Cayman GT4: Where are we up 2 now? Déjà vu Edition

Always a possiblity though, and it would mean Porsche eating humble pie to some extent. On the other hand you could say that they've listened to the press criticiism and acted accordingly, even it's only for limited 718 Cayman/Boxster production; in which case it's hardly likely to boost 718 sales significantly. Plus there's some merit in it since they've spent a fair amount of time and effort on engine and body development and it would help amortise development costs.

It's unclear what engine capacity the cars would have - 3.8L; 4.0L? Still too many unknowns until we see the GT4/Spyder spec.

Ah! The dreaded strut tower failure which has been discussed mainly on the US forums to date where a few tracked cars have had the problem. Running the track kerbs has been suggested as the culprit there but the owner here hasn't mentioned if he's done a lot of track days.

It sounds as though the owner has had a catalogue of failures - clutch issues, exchange transmission and now this - and hasn't had great service from the Porsche Centre considering the car should still be under warranty. If the whole front section of the car has to be replaced that's going to be very expensive. A chap in my Region had an insurance claim in excess of £40k when he crunched his 991 GTS. That may not be the case here but he'll have an interesting conversation with his insurer.

Jeff that should be warranty and he should get a car while its being repaired, its a known problem, and as for a clutch at 5000 miles should be warranty as well, he has been reporting it since he bought it at 1500 miles. If what he says is correct not good customer service, I can understand the OPC saying the problem is because the car has not been used so go out and drive it, but when the clutch is shot at 5000 miles pretty poor all told.

Shows how important it is to have a good OPC and a good relationship with both sales and service.

 
Think you need to be sad enough (like me LOL) to look at the other videos with this car/driver in them. There is a pattern. I'd suggest these issues very much look to have the potential of being self-induced.

So...I just started doing that....that’s 60 minutes of my life I will never get back, but it started with their videos but ended up with Chris Harris test driving a blue GT4 - delightful.... :)

He isn't happy that a lot of viewers are pointing this out and says but its a 'track car'.

Well not really the Clubsport is a track car and if he had stayed on the 'Track' we all might have had some sympathy.

Add to that the disclosure that he has changed the front struts to a harder race set and did think to also upgrade and strengthen the strut plate with one of the kits avialable out there leaves me feeling less than sorry for him.

 
Seems to me he is asking too much of the vehicle in mainly standard trim with limited driving ability. I have always found that lessons are a good starting point.

I have never owned one of these vehicles so my question is; Can you race them straight out of the box (showroom) without so mods being done to stop them breaking on the track?

I subscribe more to the pothole theory, rather than track use for these failures.

This was posted on Twitter by Cheshire council as an example of what did not meet their criteria as a pothole.

 
718 GT4 Clubsport too fast..

"SRO Motorsports Group has made sweeping Balance of Performance adjustments to the Pirelli GT4 America Sprint grid ahead of qualifying for this weekend’s season-opening races on the streets of St. Pete. Issued in a bulletin to teams on Friday evening, six of the eight GT4 brands taking part in the event have been adjusted following the pair of practice sessions held earlier today.

The hardest hit for the second consecutive weekend is the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, which has received an additional 10kg of minimum weight.

Other cars have been given weight breaks ahead of the pair of 50-minute single-driver races. The KTM X-Bow GT4 has received a 20kg reduction, with 10kg less weight for the McLaren 570S GT4 and a 5kg break for both the BMW M4 GT4 and Panoz Avezzano GT. The Audi R8 LMS GT4, meanwhile, has been handed a 5mm reduction in the minimum front ride height, although retains the same ride height in the rear. No changes have been made to either the Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R or Ford Mustang GT4, which topped the time charts in Friday’s session by PF Racing’s Jade Buford.

It marks the second consecutive in-weekend BoP change for GT4 America, following a post-qualifying weight increase for the Porsche during last weekend’s round at Circuit of The Americas."

I have to chuckle! One of the PH juveniles is suggesting that a "properly spec'd GT4...will be £110-£115k". I'm not sure what they're smoking but a base spec CGTS is priced at £60.5k, so even a (reasonable?) 20% price hike would bring in the GT4 at around £72k. It's just a 718 with a different engine (an update of an existing design),

brakes and suspension (much from the GT3) and some bespoke plastic bits: probably a couple of grand at-cost to Porsche. And historically Porsche know that most owners will add a significant number of costly options - yet more profit..!

A £12k price gap between the GTS and GT4 also leaves plenty of room if Porsche are intending to introduce a 718-6.

So....very happy with my GT4 but, as we all do, keep looking at prices of similar cars - just out of interest! As the lowest priced OPC GT4s edged down towards £70k I wondered where it would bottom out. Then, all of a sudden today, the sub £80k cars seem to have all suddenly adjusted upwards by £2k-£5k. This says to me that the OPCs know something.........

 
Might indicate that the pricing in Car magazine wasn’t too outlandish or maybe - being cynical here - some dealers will be giving slots to people who buy the old GT4 from them and trade....there have been a lot of very high priced GT4 s on the Approved website for a long pong time.

 
It's Spring, a time when people start looking for a new toy. Limited supply = higher prices. What a surprise.!

The car locator's a mess after the upgrade, probably still at a beta development stage when odd things slip through.
