Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

ORIGINAL: dyllan
ORIGINAL: flat6
ORIGINAL: dyllan Looks like a 991 GT3 for me then as I missed out last year on a nice black one []
What do you mean?
I mean that I doubt I shall get a suitable Spyder now so the next best option prob a 991 GT3,
Here's the car you missed out on. What does it have that you haven't seen since? http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=720168&mpage=1&key=&#720168 A 991 GT3 is £100K but I certainly wouldn't consider it a next option to a £40K Spyder whether that be price or type of car or running costs.
ORIGINAL: dyllan The dilemma between a 981 would be the 997TT gen 2 pdk now starting around £70k which seems good value . I do really like a soft top though and certainly wouldn't go the 991 cab route currently as I don't think it's worth the premium over the 981 . We will see what's out there in the spring when I have more idea of how many pennies will be left after the Poole build finishes . If a nice black spyder came back on the market I would still be VERY tempted!! And maybe get a 997 pdk for the weekly commute ?
ORIGINAL: dyllan I guess the truth is I would like a 991 everyday and a black Spyder for weekend fun !!!
If you're considering the 991 GT3 it's good to hear the Poole build is no longer holding you back! You should go for the 991 GT3 and if in time you still want a Spyder, buy one as well[;)]

ORIGINAL: jdpef356 Dyllan Why settle for second best?[&o] Everytime you look out of the window and see your second choice on the drive you will think 'if only I would have waited! The itch will not disappear and one day you wil have to scratch it. I had to wait some 6 months for mine - I would have still be waiting now had the correct spec/colour etc now come up. Get the web site car alerts set up and one day you will join us.
Great thinking Spyderman John[;)]

If you have the wheels why not have the interior to match? You forgot to add:- 'If you have the wheels why not have the interior to match If your colour blind!'[;)]

That one certainly ISN'T what I am looking for !! Linda has vetoed white , black is the definite colour and having tried buckets I am afraid my back will only manage the sports seats So I have rather limited range to choose from as PDK also a must for SWMBO!! I guess I would compromise on the bi xenons if a good one came along though as otherwise I really don't think my car is out there

Dyllan Buy the Spyder you want[:)] When the time comes to change it for 991 GT3 your Spyder will be worth a lot more than when you purchased it. Who knows you may exchange the Spyder for the 991 GT3 and get some change![;)]

You should get a deal as a black sport seated pdk car must be last on most people's list, But goes to show there is a car for every one. 991gt3. If you have not got you name down there is a 2 year waiting list unless you want to pay over list

Rob Look at the article in the Scottish region " Cars on the Prom " click into the drop down on the track day and there is couple of your car . Brian

Thanks for that, some great shots there. Was one of the Spyders in the prom not black, PDK with sports seats? Flat6 might recall better than me.

Yep a nice chap in R6 has that spec and looked good in the metal. Spoke to him on the prom & he's still loving the car & can't see what he'd replace it with. All things considered the Spyderwas one of the rarest modern Porsche on the prom. The 991 was equally rare as a modern car but it has been around less than half as long. Of the white (Rob's), silver & black Spyders on the prom the white & then black grabbed me the most.

All that talk of Caymans is making me want one, (but it will pass[;)]). If I was running one alongside the Spyder it'd be the Cayman S Black Edition (no, i'm not challenging your choice MrDemon[;)]). I like the all black look now (but much prefer white on the Spyder). Yes it's a marketing run-out special but looking at it as just an 'S', it's a nice looking one IMHO. It'd create more difference between the two (than the R) having a different suspension set-up to the Spyder. Would probably go for PDK to give even more reason to drive it when in a different mood & wanting to get a different experience to driving my (manual) Spyder. It has the same 330bhp tune as the R but I expect, for the most part, that it'll make little difference on the road where I won't be constantly up in the high revs where the extra 10hp lives (well, except when i'm feeling like a brute & letting PDK in Sport Plus mode do its thing (in auto) for a few miles).

ORIGINAL: flat6 Comparing the engines below, it’s only above 6000rpm that the Cayman R’s pulls away on the graphs. Therefore, you need to be approaching the red-line on the revs to access the extra power. (Both have the same peak torque at 4750 rpm but the R's peak power is at 7400rpm vs the Spyder's at 7200rpm, as per the Cayman S)

As you say, the R has slightly more power - albeit at higher revs - than the S/Spyder but they have identical torque figures. I'm sure that this is achieved by the R's revised (freer flowing?) exhaust manifold, which would tend to enhance the top end performance, and also by DME tweaks since the engine developers have so many tunableable functions which are controlled by the DME: 1) DFI - Fuel can be injected at dfferent times and in varying quantities throughout the power stroke; 2) Inlet valve timing and lift - +/- 20deg of crankshaft advance/retard in conjunction with low and high lift camshaft lobes; 3) Ignition timing; 4) Intake resonance manifold operation - to optimise induction airflow and boost mid-range torque. I suspect that Porsche have tweaked the first three to boost the R's power but have left the fourth option alone. Jeff
Anyway, scratch that idea. Running two 2 seater cars would get me nowhere in my current personal scenario. But there's no harm in day dreaming every once in a while[:)].

Good find. I can relate where it says "The R performs the best in transitional phases when it is in the second, third and fourth gears. It goes into corners and out of them in a way the powertrain and the chassis have been designed to perform at their best." In the convoy through some tight twisty roads on the way to Angelsey the Spyder had no equal.

Went to Goodwood today and saw 4 other Spyders, 2 black, one white and one silver. They all looked good, even amongst some pretty tasty machinery on display!

Car show awards another Spyder [;)] Just picked up a 3rd place at a local car show today , nice Rossetti very unexpected as there where a large amount of cars there ,think it was for Best Modern Class .To be fair it was well admired and had 14 Porsches on our Tipec display a nice 944 won 2nd place in its class ,so a good day for Porsches.
