997 Gen 2 Sports Exhaust

ORIGINAL: okellyt You need to bring the beast to a 997 event now so we can admire the exhaust int he flesh (as well as hear it)
Yes indeed! How about this one?[;)] [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=430868&mpage=1&key]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=430868&mpage=1&key[/link]= Should be nicely run in by then![8D]

Hi everyone, thanks for the comments on my car - photos to follow soon, but I can confirm that I have the Sports Chrono Plus and that there is still a separate switch for the PSE. I'll check on the brown plug for the 'always on' mod, although the switch does seem to make that requirement almost redundant - regardless of the 'Sports' or 'Sports Plus' selection the PSE seems to remain on as long as the switch is selected on (usually the first thing I do after starting the car!) I hope to attend both the 997 register day out on 26 April and also the novice track day in Sep, so hopefully I'll see some of you there. In the meantime I'll post some photos (once the weather clears up!) and I'll get back to you about the brown plug. All the best, John

No surprises then that the OPC's don't know what they are talking about. Both told me that if I had Sport Chrono that the PSE would be selected via the Sport or Sport+ button and not a separate switch (which was my understanding). See you in Sept![8D]

I look forward to seeing the new motor John [8D].. and like many others.. hearing it [:D] garyw

ORIGINAL: slapshot The "brown plug" wiring mod simply makes the exhaust loud all the time (which can be annoying) and bypasses the console switch for the PSE.
And that is why one mans blood is another mans poison [;)]- some may interpret 'annoying' to mean totally the opposite [:)] garyw

Hi everyone, As requested by some, here are some photos of my new 997 - you can clearly see the separate switch for the PSE on the console. A quick look 'under the hood' doesn't show anything as obvious as The Brown Plug, although there are some plugs in the same area which will need to be investigated! All the best, John

Yes John, nice photos and especially like the coloured crests with the black wheels.[8D] Still no news on retrofit of PSE.[:(]

Anybody got a date yet for a retrofit? I chased mine yesterday and was told there is still no date on the system for availability. [:(] John - have you had any success with the plugs to get the alway on mod? Having had a Gen1 with PSE I will certainly be disconnecting every plug going in the area when I get mine to get Gen2 always on!

The consensus seems to be that the Gen 2 PSE comes with the switch on the dash so it can be always "on" without disconnecting anything at the back end! (See earlier posts and pictures). No dates for retrofit that I've heard.

Gen1 PSE came with a seperate switch on the dash if you didnt have Chrono yet it still disenagaged between 30-50mph even when turned on at the switch. I really dont expect Gen2 to be any different unless the whole PSE experience is much quieter overall meaning there is no need to dampen down the noise mid-range to meet the EU noise regs. I expect Gen2 to be exactly the same - the very fact it is switchable means there must be variable baffles within the exhaust to turn it on and off at the switch and therefore I fully expect the noise to semi-mute again in the mid range for same reasons as it did before. As posted earlier there are several suspicious looking connectors on a Gen2 car in simliar areas to the Gen1 brown plug, but they all seem black this time. Still no point in me fiddling with them until I have PSE and indeed maybe a new connector will appear during the retrofit process... Here is a quote from rennteam from a sweedish poster on the PSE thread there :
Visited my local Porsche-dealer today and they had a Targa4S in the showroom with PSE so I took some pictures with my mobilephone. Unfortunately I didn't hear the exhaust-sound, but according to the sales manager the sound is more high-pitched than on 997.1 PSE but lack some of the growl. He also mentionted that the always-on "hack" by removing the electrical cable in the engine compartment is still possible to do on the 997.2 PSE

. So this might be good news for all 997.2 owners. I think it lookw way better in real life than on the pictures, but still can't decide if I like it or not. It for sure differentiate from the standard exhaust and they look kind of unique. What I don't like is the inner exhaust. It's like three layers with different shapes and form and it looks very busy...
John - help us out here! You appear to be the only person with a Gen2 PSE on this forum so far. We need to hear the results of your plug investigations! [:D] Cant believe there is no word on dates for retrofits when factory PSE cars have been being delivered for almost 2 weeks now - clearly the parts exist! I am really itching for PSE now, I am finding the whole Gen2 experience somewhat more muted and less satisfying overall than my Gen1 car was and I am hoping PSE will restore most of the fun. Then again maybe its PDK at the root of my problems and not the lack of a decent soundtrack, but until I have PSE once again I cant point the finger with a degree of certainty.

