Air Con

I consider air-con worthwhile all year round, unfortunately I don't have it in my daily driven S2 either.

I bought my turbo with non-working aircon on the basis I knew that Coolit could fix it at a reasonable price no matter what was wrong with it. They are also the experts on retro fitting to pretty much any Porsche, frequently using a mix of original equipment and aftermarket parts in order to provide a reasonable cost and long lived installation.

I do have a complete kit of parts for an early dash RHD aircon system, including heater, loom, the lot... this still involves welding in brackets, drilling holes, and yes, probably engine out to install the pipework... and it won't fit is a 924 either dammit.

Steady Scotty, by retrofitting non-original A/C, you might be accused of modifying your original car?![;)]

I think you're right Nick, those daft modifications and engine enhancements don't belong
on real enthusiast's cars.

I don't know could I bring myself to make any "improvements"
to a priceless piece of Stuttgart metal......

Oh wait, I already have [:D]

It is only two bolts and unclip the gas struts and the rear-hatch comes right out! In fact... it is probably easier than my old Audi estate luggage cover...

Yes but the hatch is heavy.

IMHO interior colour is much much more important then if the car has aircon or not. I used to find my non-AC S2 with black leather interior was unbearable on a hot day. However my 968 has a grey dash and light grey leather seats and the bonus of aircon. I find the colour of the interior makes more difference then having AC. Having said that though I put the AC on today for the drive home and whilst it is a pathetically weak system it did make the drive reasonably pleasant rather then a constant sweat box.

Swap your interior from black to linen or grey, much cheaper and more effective then AC if one has the coal bin bondage club all black N shiny job.

After 7 years of cars with A/C it's come as a bit of a shock to not have it working now. Having the roof out and windows down is nice but no substitute imo.

Well i've used my car every day for the past 2 weeks and without A/C it would have been unbearable. Open windows and sunroof's are no substitution - on weather like today you are either blasted with hot humid air and have your scalp fried by the sun - or you sit in traffic with warm air blowing on you and stewing in your own sweat. A/C is a must in these cars in hot weather. Not sure i'd spend £2 - 3k on it though.

hiya scotty, i called a company in yorkshire[i think?], who retro-fit air con systems to 3.2 911s, he said with the work involved, parts etc i would be looking at over £6000, took my breath away only alternative that appears is to buy a turbo with air con fully functional regards jason

I will have to just get used to being cooked alive in the car (that glass rear hatch does not help!)

Blacking out the rear glass might help? [8|][:D]

Lol [;)]
I agree with Neil when he says the solution is to change the interior colour, or IMO better yet rip it all out [:D]. My two cars can be parked together, the 944S with black interior (with fancy fripperies like opening windows) is stifling, yet the white one with nowt in it but some seats remains as cool as the first pint of cider after a long days work... That reminds me, back in a mo'!

Buying a car with non functioning aircon and getting it fixed is another option... the main things to go wrong are the condenser and evaporator... if both are shot I would think £1k would fix it.

don't forget the leaky lines as well - have you ever priced up replacements from OPC? [:(]

yeah, you are right... air-con - terrible stuff... best take it out - think of all the weight you'll save... tell you what... I'll do you a favour and take the parts off your hands, leaky pipes and all...

Hang on? Didn't I just say sell it and buy a car with aircon already fitted? OK... do as I say not as I do! Just bare in mind my cabrio project is about four years old - unfinished, the LPG conversion is 18 months old - unfinished - the 944 into 924 shell is a year old... barely started... And the Turbo I followed my own advice... concour condition and now I'm not allowed to touch it!

I had the roof out and aircon on today....[:D]

It is funny when you press the aircon button, it is like someone has put the handbrake on a couple of clicks...

See, if a few more people did that, the global warming problem would be solved! Damn physisists just don't know what they're on about[;)]

That is interesting. I've used my air-con-less S2 as a daily driver, with a journey of 20-odd miles to and from my current client site, for those same two weeks. One day of which involved 90 minutes sitting in a traffic jam due to road closures (don't ask!) And, yes, it has been hot but not unbearable.

That has been with the roof out and windows open. And, quite often, a dark suit on.

I suspect this furthers' Neil and Peter's interior colour theory. Mine is linen.

Oli.

Definitely agree on interior colour......linen leather is much more reflective than most other colours/fabrics and I find it quite comfortable on the hottest days(but then I'm wearing shorts and a tee shirt not a dark suit) and not sitting in traffic for long periods.

Imagine black with black, sunroof delete, broken air con(normal), and......drivers window is jammed - now that would not be a nice place to be [:(]

Oh I don't know. Saunas still change entry fees ... it could be a useful source of second-income.

Sc0tty,

Yours is white. And I think you have said previously that you keep it in a garage. I can't believe it gets that hot.
