Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

MrDemon said:
the tails do seem a cheap after thought, not good for that owner, very sad to see.
I don't think they were an after thought at all just a clever simple solution to attaching the tails

It would appear the bean counters budget for the catch may have been met at the cost of good quality engineering and the engineers have compromised on design and quality if these tails catches are failing like we seem to be hearing on the www

Porsche are now an obsessed cash making cow for its masters VAG and it looks like VW will be needing every extra euro it can raise for decades now the Americans are taking them to the financial cleaners not to mention Tom Dick & Harry

To to me it looks like they designed the roof with no tails, then last minute some one must have said "it needs tails" so they sown 2 on and fitted a plastic mounting Plate.

they look very after thought to me and serve no usefull purpose.

no eng would design a roof with no boot access, it was prob so late to the design it never made wind tunnel stress tests.

do owners find them noisy at speed ? As they must cause a lot of drag to rip them out the mounting socket.

Read the test reports this car is capable of 180 mph with the roof up no serious wind noise noted in the many I have read I think Mr D as much as you love the 981 Spyder NOT even you must have to see this Mk 2 roof system is a step forward over your beloved 987 plus you can access rear boot with roof up you need to study the concept with the rose tinted 987 sunglasses off before totally trashing the 981 for a change [;)]

Far more importantly though, the [link=http://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-porsche/porsche-confirms-new-boxster-spyder/31806]Boxster Spyder[/link]is certainly liveable with the roof up. Yes, there's a fair amount more wind noise than in a regular Boxster, to the point where you will think something isn't quite closed initially. It is a surprise, but you soon get used to it. Moreover, at no point did the Boxster feel vulnerable in the very worst that Storm Abigail could throw at it; 180mph felt like it would challenge the roof less! The point being that you could live with the Boxster Spyder and its roof everyday should you want to.

Having owned and driven both on the motoway, i find the 981 to have less noise at speed.

I thought the tails came away due to them not being locked into place..... not just coming away?

Looking very cool !! [8D]

I take it this is your Voodoo baby Daro.

Is that a new 718 hiding behind ??

I went to the launch night for the 718 at the local OPC this week.

Would take a 981 GTS or Spyder every time (and probably an S).

Trying to tie up the heritage of the original 718 to the new boxster all seems very strained.

Most though will probably love a new shiny model though.

Take it back sadly its not mine [8|]

Yes that's the 718 in Lava Orange which seemed to be the main colour they were being painted on my factory tour back in late February

I am not talking about the 987.2 car, the 987.2 is noisy we all know that, I mean a lot more noise than the GTS 981.

Lets not bring the 987.2 car into it, I did not. But if you want too, it's one step forward three back IMO, and I said the 987.2 roof was still ****, It's the main reason I did not order a 981 plus the eps. Every one knows I wanted a trick electric item, I made that quite clear.

You say no extra noise then print a review which says "there a fair amount more wind noise, it's a surprise"

you cannot get rear access from the outside , you have the release the extra flappy sown on tails 1st, !

You cannot post black is white even if you love the cars !

I have been upfront with the GT4 short comings , they are only cars.

the 987/2 roof is impractical but has style and character. removable rear section makes the car so stylish with that out and the windows down, like nothing else.

I am without doubt that the 987/2 will become the benchmark that all other Spyders will be compared to.

It wont be the fastest, quietest, loudest or most refined but I strongly feel it will become in time the most stylish desired boxster ever made.

I may now have sold my car but that does not change my opinion. there may be a time in the future were i may regret selling as many others have and perhaps may not be even able to afford to buy it back, but that life

Only 3 987 Spyders for sale on PH today + 5 overpriced 981's! + TWENTY SEVEN (27) GT4's[] and zero of either flavour at an OPC - Interesting times ahead if the head count could be just 2/3 of each Spyder at any given moment in time [;)]