The old "horses for courses", I guess. I find the Gen 2 better in all respects and having had it on the track a couple of times the Sport+ and PDK are superb. In the 5k to 7k+ rev range I think it sounds ok, if not as good as the Gen 1 PSE. Personally I wouldn't want the PSE on loud mode 100% of the time, especially on longer journeys. Out of interest (as I never disconnected anything brown on my Gen 1) with Sport chrono to have the PSE on loud all the time I just selected Sport and then "deselected" the firmer ride. It didn't disengage at any speed so I guess it was just cars without sport chrono and with PSE that did that?

No, on all Gen1 cars the PSE backed off mid range - not completly 'off' but not as 'on' as it was at lower or higher speeds. The PSE was in effect only operating at about 50% full noise capability when at around 30-50mph. With the plug disconnected the effect was more dramatic overall - I ran mine for 2 weeks with the plug connected and then tried it disconnected - after that there was no turning back for me! Maybe I'm just a hooligan at heart... [:)] If you never tried the brown plug disconnect trick then Im sure you would have thought it was on all the time when switched on, but believe me it was capable of much more noise. I didnt mean to say the Gen2 car was not as good - there is no doubt in my mind that Gen2 is indeed a better car in all respects, faster, more comfortable, more gadgets, more capable handling but somehow I still (3 weeks into ownership) find myself lacking the overall grin factor and statisfaction that my old car gave me everytime I drove it. I dont walk up to the new car with the same sense of anticipation that I did for the old one and when I'm driving it I dont get the same buzz. I cant be sure if its the muted sound track or PDK that I havnt quite taken to as much as I expected (having previously owned 2 M3 SMG's and 100% loved them - I came into PDK ownership already as a fan of the technology requiring no real persuading) that is at the root of my disapointment, but for sure some of the daily grins are gone now for me.

I guess 30 years + of listening to jet engines knackered my hearing anyway so I can't tell the difference! Just one launch down a quiet stretch gives me enough "grin" for one day![;)] Just been up to the SE and back in 24hrs (500 mile round trip) and it feels like I've just been down to the shops and back it was that effortless and comfortable. I just mix up the modes depending on the type of road and how "involved" I feel like getting. Presumably after 3 weeks you're not giving it the full treatment yet?[8D]

Alternatively buy a Miltek exhaust which is loud or a Cargraphic which is louder still up to earbursting depending which level of Cargraphic exhaust you go for.

Hi everyone, just to confirm that there is a plug on the 997.2 in the same position as the 'brown plug' on the 997.1, and I can confirm that removing the plug sets the PSE to the loud mode, so that should keep everybody happy! Although it's been reported that the 997.2 exhaust is a higher note than the previous car, I personally think that there is a lot more bass in the note at idle. I will be at the Castle Coombe Action Day on Sat 25th April and also the Midland Breakfast Meet and Drive on the 26th April so will be happy to give demonstrations then (subject to running-in rev limit, of course!!) All the best, John

I'm sure that news will have brought a smile to many people faces John....[:D] The brown plug lives on [:)] garyw

It is amazing that the brown plug modification is probably responsible for most 997.2 owners opting to have the PSE fitted... All I need now is to hear it and it's a done deal! Mark edit: I've tried to get rid of my guest of the club title and sent multiples emails as requested to the forum owner... please can I get my membership recognised and access to all area.... ;-( Is anyone out there??? edit2: Thanks for the link Gary, worked a treat!
