Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

I am slightly disappointed in flat6. His post graduate degree level thesis back in the early days of the thread should have caught this. He's going to drop from Dr Spyder to Masters level if he's not careful... [:D] New page, new photo... Livin' the dream:

Well today was my first serious long run i covered 167 miles and have to say the Spyder is a fantastic car so planted on the road and the acceleration is phenomenal . It really builds you confidence in taking corners before i would always brake before to scrub off speed now i can carry the speed through the corners with confidence . It is still all new to me and getting used to the gears is strange ,at times wondering why it will not change up or down and then remember i have to do it myself .. At times the ride can be harsh due to the terrible roads ,wind noise is not at all intrusive even at the limit [;)] Looking forward to having the roof down when i get the deflector fitted . It is early days yet as it is totally different to any other Porsche i have driven or owned and look forward to many more happy miles together ..Now washed .brakes dried off and in its garage till the next time. Brian

Good to hear you have had a serious day out getting to know the new Porsche and in time you may even decide she really is a "keeper" which I know isn't your usual M.O.[:D] Get that missing wind deflector a s a p and then you can really enjoy some serious topless fun every dry trip out no matter what the temperature is[8D] Once you have cracked the stick shift and 3rd peddle the love affair will real kick off:ROFLMAO: Look forward to your next report

Ahem, you'll have to get up early to catch me out Rob [;)] I just spent half an hour with the search facility as I was sure I had posted this. After I was almost about to accept defeat, I found it on page 1, Post #: 19[8D] Doing a bit of catching up... Brian, I agree that the silver fuchs wheels bring nothing to the party. As for side stripes, watch this space [;)]

Brian, your experience matches that of the reviews we've just been looking at. The car is worth every penny for what it returns to the driver. Porsche couldn't make all its cars this way and that's what makes it special. Somehow after 14 years of 986 and 987 Porsche turns the Boxster into something significantly different. Respect is due. People who say it's just a run-out special obviously cannot detect what Brian has after just a couple of drives. The extra bonus is, compared to a Lotus, the Spyder is sheer comfort and luxury but delivers a lotus style sharp driving tool. So, the car with buckets and PDK shifted quite quickly and we're back to 2. 3 years to go before I can swap to buckets. Brian, that should be long enough for you to decide if you can still live with your buckets[;)] Daro, I know you don't like to see Spyders on grass, so i'll post one that didn't make it into one of my other picture sets[:)], just for you[;)]

Well done Brian - also out in mine yesterday - I can only endorse what yous say. I went out for a shortish stint on the B roads. It takes some getting use to changing down and not braking prior to corners you know. As you say the car corners like it was on rails - just remember not to try the same stunts in the damp/wet[&o]! Top was down and wind deflector in place and I really did not get time to think about wind noise etc on these twisty B roads. Sport exhaust was on and the verges were built up so even more temptation to press the loud pedal! Switched the PSE off for a second and it quickly reverted to back on! I guess it may be useful to have it switched off when on the motorway but otherwise I think mine will be left on! I guess it comes back to the three S's why we buy a sports car, Sight, Sound and Speed. Sight - well that's very much in the eye of the beholder. Sound - just make sure you buy one with PSE and lastly Speed - Believe me unless you have driven a Spyder and a Boxster you cannot start to imagine the difference. Everything happens that much quicker, I find myself having to concentrate much more - perhaps that's an age thing[;)] None the less It brings me back to a word I used after my first test Drive in the Nottingham car - SMITTEN[:)]

Rob K could probably confirm this more than my 2 very brief drives in 981's ... but the new car and chassis can not only go even quicker through the twisties they can do it without the need for the stiffer sport suspension set up! So hats off to Porsche enginering and one can only imagine how much harder the 981 sport chassis will go before losing traction dry or wet weather Sound is extremely important in a "sports" car and I am yet to find a single 981 demo car with PSE! so for now I can only say the Spyders with PSE are the greatest sound track ever offered to Boxster drivers Sight ... as you say it's in the eye of the beholder but yesterday I had at least 2 ocassions people looking and discussing the car and one happy snapper at some lights now has my Spyder on their mobile[;)] I would add one more letter to describe the Spyder today "V" for Value. Where can you get so much in all the key sports car areas stated for so little hard earned £'s

Glad to hear you got out for a blast John and I can relate to everything you've said. I got carried away with the capabilities of the car and 'not braking early' became a trait of my driving style even for the daily commute. I got through a set of front pads perhaps earlier than I should have, but it was fun[:)] I've only tried the 981 in cold, damp conditions so I couldn't give it full beans but even when jumping back into the Spider, I had more confidence instantly. The information you receive you can use and the more than is filtered out, the less you know what is going on at the front wheels. I'd guess that the 981 wouldn't urge me to go faster, even though it can no doubt go as fast (then there's the PASM and non-PASM 981 set-up to consider). I'd also guess that to match the unfiltered communication of the Spyder, the 981 would need the Sport Chassis option. It's like the discussion about confidence and the description from the Spyder vs Ferrari 360 review. You'll go faster if you're confident you know what's going on underneath you, regardless of whether another car is just capable.

Oops, how could I miss that early gem? Apologies Dr Spyder! Nice to hear cars being used and enjoyed. As Rob says, the ride/ handling of the 981 is astonishing. It doesn't deliver as raw an experience as the Spyder, which for daily users is no doubt a bonus!

Oh dear. 'They' say it's better not to roll up the rear screen to put it in its storage slot, but to lay it flat in the boot instead. However, it must be better off in the the storage slot than under the rubble. It's not Vrooom's car is it?[;)]

You must've been really proud. How did they get in touch with you to request your car?

With only 65 UK cars and their need for a Silver Speedster their marketing department wrote to me asking if I would be willing to loan the car for the Motorshow etc Whilst very proud to add this to the cars concours winning history I was also quite concerned about the welfare of my pride and joy [:)]
