Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

who knows ! Likes... the new wheels ...side GT4 covers ... exhaust configuration . Dislikes ..front end needs the current Spyder /GT4 bonnet/ front grills ...PORSCHE script ,but they all seem to have these stuck on blocks ...does any know if these are removable on the current range off cars ?would look so much nicer with just Spyder /GT 4 on the rear .Just speculation at present as they are 2 different cars used in the spy shots and earlier pics showed the current front end . Price will certainly be a lot more than the base 981 Spyder was at £60K recon will be in the mid £70s ,as stated Cayman being the starting model ..but the previous models where the opposite . Would defo spec it with PDK this time .

Will it be above, alongside or below the GT4 version

Will it get the GT4 suspension components & PASM this time around along with the better wheels & tyre combo

Will Porsche have the kahooners to really let these 2 top of the range 718's unleash their full potential or must both still be below a 991.2 GT3 if so can't see either getting the paddle shift box

I think the premiums achieved on both previous 981 versions must have sent a green light to up the spec, performance and of course the list price this time around :ROFLMAO:

Scooped: Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder A special limited edition Boxster Fly roof and nat-asp flat-six power

The new Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder due in 2018 reintroduces a famous name from the sports car maker's back catalogue: Spyder. Last used in [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-boxster-spyder-2015-review/]2015 for a 370bhp 3.8-litre kick[/link], our new spy photos from Sweden prove there's a new one coming for the newly four-cylinder powered 718 range too.

Except this one won't use the boxer four-cylinder engine: instead, you can expect to see a flat six shoehorned amidships, on loan from Porsche's GT division. Which is a very good thing indeed...

78-porsche-boxster-spyder.jpg

These new spyshots capture the Spyder on winter test in Sweden; our photographer was able to get up close to the fly-topped 718 as it stopped for fuel, as part of a convoy of future Porsches.

[h2]So which flat-six is likely to power the Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder?[/h2]Think a roadster version of the [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-cayman-gt4-2015-review/]Cayman GT4[/link] and you're on the right lines. Word is the naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine will displace 4.0 litres and develop some 430bhp - slightly detuned from its 911 GT3 application, in other words.

'That could explain the fact that the exhaust pipes have grown and moved position compared to the last Boxster Spyder,' said our man with the long lens. 'We also noticed the same on the 718 Cayman GT4 prototype when we spotted it in 2017.'

[h2]Inside the new Spyder[/h2]We've also snuck a look inside the new Spyder, as drivers stopped off to refuel their prototypes on winter test.

81-porsche-boxster-spyder.jpg

Carbon-backed sports seats are visible in this example, plus an Alcantara-rimmed steering wheel and manual transmission lever. It's not too stripped out, however: full PCM sat-nav is present and correct.

Six-cylinder power is likely to recapture some of the fizz that made the original [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-boxster-spyder-2010-review/]2009 Boxster Spyder[/link] a firm favourite among Porschephiles. GT car chief Andreas Preuninger confirmed to CAR last year that nat-asp, high-revving engines would remain a core part of Porsche's most special cars for many years to come.

A six-speed manual transmission is on the cards, as confirmed by our interior spyshot above, and our photos also suggest that lighter alloy wheels, track-focused tyres, an aero package and brake upgrade will be offered on the 718 Spyder.

83-porsche-boxster-spyder.jpg

The lightweight, fly-off canvas roof - clearly visible in our spy photos grabbed when the Spyder pulled into a Swedish petrol station - is another obvious weight-saving tactic; expect the kerbweight to tumble somewhat from a regular 718 Boxster S or GTS.

[link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/cars-for-sale/porsche/boxster/]Browse used Porsche Boxsters for sale[/link]

[h2]When can I buy a 718 Boxster Spyder? And how much will it cost?[/h2]There's no definitive answer on either question. Judging by the state of readiness of the prototypes photographed here, we'd expect to see the Spyder unveiled in mid 2018, pointing to customer deliveries in the autumn.

It's too early to call the likely UK pricing of the Spyder. With the GTS topping out at £62k, there's clearly more headroom for this six-cylinder special to head well north of £70k.

Personally I'm not a great fan of that bulky rear diffuser but presumably it's an effective high-speed aero device.

Jeff
I turned the last one down :) and most people who wanted one got one, it's a poor seller.

ATM it looks naff the 981 Spyder had all the 718 parts any way so if the new one looks naff no point changing esp if it's £70+ £10k options.

what the 981 has is great looks from the front 3/4's

I guess the cars all about the engine and no one knows the spec yet. if it's a 4.0 but super detuned then again buying one just because it's a 4.0 seems daft.

rather add a 430 BHP tune to the 3.8

We never got one or GT4 despite buying many Porsches  on the list for 18 months for a Gt4 still not to sorry the amount that are now for sale .

