Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

yup - that looks great - awaiting getting my air intakes sprayed.... the sticker in gold looks great on the black car - but not so sure it will stand out enough against my white... will go step by step... Had also been toying with idea of the wing mirrors, but not sure if I am straying too far from original spec, if you know what I mean?

ORIGINAL: jdpef356 Yes and noteably the White/Red Ridgeway car by far the worst spec IMO (regardless of colour combo) started at almost £45k. If the Ridgeway salesman is reading this - try reducing price to £35K and I still don't think you will be picking up a sales bonus![]
I think we can safely say this was a one off specification bespoke car for a one off owner who has now passed the car along ....OR is it on S.O.R. as it would be an extremely brave dealer who would buy this spec for a Spyder IMO[&o] John I am not convinced it would sell at much above £30k! as is but with a wheel change back to original spec it would certainly have more potential

ORIGINAL: Andy Fagan I'm looking to change my old Boxster but although the Spyders look great without the tent, I just don't like the roof on them and as it will be used a lot in summer and winter I am thinking of a Cayman R. I looked at one in my OPC (Chester) http://www.porschehost.com/ApprovedStockIframe.asp?opc=29 but it lacked a few toys I want, even though I know they are supposed to be lightweight. I really would like A/C and Sat Nav with phone availability, Sports seats, Xenon's (Though not essential), And a decent colour. What other options would you all recommend?? There is one in London which has most of the toys but it has done quite a few miles and I'm not sure about the colour http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/clients.show_car?sid_=4776667380P73HB2I3ASODQSZY9UIKO&pnr_=1&lnr_=10&caller_=
Hi Andy. I would recommend Sport Chrono (it can be retrofitted). Some will say don't bother with it but I think you get a lot of enjoyment out of having 2 throttle maps. With sport mode on, it gives the car a sense of urgency that is fun and in tune with an aggressive blast. Switch it off when just wanting to cruise around and when driving over a load of speed hump. You'll have the engine revving like an amateur when crawling over speed bumps in 1st gear with Sport Mode throttle map switched on [:D] Seats, you'd heard enough about that on here, but buy buckets if you really want them. They'll be plenty of Cayman R's with them and it's a bargain for what they cost to retrofit. Wheels, you've heard a lot on here about that too. Stick to the Spyder wheel imho. Colour is a personal thing but I personally think the Peridot Green, whilst a 'nice' striking colour, is not one of Porsche's popular bespoke colours. In it's favour it will make the car unmistakably an R as I don't expect Porsche will use it again in a hurry.
Porsche-Cayman-R-001_0.jpg
The traditional solid Porsche colours work well on the R, namely, Carrara White, Guards Red and others mentioned further on. Many of the special edition Porsche of the 987 & 997 era were launched in solid colours rather than metallic. E.g. 997 Sport Classic, Speedster, GT3 RS 4.0 etc. etc. If it was me i'd be open to any colour the R is offered in, except Peridot. The other metallics were Basalt Black (Black is also be available non-metallic) Aqua Blue, Dark Blue, Platinum Silver, Metior Grey and... Macadamia metallic (didn't notice that before). As i've said before though, opinion counts for nothing but as you asked, hope it gives you food for thought. Being that you already own a 987 you'll know whether you're bothered about a leather interior. A bit of trivia: With the R you'll get the cool SportDesign steering wheel even if you have a manual. (They said that was unique to the 997 GTS but that didn't last long did it!) (the SportDesign steering wheel as originally reserved for the PDK paddleshift wheel and was then made available for manual on the GTS) You do also have another choice that wasn't available on the Spyder which is Speed yellow. I'll be keen to ride a couple of passenger laps on track if you do get it [;)]

Just came across this whilst looking for yellow R pics just then. Maybe this will do you instead Andy[:D] Take a look at the gallery and see all the mods. It looks like they've put it back on it's original rims and made off with the wheels they must've have surely finished the car off with... http://gtcarlot.com/colors/car/24580304.html

ORIGINAL: Andy Fagan Thanks Cecil, interesting input!!
You're welcome mate. That should've said, if you want buckets, hold out until the right car comes along with them, as there will be plenty of R's with buckets.

ORIGINAL: Andy Fagan Thanks Cecil, interesting input!!
If you want a manual this is about the best one out there today http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201306267491963/sort/default/usedcars/price-from/35000/price-to/75000/model/cayman/make/porsche/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/page/1/keywords/R/postcode/e95lw/radius/1501/advert-type/standard-listing?logcode=ucnnp If you want an auto the choice is far greater

Thanks Daro911, I saw that add but if you go to sellers website it says it is 1 owner and was an ex porsche management car. It makes you wonder why it isn't being sold through the OPC network?? I know the OPC's casnt sell them if they have been over revved as they cant put the warranty on them. Also it has the turbo wheels which look aweful, but they could always be changed.

Andy ... Have a word with Cecil about how easy it is to live with a Spyder 24/7 and like you he isn't really a topless fan but thinks the compromise is worth the exclusivity and fun factor[:D] Joking aside there are a couple of low mileage cracking spec Spyders available today at bargain prices too [;)]

I love my R, It's the better all round car to be fair. then you have to think about living with one every day so you want some toys. My R is fully loaded, But again Spyder wheels are a must have, as is AC and PSE For me I love the full leather, both my cars are full leather, it ups the inside no end. the green is awesome colour every one seems to like it in real life. I wanted red but you never seem to see red ones for sale

Agreed with that although not too bothered about full leather but it would be nice. I quite like the colour but I wonder if in 5 - 10 years time we might say "Did we actually let that happen?" [:D] I don't believe that the perfect car will ever come along and some compromises will be inevitable.

Would be interested to see the weight difference in the spyder to cayman R, Recently met a manual owner with no a/c at brands and he's came in at 1298kg (no roof) While mine with a/c and heavy pdk was 1352kg with roof ect road trim.

Is that 54K weight difference really a big thing in the day to day running of the car ....i could see maybe on a focused track car but as a daily driver ? i carry my full cleaning gear around in mine all the time added to that the hairdressing stuff mine is a real heavy weight [:D][:D]

ORIGINAL: Fire_2 Would be interested to see the weight difference in the spyder to cayman R,
Checkout that info plus loads more here[;)] http://fastestlaps.com/cars/porsche_cayman_r.html CURB WEIGHT 1320 kg http://fastestlaps.com/cars/porsche_boxster_spyder.html CURB WEIGHT 1275kg

I can easy tell carrying my other half about at 56kg and on track with a 80KG person is a massive change. My spyder is faster than my R and the R has more BHp so the weight out is working for the car far better. It's just nice to have that advantage imo. My spyder must be 1260kg in my Spec and no roof, no fuel My R prob 80kg more. with r spec tyres no weight and PCCB , you can out brake any thing by 100's of yards on the road. At donnington my mate said I was 50 yards later on the brakes on the straight. every one is totally shocked at the Spyder stopping distance's who I take out in it. BHP is hard to find, losing weight imo is better. again look at Lotus and why they do so well on track with only 150BHp. Spyder in my Spec is one of the lightest cars Porsche have made since the 964 RS lightweight and that's going back to 1990 ! when you drive my old M3 on a B road it makes you realise just how nice light weight cars are to drive and why the M3 lasted 3 months. It makes the car for me.

I have no idea what Cayman R's are on the market daro. What makes this one the pick of the bunch in your opinion.
