Rob I'm surprised to read that, as a Spyder owner, you would want PDK and SC. Having driven the 981 manual, the gearchange is SO good I would not consider PDK at the 3k extra cost. Yes, the rear vis. on the Boxster with the roof up is very poor, hence you couldnt see the BMW, or anything else behind. If you prefer the smart look have you seen the pics of the 981 Cayman S in GT Silver?[] ChrisORIGINAL: rob.kellock The silver one looks really good, the yellow and the white rather less so. Usability is a big factor for me. This morning I drove to work with the roof down and as I backed into my space, the roof put itself back up. The Spyder would have stayed in the garage and if I had used it, the roof would have stayed on for the 15 minute commute. Mind you, for the commute, I'd want PDK, if I had PDK I'd want sports chrono and suddenly we're another £3k down... The car is certainly striking - I couldn't initially work out where a BMW had gone that had been rapidly undertaking the row of cars behind me - it had drawn up alongside and the passenger was taking photos on her phone! I have never experienced that before despite my handsome good looks! I'm going to take it to the police station now - its bound to impress my 12 year old burglar client if I can get him out []

I know what you mean Chris. The lip on the rear of the 981 is just enough not to need an extra wing for finishing the tail's look.ORIGINAL: chrisHflat6 I think the Cayman S on 20 inch wheels and PASM would fit the bill just fine, it looks a lot nicer and far cheaper than the 991 duck tail.[] ChrisORIGINAL: flat6 Yeah I saw the duck tail 991 there. It does suit the car and I kinda like it, but it has an unusually blunt shape for a 'wing'. The 996 GT3 RS is almost 9 years old. What kind of warranty do they put on the older cars? Just a year? Or is it sold outside of the Approved Used scheme? So you'd go for a 981 S with Sports suspension? Or you want something more 'R' than that?
ORIGINAL: rob.kellock I'm thinking S, manual, white with black roof, 20 inch Carrera alloys, bucket seats, sports suspension, sports exhaust, rear parking sensors, magic wipers, sound system plus, interior trim painted and painted centre console. Cayman R style Spyder stripe on the side, would go on door and front bumper like the photo Rob posted a few pages back. Lists at £52k though and would probably be worth less than the Spyder within a couple of years and worthless when they bring out the real Boxster R!
Rob, usability of the roof certainly cannot be a big factor in your current ride. I take it you mean that if you replace the Spyder, you want the new car to have a slightly different purpose and more usable in terms of getting the top down more when the whether is a bit iffy? I know what you mean in that regard as my top hasn't been off for a while, but if it was electric and might have whipped it down on the odd fresh day. IMHO the rear visibility in the 981 is poor but then so is the Spyder, but I accept it in the Spyder as an uncompromising car. The 981 rear deck is so high (or the seating is relatively low compared to the rear deck) that the rear dimensions of the car are unquantifiable from the driver's seat. I'm looking forward to sitting in a 981 Cayman and expecting / hoping that the engine bay is lower and hence gives a good view out through the rear hatch window.ORIGINAL: rob.kellock Usability is a big factor for me. For those who are looking for a more practical solution, I think the Cayman is going to be the best of the bunch (and for looks to[]). I found in moving from 987 Boxster to Cayman the rear vis. in terms of seeing whats behind you was a lot better. Those side windows help too. I dont see why the 981 should be any different judging from the photos at the Detroit show taken through the rear hatch. I should get your name down before the launch, guys[]ORIGINAL: flat6 I'm looking forward to sitting in a 981 Cayman and expecting / hoping that the engine bay is lower and hence gives a good view out through the rear hatch window.
