Anyone got any Rust issues on their 964

Front inner wing bracket ...both shot on my car .£50+vat ..odd as the rest of the car is solid..bar the rear brackets and a small rust spot on the left screen area.

This is where the PCGB membership pays off with 10% off all OPC parts .
Got 15% today as I ask nicely and the part guys felt sorry for the rip of price of the brackets and bumper mount.

Three picture of the rear bumper reinforcing bar ( inside the rear bumper )

Picture one is the right side ...looks OK but on closer inspection is splitting as in seen in picture 2 .
Picture 3 is the broken corroded left mount. considering these two mounts are the only item connecting the towing hook ( when used) to the car you could end up with a right mess when it pulls the bumper off the car ...;-(

Exactly the same as my rear bumper bar. Tubes had rusted through and collapsed.

Soon to be removed for ever!!
 
All depends on the state of the screws and bolts you have ..as i had a lot missing and some rusted with no heads on them to speak of , but there are approx:

1) 5 screws/bolts each side ( 3 screws for the bumper to body rubber ) 2x bolts/screws for the bumper to brackets ) all per side.
2) Then the two large bolts ( 10mm alley ) on each mount ..these are the fun ones to get off ..right normally comes off, the Left is the corroded questionable one. These you access from underneath the bumper at each corner..you will need to remove the Exhaust tail to get at the right one. And you might need a 10mm alley key socket attachment to get the leverage.

Then you need to unplug the license plate light wires..right hand side of the light/bumper area

Then the whole bumper should come off ...;-)

I totally agree with you Steve and not only body work for that matter as we both know.

A good finish is all in the preparation, no good having the best spray job if it's hidding a multitude of sins just waiting to burst through in twelve months time.

WARNING!!! Any 964 owners of a nervous disposition should NOT look at the photos below.

Here are my before and after photos of my car's rust issues. I'll do them in order of the least shocking. [:D]

This rust around the mirror base was noticeable when I got the car and had never got any worse according to the PO [8|]. Looks like it had developed under the old flag mirror base before the teardrops were fitted.

After (ignore the paint on the base seal as that was there before and is not new overspray).

Inside the light cluster was very rusty and beginning to spread outwards with lots of rust bubbles appearing on the wing:

Rust was removed, LOTS of paint applied and then liberally coated with waxoyl to prevent this happening again:

Inside the engine bay was the devastating find. My heart sank when I tapped a rusty looking spot and then found I could put my thumb right through it (I think this is called a gusset plate) [&o]

This had to be all cut out and a plate welded in. Again a smear of waxoyl has been put on the surface as this is not normally on show.

Finally there was some ominous looking rust above the sill cover:

This had to be all cut out, metal plates welded in and lots of waxoyl applied behind the sill. Unfortunately I didn't get a pic before the sill cover was put back on but here's a pic of that area now.

While they were at it, I got them to paint a new headlamp ring as that had been gradually disintegrating.

My summary of the work done by the little bodyshop I used is that they have made a firstclass finish on the bits you see (as shown by the re-painted door and wing below) and have been very thorough in fixing the bits you don't and rust proofing them for the future [:)]

Interesting where your rust has come through ..as my car is in the shop to have its smaller 2 areas dealt with. Once I get the car back I will be 100% waxoyl it ( but with hot wax and a high pressure set I have - used it for years on all my cars). Also all the inner wings will be hand painted with the black underseal first before I inject it into the cavities etc and behind the pipe work etc etc .

Has your body shop undersealed or waxed were you had the rust, as I see you put wax on the new areas on the top but its the behind that needs it really as rust starts from the back and comes to the front...and is like an ice berg in concept ..what you see on the top is the pinnacle ;-)
 
Yes they said they have waxoyled behind the affected areas. I don't think they have applied a thicker underseal though (however they did put the usual black underseal on my front tub a few months ago when that got fixed).

I don't think that sill cover had ever been removed before (the one on the other side has because I fitted new rubbers to it last year). When I took it off there must have been a kilo of dirt behind there which I cleaned away. Behind the rusty area there is what looks like a drain pipe that comes down the B pillar which I guess will have contributed to creating the corrosion? I thought the sunroof only drained down the A pillar and out of the back so it suprised me to see a pipe there. All that area was thoroughly cleaned and waxoyl applied behind it.
 
Everyone should look at the sill seals IMHO, when they go hard, as they will. The body flex will ensure they cut into the paintwork, and then into the bodywork......Thus ensuring a lovely exposed section of steel can be readily attacked by the all too keen tinworm, seen it many a time, and its why I replaced my seals a long time ago.

Last trip to the bodyshop we had stack of stuff painted, repaired and replaced,including the metal reinforcer bar(under the rear plastic skin as in above posts) that was totally shot,as its the bit that takes the brunt of a shunt from the rear i replaced it.This weekend just gone found some rust specks on the engine lid (rear boot) and the very leading edge of the bonnet.Really don't want it to get worse so dropping it off at Selbys Notts repairers next week.
It seems to never end,its at times like these i wish we didn't like older cars so much[:(]

Very true, only yesterday I was told by my OPC that the front wing stay/strut ( 964 504 141 00 ) which I had two on order are now discontinued !!! . As I've said above, yours will all be rusted and falling apart as well ...and at £50+vat each they weren't cheap . Plan B now ..try another model ( an RS one ) which is in stock, to see if it can be made to fit ...will keep you posted

So in three years of ownership this is the 2nd part I have found I can't get ...( steering column - lower black panel around the stalk + this wing strut ) and I have ordered hundreds of parts over that time frame, and have been impressed they have what they keep in stock.
 
Good to see you attacking the rust Steve ... looking good.
Gave in in the end and ordered the rear corner bumper brackets from opc .... owch ..... haven't paid for them yet although they said they would knock 15% off ... hope they don't then tell me they are discontinued ... hey Ian !
