Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Roof Issues

i haven’t had any updates from other owners since my car was in for a new roof, so I don’t know how those with issues have been resolved.

However, I was in my OPC today for a first Interim Service and in our general discussion they told me that Porsche were no longer approving the replacement of faulty/damaged roofs. they were not sure what was being approved, but I guess it is some sort of repair

After all the work involved replacing your roof a repair makes far more sense to me especially as the actual roof hasn't been modded to stop this occurring again [&:] Personally I would be happy with a repair

Porsche Boxster Spyder (2015) revealed: meet the al fresco Cayman GT4

Published: 01 April 2015

[link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/porsche/boxster/] [/link]► Porsche Boxster Spyder is back! ► Unveiled at the 2015 New York show ► Manual roof, 370bhp, thrills aplenty

You knew it was coming – [link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/porsche/porsche-boxster-spyder-reborn-for-2016/]we scooped it last month[/link]. Now the (short) wait is over: meet the new 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder, unveiled at the [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-events/new-york/2015/new-york-motor-show-2015-a-z-of-all-the-new-cars/]2015 New York motor show[/link].

It’s not the first Boxster Spyder, of course. The previous-gen model of 2010 became something of a cult classic among Porsche fans, valued for its pared-down kerbweight, keen chassis and retro speedster styling. No pressure for its successor then, but the present 981-series Boxster is such a talented starting point that this is unlikely to be a disappointing car.

What makes the new 2015 Boxster Spyder special?

This is a Boxster for driving purists (or perhaps that should be puritans). You’ll need to use old fashioned elbow grease to raise and lower the fabric roof, and a proper manual gearbox is the only transmission option.

That’s connected to a rather brilliant engine: another development of Porsche’s 3.8-litre flat-six, moonlighting from its day job in the [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-911-carrera-s-2012-review/]911 Carrera S[/link] (and weekend work in the [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-cayman-gt4-2015-review/]Cayman GT4[/link]). In the Boxster Spyder it’s tuned to 370bhp. It’ll polish off 62mph in 4.5 seconds and top speed is no less than 180mph. In a Boxster!

Interesting tail…

Like its predecessor, the Spyder gets a pair of bumpy buttresses behind the seats to make it stand out from the rest of the range. According to Porsche, they’re cribbed from the 718 Spyder racing car of the ’60s. They culminate in a kicked-up ducktail spoiler that’s pure 2.7 RS. Meanwhile the front and rear bumpers are borrowed from the Cayman GT4.

The seats are a bit special, too. They’re superlight shell-backed carbon buckets like those of the [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-918-spyder-2014-review/]918 supercar[/link]. There’s no adjustability for the backrests – you’ll need to suffer for your art if you drive a Spyder.

Speaking of suffering, so seriously does the Spyder take its dieting that you don’t even get a radio as standard. Or air-con. (Don’t worry, both can be optioned back in. And Porsche won’t even charge you for the privilege, remarkably).

Okay. Deep breath. How much?

That’ll be £60,459. While that’s an eyebrow-raising premium of around £20k over the base 2.7-litre Boxster, it’s around £7k more than a Boxster GTS. Look at it that way, and factor in the uprated brakes, unique bodywork and 911 engine transplant the Spyder entails, and it doesn’t seem so bad. Or maybe we’re getting carried away.

It’ll be available a little earlier than expected, reaching UK showrooms in July 2015, with order books open now. If you want one, don’t delay, as the Cayman GT4 essentially sold out in hours and CAR's had a queue of readers complaining they missed out.

As noted above, have just had my first 'Interim" service at 8500 miles or thereabouts. Just in time for a big schlepp around Europe (probably another 2500 miles).

Service was carried out by PC Chester. Friendly service from both the front of house staff, the Service Manager, and those in the workshop. Certainly, on my experience, I would hoghly recommend them

I've just postponed my first service from tomorrow until 1st May due to poor weather / state of roads (we had snow followed by a monsoon yesterday) and to having no plans to use the car in April anyway. So it will stay SORN'd under its cover and on its trickle charger for another month (that will be 6 months since it last saw the light of day!)

Update on the Michelins

I was thinking to go with the PSS but thought i would run it past Michelin .

A bit of an unexpected response , and not much help so far .

John,

The PSS is only available on the 265.

We need to clarify some information on the PS4Ss available as the rear set are MO marked tyres (Mercedes) which we have recommended only to fit in sets of 4.

I'm still trying to get through to my colleague who'll have a definitive answer on whether mixing an MO homolgated PS4S with a standard might lead to mechanical issues.

Kind regards,

Graeme

It could be a while before summer arrives in Huddersfield, John, although it is sunny today so I've treated the Macan to a wash!

the 265 are for designed for the Carrera GT so that's what makes the N spec a joke when they will fit front GT tyres to the rear of a Cayman !!!!

MICHELIN Customer Care are zero help and will give you false information.

SO N spec is best avoided in PS4S and PSS as they are NOT for your car, nor are M spec, just buy normal tyres with no marking, it's the safest way.

Tyres from Costco Warehouse

They list the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 as follows:

[font="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"]Michelin 235/35 ZR20 (92)Y PILOT SPORT 4 S XL N0[/font]

£195.99 (inc VAT)

[font="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"]Michelin 265/35 ZR20 (99)Y PILOT SPORT 4 S XL N0[/font]

£259.99 (inc VAT) Plus an additional £8.40 inc VAT fitting charge per tyre

Customer Care , where is that these days ? ha ha . Tried Porsche CC a few years ago , never again..

I will go with PSS 🍻 Mr D

Unfortunately, if Porsche confirm our concerns about possible mechanical damage mixing the non N rated tyres above, the only N rated tyre we could safely recommend is in our winter Alpin PA4 range.

Please don’t hesitate to get back if you have any more queries. “

Graeme

There are NO N spec 19" summer tyres from Michelin

But we are talking Spyders here and, certainly for the 981, these are all 20". Or am I misunderstanding your point?

It's turbo Jonny asking for his 987.2 new red spyder which the last owner skimped on tyres with :)

yes you can now buy 981 20" PS4S in N spec for a 981 Spyder which is great but was not the topic :)
