I agree with MrD that being quick has a lot to do with reading the road ahead & being in the right gear based on what you see and anticipate. Although, my opinion on PDK was formed on the expectation that I'd most likely end up leaving it in auto, where the system is 'blind' to what is ahead. Driving it in manual removes the blind element from the system as you're choosing gears based on reading the road & so for a work out as described by daro I must admit I can't see how that can be anything other than a GOOD drive. I must force myself to keep it in manual the next time I get a loaner because I also have to admit that I more likely have the tendency let it make me lazy, as MrD mentioned a few pages back. In auto its a bit sluggish to get the system to react by stamping on the gas if you're pootling along in normal mode and need to have a quick aggressive squirt without a pre-meditated transition to sport mode. The lower powered cars suffer more I think. The more powerful 911's suffer less the feeling of being caught in the wrong gear. As others have said though, even if I drive it in auto, I should be prepared to take over when necessary. You've given me food for thought daro on trying 987 PDK again but forcing myself to use it as a manual (not at all thinking of swapping the Spyder to PDK). 991/981 PDK though is a better auto but I should start thinking about that in manual mode too to get even more out of it). My previous thoughts on PDK halfway down this page http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=719756&mpage=43ORIGINAL: daro911Well that is like asking Guards Red or Carrera WhiteORIGINAL: kitchens Daro911 Well what is the verdict M v PDK ? Brian Both cars are tremendous performers but the complicated answer I guess is as follows bearing in mind I am a totally commited stick shifter[
]  Drove both cars over identical route and back to back  PDK first out .... Drove the car strictly in manual mode absolutely zero interest in how she goes as an auto.  Driven in manual mode using the sport chrono and then sport + made no difference as I was in total control of all shifts up or down when in either mode. Driven as a manual the gear changes are lightning fast in either direction and of course the throttle feel adjusts in the same fashion as my manual car when in sport chrono mode.  The biggest thrill in the pdk comes from no need to lift off when shifting up a gear and of course the perfectly matched revs when dropping down 1, 2, or 3 gears in a flash.  These PDK chracteristics make for a very rapid machine in the real world so where on paper we are talikng 0.01 secs quicker to 62mph in reality it is a lot more than that for reasons stated above  Without a doubt because of these characteristics I drove the car much quicker through the twisties especially when entering and exiting roundabouts. A life long task of clutch and gear stick action removed from the equation by flicking a paddle made my drive feel so much faster for zero effort at the same time. I exited the car beaming from ear to ear and very impressed indeed[8D]  Time to repeat the 35 miles odd in my short shift manual [&o]  Within a few gear changes I was once again having far too much fun but at a much lower rate of knots.  There is a satisfaction to shifting gears in the traditional fashion and because the clutch and shift are so beatifully matched I found myself grinning with each shift of the yesterdays technology which is disappearing slowly but surely  Conclusion:-  If I had a PDK Spyder for sure it would only ever be driven as a manual. It would deliver all the fun and drama one would expect from a Porsche and I would have no regrets at owning a flappy paddle shifter but I fear I would always be travelling a lot faster than I do with my manual and their would be those occasions where a good spirited drive with a clutch and short shifter would be sorely missed from the adventure  As an aside on Trip 2 Readout (data for actual journey)I returned 26.5 mpg with my manual 6 speed box and only just 23mpg with the PDK over the same route and using 7th gear! So much for more mpg but as stated I was driving it faster for sure  If you are someone like my brother, who has no love for a manual, then the PDK is as good as it gets giving him as much manual interaction as he wants with zero effort. If like me you really enjoy shifting gears with the best clutch and box out there then a PDK will always leave you wanting [
]Â Â Â Could I forgo my manual for a PDK without having any regrets .... Probably but not 100% convinced
                Â
This sums up real world use of PDK nicely. Obviously, if I could drive like mrdemon I would be in the right gear at the right time all the time [ORIGINAL: daro911 As an aside on Trip 2 Readout (data for actual journey)I returned 26.5 mpg with my manual 6 speed box and only just 23mpg with the PDK over the same route and using 7th gear! So much for more mpg but as stated I was driving it faster for sure
Hypothetical question for you[ORIGINAL: MrDemon correctBut the question about PDK is more like Gay vs Straight, Boy VS girl [
] So many times you read "I need to have PDK for the wife" [
] If all these cars are going to be PDK only in the future, lets enjoy what we have now.
[ORIGINAL: MrDemon I thought I had broke my Spyder two weeks ago. went to Donny Porsche, VIP treat, got in the car to drive off and had to stop, car juddered and then stopped "o shit" I thought that did not feel good and now no engine noise. then I noticed I had not put the clutch in when I went to stop at the junction. [] people will be doing auto only driving tests again soon, (My gf sister already is) sad skill to loose driving a manual.
Crikey, it looks detached![ORIGINAL: MrDemon you could always have a new Boxster with PDK and Electric steering if you want to drive true playstation style here is the vid I took of one I had on loan lol do that in the SPyder and you would be across 2 lanes, and people say they cannot tell !!!! even my Audi was better [:-] http://youtu.be/JXlgfbgdoQ4
Sorry Brian, i've never dabbled with photoshop. Is there anyone on here who has photoshop skills? We could add 'Customisation Booth' to the list of activities going on in here[ORIGINAL: kitchens I rather like that photo of the Red car with the black wheels and the Red cheese graters [] and with mine having the Red hoops it would blend in and be nice i think ?? If the air intakes front and rear where painted Black or even Red perhaps you technical guys could do a Photo shop to see how it would look. Brian
Pretty shocking by any standards but when driven normally I must confess to not have noticed anything strange about the electricity driven racks [&o] When you hop between your Spyder and Kman are their any obvious differences between the pair in the fashion they perform and handle on the highways or is it fair to say same backside other cheek [ORIGINAL: MrDemon here is the vid I took of one I had on loan lol do that in the SPyder and you would be across 2 lanes, and people say they cannot tell !!!! even my Audi was better [:-] http://youtu.be/JXlgfbgdoQ4
P.S. MrD, you should try a 981 Cayman and compare the difference in steering set up to the 981 Boxster. You will definitely be able to tell the difference.ORIGINAL: flat6Crikey, it looks detached![ORIGINAL: MrDemon you could always have a new Boxster with PDK and Electric steering if you want to drive true playstation style here is the vid I took of one I had on loan lol do that in the SPyder and you would be across 2 lanes, and people say they cannot tell !!!! even my Audi was better [:-] http://youtu.be/JXlgfbgdoQ4]
