Hello all,

Has anybody of you GenII owners heard when the sports exhaust will be available? I vaguely remember Feb being mentioned but wondered if there is a *concrete* date now and what the likely wait/cost for one is going to be?

Cheers,
Simon

I seem to remember May being talked about on other threads? Probably too much and a long wait![:(]

That's some time away [:(] This will please my better half though as she'd prefer a trip to Dubai instead! cheers!

Well don't take that as gospel! I'm sure others around here have some ideas - Derek Sharp for one - Derek? I'd like it on mine[:D] How are you getting on with PDK? Tried launch much?[:)]

I see the configurator now has the PSE option (may have been there for a while, I haven't been there recently!) £1200 ish, so it could be sooner than May?

Sadly the date is still May. However, after the disappointment with it on my Cayman S, I'll try before I buy.

Derek, when you say you'll try before you buy do you mean that you'll drive one with it fitted or have them fit it to yours, on spec, and take it off if you don't like the sound? I loved it on the gen 1 - hope they can replicate that![:)]

Thanks Derek. Maybe some bright spark will be able to do a with and without vid and stick it on You Tube or some such so we can all hear!

In December, the guys at the Silverstone Experience Centre told me the reason for the delay was that the original 997.2 PSE failed type approvals first time round, so they had to do a redesign... Latest I hear from my OPC is May. They have added it to my order by hand, and will post fit for free.. Although, God knows when I am going to get my car, now that the factory has been shut for most of January, I guess my build slot has been pushed out... Being 'Porscheless' is very boring! [:(]

Will make you appreciate it all the more......![;)] Sorry to hear of the delay, Robert. I wonder if they will retrofit PSE for free and at the "option" price on the configurator? Has anybody been made any promises in that respect?

Here's what it will look like, the word 'foreskin' has been mentioned on other forums [:D]

Porsche Press site: "Stuttgart . The engineers of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new sports exhaust system for the latest generation of the 911, available as an option on new models as of February 2009. This special exhaust gives the customer the opportunity to adjust the 911 to his individual, personal preferences also in the car’s particular sound: At the touch of a button the exhaust system switches over to a sporting and emotional sound generated in particular whenever the driver prefers a truly dynamic style of motoring. The new sports exhaust system is made of modified stainless-steel main silencers and stands out clearly through its two dual tailpipes in unique design. The heart of the system is the exhaust flap on each main silencer activated by the engine’s electronic control system and switching over to a more sporting sound as soon as the driver activates the sound mode. The system itself is activated by a separate button in the centre console varying the sound of the exhaust as a function of engine load, road speed and engine speed. The Euro base price of the sports exhaust system is 1,610 Euro excluding taxes. In the US the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is 2,500 US$. Starting in April 2009, Porsche will also be offering a Tequipment version for retrofitting"

ORIGINAL: tscaptain Oo er missus![:)] But what does it sound like, I wonder? No audio file on the press website, I bet.
You can NEVER tell what an exhaust sounds like from a sound clip. You always have to hear it in person. If the new PSE is as good as the old one though you will be onto a winner! The only concern I would have (aside from the dodgy aesthetics) would be whether you can hack the exhaust to always open by disconnecting the vacuum like in the 997.1 version. This made the whole car for me in my old 997.1 Carrera S Cab.

So that's exactly what it will look like on my Black Targa 4S when it comes in at my OPC then? I ordered mine when I speced the car from new, but of course it was not available until this year. Just have to wait now. Should be a fun upgraded though. Nige.

Yes agreed but at least it would be a little taster while we wait! (Any sound engineers out there who think otherwise?[;)]) I was quite happy to have it switchable on the Gen1 rather than always on so only the sound/aesthetics are of concern rather than hackability! And when they say "touch of a button" do they mean through the Sport/Sport+ buttons or a completely separate one for the PSE, I wonder.

Alan, I am sure you have noticed in your gen 2 user manual a reference to the switch for the PSE, I posted it some time back. From that it looks like the control will be independent of the Sport or Sport Plus controls, IE a separate switch just for the PSE. However I don't know if the Sport Chrono is a pre req, I have it on my car, and ISTR the OPC told me I needed it for when the PSE became available. Nige.

Thanks Nige, I must have missed that one. I have Sport Chrono plus also. I obviously haven't read the manual closely enough either! If that is the case then, presumably, no need to worry about disconnecting things in the engine bay.[;)] Also I assume that you will get it fitted gratis as you ordered it with the car?

Porsche engineers have developed a new sports exhaust system for the latest generation of the 911(997), available as an option on new models as of February 2009 in Europe and from April in the U.S. With just a click of a button the system would switch over to a sporting and emotional sound generated in particular whenever the driver prefers a truly dynamic style of motoring. The system itself is activated by a separate button in the center console varying the sound of the exhaust as a function of engine load, road speed and engine speed. In Europe the base price is 1,610 Euro including taxes. In the U.S. suggested retail price is $2,500. Current 911 owners can have the system retrofitted to their existing models.
