Buying a 944

yes, the forum search facility.

the following link will give you the results in the 944 forum:

They seem to have redone the web-site so some of the linked ads - the infamous 924 trouser snake for example - no longer show up.

you mean use the searh function to look up the shop?

i managed to bring some comments from Spetember last year. very funny...
maybe I shouldnt travel from London just to see this one
I really want to buy my 944 already but so hard to find one which really lives up to the description and is worth it...

When I needed some replacement stone guards these guys were the cheapest, I paid 20% more to buy them elsewhere rather than from this dealer.

Aftermarket rear spoiler looks naff and the side skirts could be hiding all sorts. Mileage is good, depending on owners and what history/receipts there are to back it up??

For around £9k if you wait the right car will come up. I know of a Red Turbo S which is south of London that looks a far better car and has genuine providence to back up the £75k mileage

Hi Soli,

Got your email, so replying here. [:)]

The dealer has stocked some shocking dross before, but this could still be a good car for all I know.

There's no need to travel to view the all-important bodywork: simply ask them to do the same check you would and send pictures of the insides of the sills, and you'll be able to see the condition easily. If they refuse, you've saved the trip!

you could do worse than look at this one

Wasn't that up for sale a while ago? Only because I remember the bit about the seat cloth, which isn't hard to source any more. [8|]

Not a criticism, just thought I recognised the ad.

It's been up for sale for a while - I don't know if it has sold. I went to see it last summer, nearly bought it but decided to keep my Boxster. There were a few things that I would have wanted to do
1. Re-instate the aircon - all removed to the bulkhead
2. paint wheels & calipers the right colour
3. Put a quieter exhaust on
Some people might not worry about any of these

Richard had refitted the amber indicators and lozenge wheel when I saw it

The Silver Rose market is a strange one. Some sell fast for silly money, others seem to sit for ages. I think we need to see pictures of Martin's new one? [8|]

As with all 944s, the advice has to be look for the best, with all the bills and pictures. Or spend less, but go in with your eyes open and a decent restoration fund, and do the work to your own standards.

That car (Siverose) has now sold and is now residing in the Cumbria region.
Regards the white car....................NO, buy a standrad looking car and not one that has been maxed up with daft bodykits, they are far better looking as Porsche intended, said garage seem to have "restored" and "tastefully" modified a few 944's with questionable results, they are due a visit by the taste and style Police shortly..........surely !
I would be very wary of the stick on sill extensions, there could well be a couple of grands worth of rot under there.
Sit tight and something will surface that is worth buying.

I spent a year looking for a good 924, endlessly scanning the small ads to find a good one. Needless to say Auto-Graph cars featured regularly, and I have never seen such a parade of over-priced, tarted up old dogs, described in glowing terms. I wouldn't cross the road to look at one of their cars, let alone drive from London. As others have said, search a few 924 or 944 forums, you'll soon get a measure of this lot. Avoid. []

Just been reading my 911 &PW and there is a turbo in the tried and tested section, link to the car here at maundrellandco.

Looks very nice - would have to be perfect at that price though.

Looks a nice car and in good condition. If the service is good and the belts etc. have been changed recently and the bodywork is as good as it looks it could be worth a viewing

As you're in London you could do worse than look at this one - if it's still for sale. Just South of London

Richard is a very nice chap - it's a lovely car, well looked after. It has a few mods so not quite standard. The Silver Rose interior / exterior isn't everyone's cup of tea though.

Correct Richard is a nice chap and after plenty of discussions it has now moved up North. [:D]

There are a few cosmetic jobs to be done to the car, but mechanically it has been very well looked after with plenty of paperwork to back it up.

Wheels back to Silver
Air Conditioning re installed (I have most of the bits included in the sale)
Side Door mouldings re fitted
Bailey Dump Valve removed and a re-circulating valve fitted
Club Sport Steering wheel fitted
Alpine DVD Double Din stereo removed for a standard unit
Change the exhaust system to a quieter one as the Lindsey one is a bit loud for me but surprisingly quiet inside the car.

Chris Horton says its had everything done, some sill work but he thought it a little skittish, needs new tyres and a geo. To be honest that strikes me as top money and I would expect everything spot on for it, including new tyres.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone. Very much appreciated. I am continuously talking to the guys there. He sent me a pic of the options sticker and it seems to stand up to the add. The only thing I cant figure out is the interior colour code. But the Koni suspension and the slip differential all came with the car. Outside colour also original. About those sill covering I agree they are awful. So I asked what is underneath and whether these can be removed. He said easy to remove and underneath the sills are perfect. But I still asked whether underneath is original, i.e. does it have the diamond shaped indents, and waiting for a reply. The bridge spoiler is Porsche but not 944 original. Not sure it is such a problem though. Also the wheels I dont think are a big problem. If the sills are original and the engine is good even though the car stood a bit over the last 20 years (hence the low mileage). Air conditioning doesnt work as he says that the gas is illegal these days so will cost a lot to refurbish to new standards. Not sure this is true. If anyone is aware of a good one for sale please post a link here. I drove the one at Mauldren and didnt feel like a turbo...

Hi Soli,

The oustide condition of the sills is irrelevant. There's a thick coat of stoneguard, then the paint, so the sills can easily be completely rotten inside without any signs externally.

You need to see the inside condition, which is dead easy to do as there's a huge black vent in the door pillar to get a camera in. If they refuse to do this, then you have to ask why?

understood. thanks a lot. texting them now. if we assume the sills are original and in good condition inside, what about everything else? do you see the wheels or bridge spoiler not being 944 original as issues? what about the rubber bit inserted in the gap above the doors? the de-badging on the front? no PORSCHE on back and also no rubber