Not willing to pay over list either not that rich.:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Let's see what the next Gen are like fact rather than speculation would be nice for a change hate the way it's all hush hush.

Not really open top motoring anyway freezing cold light snow again. [:(] just when we thought spring was on its way.[8D]

Why haven't the spy shot car mags posted a sound track of the new 982 Spyder? Exhaust pipe exits are no guarantee of the number of cylinders deployed.

Having said that, it's probable that a flat-6 is at the very least being tested for the 982 Spyder and GT4.

The suspense is building........

[h1]Turbocharged or all-motor? We don’t know yet, but it will be cool![/h1] [/ul] by [link=https://www.topspeed.com/authors/71636/]Ciprian Florea[/link], on March 15, 2018, 12:30 Introduced in 2016, the current-generation [link=https://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/2017-porsche-718-boxster-ar164281.html]Porsche Boxster[/link] gained a couple of major changes compared to its predecessor. While the styling and interior didn’t change much compared to the previous roadster, the new Boxster changed its name to the 718 Boxster, a tribute to a sports car from the late 1950s, and switched to turbocharged engines for the first time ever. Come 2018, and it seems that Porsche is finally working on a new version of the Boxster Spyder. First [link=https://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/2010-porsche-boxster-spyder-ar81251.html]introduced in 2009[/link] and [link=https://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/2016-porsche-boxster-spyder-ar168376.html]relaunched in 2015,[/link] the Boxster Spyder is a modern tribute to the 718 Spyder of the 1960s, and the upcoming will be the first to actually wear the iconic "718" badge next to the "Spyder" lettering.

There isn’t a lot of information to run by as of this writing, but the spyder configuration is pretty obvious in the spy shots. The soft-top roof is different toward the back, while the engine hood features the famous flying buttresses. I also spotted a few changes front and rear. They’re not massive, but they do make the Spyder a bit more aggressive. Under the hood, it should get the most powerful engine ever fitted in a Boxster, but the nameplate’s switch to turbocharging makes things a bit complicated. We should find out more later this year, but until then let’s have a closer look at the spy shots in the speculative review below.

The new 718 Boxster Spyder could break cover in the summer of 2018.

Updated 03/15/2018: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder out for a new testing session, this time during cold winter conditions.

[/link] [h3]Exterior[/h3]Aggressive body featuresNew rear spoilerFlying buttressesRevised soft-topRace-inspired rear diffuserNew exhaust pipe layout[/ul] The spy shots suggest that the upcoming Spyder is a slightly more aggressive version of the Boxster it is based on. This means that it gets all the updates that Porsche introduced for the nameplate for the 2016 model year, starting with the wider front end with a new bumper section, thinner LED daytime running lamps, and new LED headlamps. Modifications for the Spyder model seem to include a more aggressive center vent, a new splitter, and a horizontal slat delete for the side intakes. Onto the sides, the Spyder appears to be identical to the regular Boxster save for the slightly revised rear bumper vents and the new wheel design. You can also notice the already familiar Boxster design elements such as the clean door handles, the aerodynamically optimized mirror caps, and the muscular fenders. Of course, the side view changes significantly toward the back due to the flying buttresses on the engine cover, which give the car a sleeker look. The same is available for the top. While the Boxster looks similar to the Cayman when the soft-top is up, the Spyder gets a different profile.

porsche-718-boxster--3_1600x0w.jpg
[/link] [blockquote]The two-piece diffuser is decidedly more aggressive and features a new exhaust pipe layout [/blockquote]More changes are visible around back. Porsche redesigned both the taillights and the decklid for the latest Boxster, the new taillights have 3D LED technology with four-point brake lights, and a black strip with integrated "Porsche" lettering between them. The latter, however, wasn’t carried over to the Spyder. That area is now a decklid spoiler, so the stripe was removed altogether to make room for the aerodynamic element. The bumper is identical to the regular model, but the new diffuser sets the Spyder apart.

The two-piece element is decidedly more aggressive and features a new exhaust pipe layout. While the standard Boxster has a single, rectangular tip in the center, the Spyder uses two round pipes on each side of the diffuser. This is also a significant departure from the previous Spyder, which had a dual exhaust setup in the center of the bumper. The exhaust pipes are also larger, which suggests a bigger engine, likely borrowed from the 911 GT3.

