Advice on buying a 944 ?

Why does it need to be a turbo? The standard Cayman S will be quite a bit faster than a standard 911 round a circuit, and it has quite a bit more power than a 944 turbo. Or does it have to be able to achieve big power through mods for it to be viable for you?

The S produces 295bhp and 250ft.lb. I don't know how much it weighs but I bet it's heavier. That's a little more power and slightly less torque than a 250 Turbo. It costs about £300 to get similar power and much more torque from the 944.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I'm not saying it would have to be modifiable to interest me but it would have to have 350bhp+. To get that from an n/a Porsche producing 295 from the factory would be ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Nah, I think it might be a bit more than 36 £s.

I would agree with the general comments on the Cayman though. It is the first recent Porsche that I've thought perhaps I might have once Peter is old enouch that we don't have to take him with us. That is assuming there are any still running to be available second hand.

Caymen is approx 1300Kg - whats the weight for a 944?

It says on this slip from a Public Weighbridge that, on 29/11/04, Beaky (when full of fuel) weighed 1420 kg.
 
Just looked in Evo at the comparison with a 993, and they quote 1340 for a Caymen - what is the quoted weight for a Boxster?
 
1385 empty
1460 with fluids

Strike that - those are the tiptronic weights!

the real ones are :
1345 and
1420 with fluids




 
OK, so not a huge difference in weight and the 944 may be the flabbier.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Regardless the prospect of 295bhp in a Cayman doesn't exactly excite me but 400+ with a turbo would be a different story.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Or a reversed 911 engine a'la Ruf(not sure how much this would be, more than £300..)or is there a turbo addiction to feed here?
 
I have nothing against n/a cars but traditionally the fastest Porsches tend to be turbo versions, by a country mile.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I haven't kept up with Ruf for years but do they do something around the 400bhp mark based on a non-turbo 911 (I assume you mean 996 or 997) engine?[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
The Ruf 3600 (Boxster) I had a play in a couple of years back had 345BHP (996 3.6 engine with powerkit).
Great fun - What the Boxster should be...

They are now doing 987 shaped ones with the 3.8 engine. Yeee-haaarr![:D]

They also do a limited edition "Turbo" version just for Fen - the supercharged 3.8 litre engine RUF RK Spyder gives 420 bhp [:)]

B.T.W I'm hoping for circa 450bhp and 1300kg by the time mine is rebuilt. £8k to buy the car and £8k mods [:eek:], but at least I can still fit the kids in the back and take rubbish to the tip.
 
IMHO, the nicest Porsche engine of all (barring the Carrera GT of course) is the 3.6L N/A unit in the last 911 GT3. That has 380 (or 381 maybe) HP. I suppose I'm not a big fan of turbos, and I suspect the Cayman S will be plenty fast enough. Recent 911 turbo models have tended to be less well received than the equivalent non-turbos (e.g. turbo vs 4S, GT2 vs GT3, etc.). N/A power levels have now got to the point where you have plenty of power for public roads (though obviously not the track).

I'm not in a position to comment on any watercooled 911 engine I'm afraid; no interest in them so no experience of them.
