembled the cup holder and the ventilation grilles, but if you have done this and found that effectively the brackets for the shelf also act as the fixing to the internal frame that is probably a better solution. I was able to extract the old unit without disassembling the cup holder etc and likewise have been able to insert the new unit, although there is not a suitably engineered way of locking it in as there are no fasteners, so your way is probably correct. Apologies if I have sent anyone down the wrong path. sorry not to be more help. Please keep posting comments as you work your way through, as I’m sure it will help anyone else who is going it alone.

Hi everyone, got mine fitted and happy to help anyone having issues or questions regarding.

I have found an issue/software bug affecting us UK customers who bought the navigation for our new PCCM+'s

Assuming you have a car with the OBC and navigation enabled you will get navigation instructions direct to your instrument cluster just like the PCM 2.0 did so you don't have to look down all the time to check your navigation.

What I noticed is the instructions are not correct for us in the UK using miles instead of kilometres, this issue will also affect the USA when they get round to releasing this there I guess with SIRIUS support and any other country still using miles.

Essentially if you switch your units between kilometres and miles on the PCCM+ navigation your display on the instrument cluster will change the unit on the navigation directions to have the suffix mls or km as you would expect. However, the value is always the value for kilometres.

Example: your PCCM+ says your next turn off is in 18 miles, but your instrument cluster will say your next turn off is in 30mls at the same time. 18miles is around 30km and if you change the units on your PCCM+ to km at the same time the PCCM will display your next turn off is in 30km and your cluster will update from 30 mls to 30 km.

Picture below shows the problem:

Here's a video I made demonstrating the issue:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNMY10sKXO0

If you also have this issue would you mind also messaging Porsche customer services as I have done to perhaps provoke them to offer a software fix, the radio already has the option to update by USB in the options menus so wouldn't be too hard if they even just offered a update file to download and some instructions.

Hopefully they will fix this quickly as I daily this car and updating from my PCM 2.0 navigation that had had it's last update in 2016 was a big thing for me and I am a little disappointed that such a fundamental issue is present, I know we all love Porsche but they charge £1350 for the radio another £115 for the navigation and lets face it a similar spec pioneer or alpine would be half that if not less, the major selling points, at least for me is first it's Porsche's own equipment for us who like thing looking like they belong from the factory like me and second the integration with the cars systems i.e. the instrument cluster.

Also hoping they don't resort to the same fix as the GPS rollover on the PCM 2.1's where the update just made the date disappear rather than correct it, I hope this feature is fixed rather than just removed.

Just to note to test this setting on the radio when you will need to move the car slightly for the cluster to update as well, just pull forward a meter or so and it will update to km or mls as set.

Also interesting, you can access a layer on the radio to view the underlying android system on it, heres a video I made on how to access it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQO_smQNB6Q

Mine is still in Porsche Edinburgh getting fitted. It was completed last week, but Porsche have identified a problem and are releasing a software fix next week in the UK. It's sat-nav related, so maybe the issue you're seeing.

I've told them to keep mine in until they have the fix as i'm currently enjoying the courtesy Cayenne they gave me, so another week is ok with me!

Thanks for that response, I'll get on the phone to Porsche Centre Reading and see what they can do regarding the update.

*update* coincidentally upon going out today I noticed something new, now my car menu's limit their use with a warning if you try to do to much while the car is in motion which it definitely did not do yesterday, it seems like the PCM's supplied with the latest Porsche's updates are made automatically via a phone connected by bluetooth, or at least thats what I assume since I don't see how else this new feature has appeared and I was getting my partner to change between miles and kilometre while I was driving quite a lot yesterday to test the issue previously mentioned so would have noticed it for sure. Bodes well for a fix for the miles/kilometres issue since it seems they are actively updating the system, perhaps they are just not yet aware of the issue.

So far in regard to checking this issue with Porsche Centre Reading: Service bookings told me to ask reception to put me through to a service specialist which weren't available so will call back later, later get a call from the lady I was put through to at the beginning for service bookings so was then put back to reception to again be told I would get a call back later from a specialist so fingers crossed this time I'll get a call from the right person. :ROFLMAO:

Presumably having the new upgrade fitted sorts out the wrong date and time issue a few of us are experiencing now our cars are older. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? Really asking to find out if the date/time issue is indeed from the CDR2 unit. Thanks.

Are you referring to the PCM2? CDR's 23 and 24 don't have GPS and don't display the date. The PCM 2 does however and the time and date it gets from the GPS is synced with the instrument cluster too.

