Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Thank you Rob, You're very kind. I have loved the Spyder and the comments I have received about it in the 3 years that I've owned it. This has been only the 2nd Porsche in my 48 years of car driving and I am now smitten with Porsche. Unfortunately, I have got to replace it with a similar value 4 seater, so am now looking to purchase a Panamera S E-Hybrid or Panamera Turbo or GTS - Do I go with the heart and be sensible with the Hybrid, or go for the fun factor of the turbo or GTS ???????? If anyone out there fancies a swap, or mine plus a bit of cash, do please let me know. I haven't advertised my beauty yet, but will have to within the next week or two. Cheers to all, Dave

Can I ask: what is anyone hoping for with the new Spyder that the current one does not give. Is another 40BHP, -0.5 Secs 0-60 on possibly the same engine base worth the extra £10-15K when the handling and sound is IMHO already superb: other than it is 3 years younger. Most are hardly worn out at sub 10K miles!. (change on gearing perhaps would be nice).

You are absolutely right, it doesn’t make any sense for current Spyder owners to buy the new one. That way my chances of getting one are increased 😉

more steering feel

lower gears

More SUS adjusment

more MPg

new car will be far better imo, no brainer to swap as the older car you sell at overs and make money, new car will be better fetch overs and have 3 years warranty.

0-60 is pointless, but 60 to a ton will be worth the bhp gain.

Has anyone heard of a recall for the 981 Spyder gearboxes?

 
I spoke with my OPC about this last week for my 2016 car and they said:

I have checked the Porsche campaign system and currently your Spyder is not showing a campaign for the transmission replacement. Whilst this is currently released on the GT4, I am unaware that the campaign will be extended to Boxster Spyder models, however, in the event of the campaign being extended, Porsche Cars GB Ltd may contact you directly.

Well got my mate to buy the JZM one, shocked no one picked up a 5k miles as new car.

He is so pleased with it, it was like buying new :)

So much on here about the new cars and residual values of both 987 and 981 Spyder. Lets face it if you get a LOI in and get accepted, when specking an order for the 781 Spyder you will be lucky. I doubt when you place your order you will get answers to many questions. I didn't when ordering my 981. Try asking. "How many of these cars will be produced for the C16 market?" That question must be the one that will determine for future value of your new car. Where would the value be of previous Spyders be if they Porsche had made five thousand of each instead of a couple of hundred? Any investment made is two way, enjoyment of ownership and £SD. By far and away the most important the first one, enjoyment!

 
I was thinking more about the chances of getting one rather than residual values. ( As you indicate there isan inversely proportionate relationship between those two things).

If I was lucky enough to have a choice of either a Touring or a Spyder I’m really not sure which I’d go for.

 
My car was in for some service work last week and I took the opportunity speak to 'Sales' - I believe he was the New Car Manager but the fact that he did not introduce himself properly tells you all you need to know about how interested he was in me as a prospect. Said he new nothing about Spyder other than there would be less, by way of evidence he said they would only get 2 GT4s. At this point I became as disinterested as he obviously was from the start, as either he was telling the truth in which case no ordinary person such as I will get a new car or he was talking rubbish in which case my business will go elsewhere anyway.

Very odd approach in an otherwise empty showroom, and a dealership stacked out with stock much of which was recognisable from a visit 6 weeks previously. Multiple new and nearly 718s, and a plethora of 911s which seems and odd strategy given that they presumably will be hoping for people to swap out of 997/991 to 992.

Like others on here I'm quite happy with the car I have and feel no desire to jump through hoops to change to an unknown quantity that I am sure will be more powerful and faster and perhaps a bit more up to date on the inside - but none of that is a need for me. Dealers seem to prefer serial buyers of the latest toy who will give them the opportunity to retail the same or similar cars multiple times a year rather than long term owners.

I think Porsche have lost the product plot somewhat as regards the UK market - its taking them so long to get cars available for sale and when they do they are not much differentiated from the competition. This focus on limited edition specials that few can ever hope to buy (935, Speedster, GT3/2RS etc) seems very odd when they don't seem able to get even standard models through the emissions tests.

I had a Macan for the day and whilst it was smooth and efficient, the brakes were seriously poor for car with only 2k miles on it and 10-15 degrees either side of centre it felt like the steering wheel had no connection to the wheels so it seemed to constantly understeer. Could have been any premium make really - nothing distinctly Porsche about it - and I would guess a £60k vehicle given the feels and whistles on it.

I think Porsche in the UK have some interesting times ahead if this is the latest version of their best selling product.

Coincidentally the same week my partner bought a nearly new Q2 - the way 4 or 5 people in the dealership worked as a team to secure the sale and end up with a happy customer was illuminating.

 
What are the odds on there not being a 718 Spyder. Maybe the 718 swan song is Porsche plonking 1200 N/A 6c into the 718 with the option of PDK and speccing them up to sit above the current GTS which is not racing out of the showrooms. Might satisfy some latent demand.

a Spyder bodied Boxster has been doing the rounds , so w/be amazed if there wasn’t one
