Before and after

Don't you mean tacky?
only if you don't like a classic 80's tuned look to the car which is in keeping with the age of the car (but not Strosek that would be a bridge to far). I remember when everyone thought the 930 looked tacky/horrible whatever you want to say and in general was almost shameful to say you liked it. Now its looks are considerd "classic" when a few years back the mention of a whaletail on a 911 dropped the value 20%. I also remember when the countach became cringe worthy but is cool again. I think the problem the S2/951 has always had is that it falls between 2 distinct looks and periods of design. This IMHO is why so many ppl want to update the car to look like the 968 which is a much more together design.

The cup 944 turbo riding on teledials and with those smaller mirrors looks just about as together as the 944 ever could IMHO, the big upright mirrors and running strips spoil the smooth flowing lines on the S2/951 but hey it is Porsche and it was the 80's. Basically the problem is the rake of the windscreen looks odd next to such a blunt mirror shape but the 968 mirrors are too smooth in shape and too big to look perfect. If such a compromise mirror design existed I would fit them and forget about originality since it would IMO look perfect.

All Porsche models have been fiddled with regarding various bits and bobs like the turbo whale-tails on 3.2 carerra's, GT3 sill covers on standard 996's. Why should the 944 be immune to similar levels of fiddling with? OK these sill trims are not Porsche OEM but so what. As long as it looks OK then it's all fine with me. Even the 944 - 968 conversion is fine by me though not something i'd do myself. They are essentially the same cars so if you want a cheap 968 look-alike and are prepared to spend the cash on it then good luck to you I say. There was a guy on this forum who recently spent a fortune on his 996 and replaced all the necessary body panels with the 997 equivalents. He ended up having a 997 look-alike that is almost undetectable to all but the most fastidious Porsche anorak (I think only the doors in the end were the only remaining 996 body parts and they have a slighly different shape). He used all OEM parts, had the work carried out by proffesssionals who knew what they were doing and it looked stunning in anyones language.

In fact although I prefer the look of the front end of a 944 turbo/S2 I do prefer the look of the rear end of a 968, so to me the best looking 944 would be one with a 968 rear paned fitted.

In fact if I had a spare £30k or so burning a hole in my back pocket i'd love to buy a 964 and do a Ruf CTR Yellowbird replica with the 9M billet cylinder heads and a supercharged engine to get similar levels of performance as the original. Even if I could afford the original I just couldn't live with a LHD car.

Standard cars are fine by me also - what ever floats your boat. As long as these things are driven. I do object to those concours cars that spend all their lives being polished, trailered to various concours competitions and rarely see the road. That is just sad.
