Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Is this new or just belated reports of January 2020?

You can check if your vehicle is subject to a recall by inputting your Vehicle Identification Number

I collected my 718 Spyder in November and the owners pack had the regular 718 handbook. Do fellow owner know if there is a specific Spyder handbook or supplement. Thanks.

They should come with a 294 page handbook that covers both the GT4 and Spyder. I have a pdf version but the file is to large to post here unfortunately.

Introducing myself as a "newbie" to this fraternity, I have recently purchased a 981 Spyder, and having a lot of fun at the same time........I would like to ask if anyone can help me, the car I bought didn't have a reversing camera. I have spoken to my local "car electrical technition", an expert in his field having worked on Porsche/Bugatti/Ferrari etc etc, who tells me he can retro fit one without issue, he just needs to see the unit thats required to mate with the standard fitted "sat/nav" head. I also asked Porsche centre Bolton if they can fit the same, just incase of any warranty issues as I have the balance of a 30 month warranty on the car outstanding, to which they replied :-

Unfortunately, this is not possible on your vehicle. Installation of a rear reversing camera is a factory fitted option only which means we are unable to retro fit this to your vehicle.

Has anyone had a similar experience with any of the OPC's, and would I be risking my warranty if I went ahead with an independantly fitted reveresing Camera ?

thanks......

James,

I looked at this for my 991.2 GT3. Same answer from Exeter Centre that it was not a Tequipment option so could not be retrofitted.

A little more digging and my local indy, SCS Porsche Honiton recalls a reversing camera being retrofitted to a 991.2 GT3 by Exeter Centre. The job was apparently very complicated (no factory procedure defined) and finally cost circa £2,000.

Alternatively, I have found a local car electronics firm who offered this

camera

with fitting extra approx. £270.

I am now waiting for the "right" moment to ask the warranty question....

Hope this helps

Ralph

I have often thought of using a bluetooth or wifi based reversing camera on the car which would avoid interfering with the PCM system or borrowing power from the cars loom at some point, possibly causing a wiring issue. Most of the PCM integration kits I have seen involve opening up the PCM module and inserting another board.

thanks Ralph........I guess as far as the OPC's are concerned, as long as they can get as many boxes ticked from PO as they can for the factory to fit, they may well be obstructive for the indys.......my Indy quoted me £480 supplied & fitted......

cheers

I would be interested if you found anything Kaiser....

Jimmy, loads of options online, amazon and the like, just wouldn't know which option would be the best and obviously you would have to make the rear camera look as best as possible. They are cheap enough for it not be an issue to buy one and try it out but as for suitability in terms of appearance on the back of your car and operation via your smart phone, I am not sure how successful an operation it would be.

Does the bluetooth or wifi based reversing camera require power?

I have a 981 Spyder and have the rear camera fitted. TBH, the visibility in the car is good enough for me to feel that I could, in fact, manage quite happily without the camera.

That said, when I was looking to buy the car, I did find one without a rear view camera and the dealer (William Loughran in Preston) did contact OPC Bolton re getting a camera retro-fitted. He got the sae response as you

If you are looking at something like this sort of setup then it is only from the reversing light that power is borrowed. Its not ideal. I honestly don't do a lot of reverse parking when I am out and about in the car, normally have a passenger on board to for tricky spots but it is certainly an option if you really need one that would be up and running in very little time for very little outlay and avoids PCM integration.

I had a local auto electrician installed an Auto Vox reversing camera on my 993.

The camera is small and hides between the number plate and the lip on the bumper.

Wire hidden through the engine bay, cabin and through the roof lining.

I would advise against the wifi versions and suggest hard wired is better.

This is a £250 solution including fitting and works very well.

I even removed the original rear view mirror and replaced it with the hidden screen one. Activates on selecting reverse and works very well.

No warranty issues as you are not adding anything into the electrics etc.

I also installed a similar one on my VW Caravelle but that one also has a forward facing camera on the back of the rear view mirror so that also acts as a dash cam. Very unobtrusive and has be reliable constantly for over two years now.

Power is fed from the reversing light. Select reverse gear and the camera is given power and activates the hidden screen in the rear view mirror.

Bluetooth wifi will require constant power and in my experience has a delay on activation which may be a problem if you are trying to do a quick three point turn.
