[link=https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche]Porsche[/link] is developing the most driver-focused version of its current [link=https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/porsche/718-boxster]718 Boxster[/link] with the naturally aspirated, flat-six engine of the latest [link=https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/porsche/911-gt3]911 GT3[/link], instead of a more potent version of the regular car's four-pot.
The next Boxster Spyder, which will be heavily related to the 718 [link=https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/porsche/cayman-gt4-2015-2016]Cayman GT4[/link], will use a 4.0-litre engine in place of the current hottest engine in the 718 range, the turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four, in order to stay more closely aligned with its predecessors - which have all been hailed by enthusiasts as excellent driver's cars.
Porsche Motorsport has stuck to this formula, which has been integrated into Spyders [link=https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/porsche/boxster-spyder-2015-2016]since the special Boxster variant was introduced in 2009,[/link] to give the car an even more responsive drivetrain, with the intention of making it the most involving Boxster to go on sale yet.
“Natural aspiration is one of our main USPs,” [link=https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/next-porsche-cayman-gt4-stick-naturally-aspirated-flat-six]Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development at Porsche, told Autocar earlier this year[/link]. “At Motorsport, we think we can achieve throttle response and immediacy a little bit better with an atmospheric high-revving engine than any kind of turbo.”
Output for the 4.0-litre unit is rated at 493bhp at 8250rpm in the 911 GT3, but the Boxster Spyder’s power may be slightly down on this to leave breathing space for its more expensive and larger sibling.
The previous Boxster Spyder used a 3.8-litre flat-six taken from the 911 Carrera of the time and was good for 370bhp. An output of around 425bhp seems likely.
To signify its driver focus, the car will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but those after maximum on-track performance will be able to select the option of a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.
The Boxster Spyder will also go on a hefty diet, ditching cabin insulation and even a radio and air conditioning. The Boxster’s electric folding soft top will also go, with a manually removable ‘tent top’ in its place. These weight savings will combine with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber to make the car the sharpest handling production Boxster yet produced.
Much of the design treatment applied the Boxster Spyder will mirror those featured on the Boxster GTS. The Cayman GT4 will likely get the same adjustments, along with a more prominent rear wing to signify its even harder status.
No arrival date for the Boxster Spyder has been set, but the arrival of the new GTS models, which went on sale last month, suggests it could be later this year.

This is getting repetitive........and boring.
I'm waiting to see what happens. Then I'll decide what the future holds for my 718 CS PDK.

I'm sure the new Spyder what ever engine it ends up with will be a truly amazing car but I cannot stretch to one so I will stick with my Guards Red 987 Spyder with short shift manual,buckets , PSE , Sports Chrono and Spyder alloys which I have just got out of hibernation after 6 long months in the garage! Every year it's like a new car again and puts a huge grin on my face ever time I drive it for the first time. I'm sure many of you know what I'm talking about .Here is to lots of warm sunny days round the corner for all Spydermen.

Yes indeed prices are creeping up the Viper green CR at 911 Virgin looks to be following suit .
As I have said what can you get for circa 50k in the Porsche world that's as good as a Spyder or CR.

] The sound makes the DAB redundant The colour to sample option seems to be back off the Porsche menu so it might be even more unique than ever []
