Buying 964RS

To all

I have been looking at buying a 964 RS for the last 4 weeks or so. I however need plenty of assistance in finding one and asking the right questions. Also is it me or do they seem to vary quite a lot in price? Admittedly I am looking at either LHD or RHD. Also colour not a great worry to me. Which spec is best to go for? I will use it on the track ofcourse but also driving it the back roads from London to Dorset.

Can you all give me a top 10 question list please.

Much appreciated

Johannes

Beaten Laurence to this one...........

1. Buy a LHD
2. You pays your money they have ALL mostly had a repair it depends on how well done and extent, baragin cars will be for a reason unless very lucky but budget round £30k for something nice £35K for a garage Queen but if your going to do a lot of track pay accordingly these are LHD prices add about 5K for RHD/
3. Buy a basic (lightweight) most common or pay a premium for a ClubSport.
4. Have it checked out by a specialist.
5. See if the car has had serious competition use...signs of roll cage etc.
6. Check it has the original magnesium wheels.
7. Alloy bonnet.
8. Proper Recaro seats.
9. Dyno report on engine should be minimum 262 BHP.
10. History
11.Drives and makes all the right rattles.
12. Check engine and vin numbers.

all the best

Er , do you currently have all 9 of the Porsches listed , if so you must be the man that was going to buy Allan McKee's red one ? You could probably tell us what to look for ! [:D]

Well if HIJJB has the 9 Porsche listed and he gets a 964RS I know which one he will want to DRIVE don't we..........................[;)]

Hi Johannes

Talk to owners about their experiences - Judgement Day at North Weald Airfield may be an ideal opportunity. Also read what you can to make sure the car has all the rights bits as these can be expensive to replace. Definitely drive a couple to get a feel for a good one. Plenty of buyers guides out there with good tips.

Enjoy the process it is part of the fun.

While I agree with most of what Des says, I disagree with a couple of points.

1. It seems as if you are going to do a reasonable road milage. Therefore buy a RHD. Forget what some might tell you about the "pure" experience. The RHD driving position is no worse than the LHD one (both have their limitations) and the power steering is very good indeed.

2. Do not buy a Clubsport unless you are deaf and have no sences or feel. A clubsport is a superb car but not suited to regular UK road driving.

3. A roll cage isn't a sign of serious competition use, but it does suggest at least trackday use. I would suggest that if you are going to do trackdays, a roll cage is a plus.

4. The history should be from a specialist, not just a OPC.

5.It is worth waiting for the right car. Don't rush. It took me 4 months to find "the one".

Finally, look at GT Classic's stock. Paul is a straight up type of guy who everybody recommends. Might not be the cheapest around but his cars are about as good as they get.

Simon if you read my post it referred to a cage which had been removed! Disagree as to RHD but suppose that's more personal but remember pan-european market and usa buyers as well as trips to Spa/Ring also think LHD looks more authentic can't remember seeing a RHD Cup Car.........colour also is important, maritime blue, mint green, signal green very sought after followed by GP WHITE (yes it is) and then all the reds etc..........yellow very comon (although Laurence will say his is unique)

Agree Paul Mclean a good contact you should call him at GT Classics, although the GP White car has now gone.........

All the best HIJBB with your search if you wish to call me anytime numbers below........

This was not the fella that wanted mine. His missus put the brakes on for him but it may be back on again if I px one of his 9 other cars ? Let me choose from : BMW645 Cab. Aston DB9. Scooby Imprezza 400 BHP. Mitsu Evo 460 BHP. Ford Lightning. Mini Cooper S Works. Range Rover. Lotus Exige. & 1 other I cannot recall ? I may be taking in the 2003 53 reg Cooper S Works with around £20k spent on it !!!

Keep you all posted. BTW it sailed through its MOT on Thu last week

Tell us more Tat about Eric always good to know RS dealers in Europe.....

He sells used Porsches trading as Wolbert Sportscars. He started about 2 years ago, having previously worked for one of the main Audi/VAG dealers in Holland. I think his business is a 2 man partnership, but Eric is the one who does all the work. He deals in all variants of 911, and does not specialise in the RS variants, although he claims to have a special interest in them. He says he is not in direct competition with H&S, because they target the German and UK markets, whilst Wolbert is selling to the Dutch market. He sources cars from all over Europe, and currently has an ex-UK 964RS in stock (a black one from Glasgow, I think)

That's about all I know about him. He's got three 964 RSs on his website at the moment. (www.wolbert.nl)

Not cheap if my maths are right it would seem Euro prices firmer than here and approaching parity with early GT3............however they look nice cars especially the black 3.8....

Thank you all very much indeed. It is indeed 9 , well no 10 now as I have bought a 928 GTS, so RS will be no11. I think you are right, I will want to drive it lots. I have listed all you have said and hopefully looking at a couple next week. One Black and one Yellow, both LHD.

Will keep you posted , very excited , boy with new toy! Hum , Wouldn't mind a DB9!!!!

Blimey, good old Wolbert seems to have his own private economy in Holland. The Black 3.8 car is PhilRS's old car (he's now got the very rare 964 RSR factory racer). Amazing that this car may achieve £39,500 sterling equivalent in Holland, we're not that far away. Knowing what H&S sold it for earlier this year makes it even more incredible. I need an outlet in Holland.

Errr, I'm also trying to buy 964 RS and 993 RS for myself and H&S, so anyone thinking of selling their's should send me an email.

If you're ever in the area Tat it'd be good to meet up and I can take a look at your car from Holland. Cheers Paul.

Hi Paul,
Hope your well. I'd really like you to have a look over my car and give me a proper view on what it's like.

Wolbert's prices include the Dutch vehicle tax (3%, I think). This is not refundable if a car is exported, but does not need to be paid until the car is registered in Holland. So it is likely that cars he has brought into Holland (like PhilRS's) can be taken out of Holland without paying this tax.