I concur with the remarks on rear view on the 981. Had my car in for service yesterday and the loan car was a 981. The Centre did offer to wash the loan car but I said don't worry and off I went. Headed onto the M11 and thought I would give it a run prior to coming upto the Average speed cameras. Looked in the Rear View Mirror and could barely see a thing! It was a bit like looking through a Pair of Fish Net tights! (sorry about that I'm doing a bit of a ROB) too much information. Whats going on with the wind deflector and rear view in General?[&:] The wing mirrors were also really dirty and that put pay to having a run down the outside lane. Yes a nice car, but just that , sort of nice but nothing for me to get excited about. Lots of nice touches and Im stillnot sure about the Coperate Tunnell layout that all new Porsche models now get![&:] A drive in sports car in my mind should be an occasion, something to look forward to every time you drive it - I'm afraid the 981 did not deliver on that front. It was just kinda NICE![]
All very helpful observations gents. I am going to the Cayman launch on 7th March at Bolton and quite looking forward to seeing what that is like. Will they come with a big sunroof? []
Rob, similarly to you is that i'd be looking for a 981 that doesn't exist. To go from the Spyder to 981, i'd want some kind of Cayman R / RS / Clubsport but then i'm happy to continue with any uncompromising features, which is not going to be the perfect recipe for everyone and the 'S' will be the much better option for many. I'll be at my local Cayman launch. However, i'm mulling over the consideration that my next Porsche should have 4 seats because I enjoy driving them so much that I hate using the wife's car for family journeys. If I go that route it will unfortunately rule out the 981 Cayman[&o] But i'm with ChrisH. IMHO 981 Cayman is the best new Porsche on sale, certainly on looks alone[] Price (vs 991) and practicality (vs 981B) only add points to top the table even further IMHO[]
Here is the French blog, there are some shots of the rear and hatch open. http://www.leblogauto.com/zenphoto/salon/2013/D-troit_2013/Porsche_Cayman/ ChrisORIGINAL: flat6 Good summary John about the 'sportiness'. ChrisH, please can you send a pointer to the Detroit show pics showing the rear view.
So, 5 months, 11500 hits, 1000+ replies and 51 pages later.... We're back down to 1 car left at OPCs. Chris Harris is buying one, one chap on Pistonheads bought his second last week, another his third today! Perhaps the power of the internet will accelerate the desirability of a car introduced in the middle of the country's worst ever recession? But that new Cayman looks good in silver []ORIGINAL: daro911 On this beautiful last of the summer (wine) weekends I was surprised to see how few OPC's have any Spyders left in their webs (5!)  Are they becoming extinct so soon [] Â
This is the link for Spyderman on No.3 Wonder if the Essex seller will shortly be popping up with his post for buying a 2nd Spyder [] It looks like we are all amateurs being on Spyder No.1 still [] [link=http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=1243583&i=160&mid=23691&nmt=Bloody+Spyder+Addiction%21]http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=1243583&i=160&mid=23691&nmt=Bloody+Spyder+Addiction%21[/link]ORIGINAL: flat6 So, there's certainly buyers out there. PC Wilmslow mustn't want to drop their pants just yet. Send me a link to the thread for the guy on his 3rd please, ta.

Still more uncovered reviews: Excellence Magazine - 'Revisiting the Boxster Spyder: Still impressive' "—Some focus heavily on the Spyder’s top and miss what makes the car truly special: 1) the 174-pound weight loss (offset largely in our test car by the optional A/C, radio, full leather, sport exhaust, etc.) and 2) the sport suspension. And it’s the latter that really sets the car apart from every other 987, and every other new Porsche. The more time we spend in this car, the more sure we are that it is Porsche’s best-handling car in a decade, maybe ever." http://www.excellence-mag.com/of-note/revisiting-the-boxster-spyder-still-impressive#.UQwxER1dZ4N
Another great find flat6 and can't argue with the main jist of the article which can now be well and truly underlined by the fact there are multi owning Spydermen out there in barely 3 years of the car coming to market Amazing how despite the Spyders presumed short comings it is a very hard car to replace and appears to be one some folk keep coming back to time and time again! I must confess despite this being my 6th Boxster since 1997 I am in no rush what so ever to trade out and up to a 981 as I am sure at sometime Porsche will be offering another special and the longer they take the longer I can have my current version []ORIGINAL: flat6 Still more uncovered reviews: [link=http://www.excellence-mag.com/of-note/revisiting-the-boxster-spyder-still-impressive#.UQwxER1dZ4N]http://www.excellence-mag.com/of-note/revisiting-the-boxster-spyder-still-impressive#.UQwxER1dZ4N[/link]
Oh well done, excellent find... Again! Great review, I think they liked it!
Meanwhile on Pistonheads: "Has somebody increased the price of their Spyder from 40k to 45k this week or have I missed something? There seems to be about 10 sold in the past two weeks. What's happening?"