[h3]Interior[/h3]Sports seatsSports steering wheel with flat bottomRadio and HVAC deleteSeveral new optionsCloth loops for the doors[/ul] [blockquote]Be on the lookout for sportier seats and a slightly smaller steering wheel with a flat bottom [/blockquote]Inside the Spyder’s cabin we should find the same features that were introduced as new with the regular the 718 Boxster. Look for the same dashboard with revised A/C vents, the updated instrument cluster, and a sportier steering wheel with new spokes and a new center section. Updates in the technology department compared to the outgoing model should include a standard Porsche Communication Management system with mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces, a 110-watt Sound Package Plus, and a navigation module with voice control. The Connect Plus module for access to a wide array of online services is optional on the Boxster, but it could be included as a standard feature on the Spyder version.

As for features that will set this model apart, be on the lookout for sportier seats and a slightly smaller steering wheel with a flat bottom. The radio and the air conditioning units will probably be removed from the standard package, but [link=https://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/index5.html]Porsche[/link] will offer them as no-cost options for customers who still want convenience features in their race-inspired sports cars. The cloth loops that replace the traditional door handles and the revised rear section for the new rooftop will further set the Spyder apart from the regular 718 Boxster.

[/link] [blockquote]The new Boxster Spyder could a turbocharged engine [/blockquote]There’s no word as to what engine Porsche will use in the new Spyder and the fact that the Boxster went turbocharged at the last update makes it that much more difficult to guess. Even the GTS model went the forced induction way, using a beefed-up version of the twin-turbo, 2.5-liter four-cylinder. This may be a hint that the Boxster Spyder will also get a pair of turbochargers, but some reports claim that the drop-top will remain naturally aspirated and use the same engine as the 911 GT3.

[blockquote]Some reports claim it will use the 4.0-liter flat-six in the 911 GT3 [/blockquote]The latter borrows its drivetrain from the GT3 Cup race car, which uses a 4.0-liter flat-six. The unit is rated at 500 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque, the same output as the old 911 GT3 RS. But don’t expect the Spyder to be this powerful. With the GTS, the most powerful Boxster available now, rated at 365 horsepower, Porsche can lower the output of the flat-six engine to around 400 horses. This would be 25 horsepower more than the previous Spyder and a solid update for a new-generation model. Some rumors claim that Porsche might even go with 430 horsepower.

[link=https://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/2019-porsche-718-boxster-spyder-ar179489/pictures.html#762973]
porsche-718-boxster--11_1600x0w.jpg
[/link] [blockquote]Depending transmission and other updates, the Spyder could hit 60 mph in as quick as 4.1 seconds [/blockquote]The Spyder would obviously become the quickest Boxster yet. The previous model needed 4.3 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standing start, so it’s safe to assume that the upcoming Spyder will achieve the benchmark in 4.2 seconds. Depending on the transmission and other updates, it could get there in as quick as 4.1 clicks. Top speed should grow to nearly 190 mph from the GTS’ already impressive 180-mph rating.

The transmission is also a mystery. The previous Spyder was a manual-only sports car, but Porsche could offer a PDK option for this one. Actually, the PDK could be only transmission, as it happened in the past. A manual would be great for purists, but the PDK model would be faster and more agile on the race track, so I guess that both options would be nice to have.

Chassis upgrades are also on the table, including a firmer sport suspension and a lowered ride height. The Spyder should also have more direct steering for the front wheels, a rear-wheel steering system for improved cornering at high speeds, and beefed-up brakes, likely borrowed from the Porsche 911 GT3.

[h3]Prices[/h3]The previous Boxster Spyder was priced from $82,100 back in 2015 and it’s safe to assume that new-generation model will fetch more than that. With the base 718 Boxster priced from $57,400, the new Spyder should fetch at least

[h3]Conclusion[/h3][link=https://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche/2019-porsche-718-boxster-spyder-ar179489/pictures.html#762965]
porsche-718-boxster--3_1600x0w.jpg
[/link] The upcoming Boxster Spyder is shrouded in mystery as of this writing, but the fact that it was spotted on public roads in prototype form confirms that the nameplate is returning after another three years of absence. And this is great news no matter how you look at it. And while it would be a bit disappointing for the Spyder to ditch the naturally aspirated engine in favor of a turbocharged unit, we’d still get one of the coolest Boxsters ever built. Turbocharging is the way to go for every manufacturer that wants to survive in the current market and purists need to understand that Porsche must move forward. And if a turbocharged engine means more power and a quicker car, I don’t see why we shouldn’t embrace it. Even if it doesn’t get a manual transmission. Where do I sign up?

Flat6 Turbo doesn't fit current cars engine bay as the Flat 4 with Turbo & extra cooling rads etc weighs more and uses every inch of space compared to the our old Flat 6's 3.4 or 3.8 versions [&:]