These units suffer from GPS rollover, essentially GPS's of this vintage have the issue of they only have a 10 bit register for which week they are in based on the reference start date in 1999 this means 1024 weeks after this date the reference for the week which was either April or may 2019 depending on the GPS, the 10 bit register rolls over from 1111111111 to 0000000000 and the GPS thinks it's 1999 again and displays as such. We had the same issue in 1999 with the first GPS's with a 10 bit register originating in 1980's but less products had GPS's from then so was less of an issue. a lot of products are saved because you can just update software to fix this which alot of companies did. In fact I worked at a company last year that makes seismometers for scientific study as an engineer and we had exactly this issue which we just fixed with a software update and GPS's which could not be updated we supplied a modern replacement GPS. Porsche however elected not to do this in either capacity, they I'm guessing new the PCCM plus was in the pipeline, why offer an update for a very old and limited system when we can sell a complete new radio. PCM 2.1's from the 997 have the same issue but Porsche release and update that just blanks the date from being seen, bit more lazy that fixing it.

Long explanation I'm sorry but yes the new radio does not suffer this problem and I believe new GPS's for the most part now are fitted with 12 bit registers so they are safe for 80 years or so from the new start date and again a software update would fix all if it came to it.

Official word on the navigation bug from Porsche customer services, Porsche are aware of the issue and will be providing an update. I assume they will do the same as they did on the newer cars, offering this to those who enquire about the issue, as the reality is unless you have a car without the OBC or the functions enabled you will never experience this issue and even if you do, you may never notice.

Thanks BatKing996C4S, great explanation, but my 996 shows the correct date initially when I put the ignition on and can do for a few minutes whilst out driving then changes to a 00 year date consistent to when it first started changing. Hopefully a possible software update will sort it, not that I'm really bothered.

No problem. thats the issue though, the date change you will find happens when the GPS syncs, if you don't use the navigation since the last update was in 2016 you can simply pull the navigation insert out the back of radio, just slides in and out and when out the setting menu will allow you to manually set the time and date, of course it just says navigation unavailable if you try to use any of the nav related buttons. Unfortunately when plugged in it only allows you to update the date by GPS which will then update to the wrong date. From what I understand that correct date is stored however if the battery is disconnected for a few minutes the radio's internal memory resets and it will then no longer show the correct date, that was my experience when I still had a PCM 2.0,. I'm afraid since Porsche released the PCCM+ for 996/986 and officially dropped map support in 2016 I don't believe there will be a further update like the PCM 2.1 which they just made the date disappear, its a shame they in such cases where they don't have any interest in support don't release the source code, plenty of talented software engineers who could modify it to an update to show the correct date in an afternoon. I tried my hand as and electrical engineer on a hardware level and was able to source the data lines between the GPS board and rest of the navigation circuit and even got an Arduino to tell it the correct date with a random location, however being a Garmin propriety GPS of the time I wasn't quite invested enough to take the time to programme the arduino to read the code from a modern GPS and transmit it in the Garmin format. Bit overboard but I really wanted the date to show correctly, naturally after putting in that effort when I heard the PCCM+ was coming out I was quick to list my PCM on ebay to fund the new system.

I recommend the new system though, it's essentially the PCM you get in a new 911 and even costs a quarter of the cost of specing a PCM in a new 911 and at least for me I was able to make over half the money for the new system by listing my old PCM 2.0, plus if you have a later car as your 2004 you get all the benifits of it talking to your instrument cluster.

Loving my new Pccm+ - Stunning bit of kit.

I want to sell my old PCM 2 but don’t have any code to go with it. Do you still need code if putting into a different 996. If so is that something a Porsche Centre can do for the buyer if I don’t have the code. I would think it would need to be coded to a new chassis number anyway. Help needed !! Thanks in advance.

I know people who have tried fitting a used PCM2, but with limited success by coding. It seems like you need to get the unit decoded to remove the protection. Someone like DND Services or Maple Audio may be able to help with that. Personally, I see little benefit of putting a 20+ year old navigation system in a car, just because it was original fitment. Your experience with PCCM+ has highlighted how out of date the old system was.

I had mine finally fitted this week. So happy with it. It’s expensive but for me I’d say it brings an 18 year old car so up to date internally that a non-Porsche person would struggle to date a well detailed example.

Thanks Richard. Yep the new system with apple car play etc certainly brings it up to date. I have listed the old one as it seems a shame to just bin it. I have checked with the workshop manager at Porsche Tonbridge who kindly got back to me to say:

“Glad you’re pleased with it!

If someone buys your unit they will need to have it coded by a Porsche Centre. The code they need will be like the one below, but for their own vehicle. The one below is for your vehicle as an example, however this won’t work for someone who buys your PCM they need their vehicle and the PCM.”

So added that to my listing. If it does not work out I can just refund buyer & they can chuck it.

Hope that makes sense. In short, they need to take the PCM and the car to be coded together.

Does anyone know how up to date the maps are with this new unit? Given that Porsche charge a hansom sum for new updates, it would be nice to know how current this release actually is.

All these posts are getting my juices flowing for this upgrade...

For what it’s worth, I was ready to spring for the maps and the installer told me not to bother, Porsche Nav is bad and you’re better off with CarPlay or Android auto
