Hi Folks. I was going to do a proper introduction in a separate post as I get up to speed with what I have taken on but.... Having expressed an interest I was astonished how quickly I was appointed RS for the Cayman Register, basically over the last 72 hours. Really looking forward to the challenge.
I am based in North Yorkshire and can just about justify driving across the North York Moors to get to Sainsbury's, but I have taken the wheels off the car in order to resist the temptation! My road to Caymans was via Westfields and a Lotus Exige S2 which I enjoyed until purchasing a Cayman R (pdk) in 2014. I sold that in 2017 at 65000 miles, and got a 2015 Cayman GTS manual (aka 'the limo') which now sits at 45000, and it really hurts not to be using it.
My personal focus is road use and I would normally do at least two euro tours a year. I am retired from full time work so I am making the best use of my time. I am also blessed with a wife, Helen, who has no interest in my car fixation, but happily accepted the requirement to do 4000 miles in a Lotus over three weeks and still call it a holiday. I have enjoyed track days and hill climbing in the past and still do, but now only as a spectator. I try to get to at least one F1 race per year, Hungary, France and Austria being the last three, the main requirement being the ability to drive there. The Silverstone Classic and other venues where you can get close to the cars are big priorities, but sadly they look like being non-events this year. I enjoy the technical stuff and 'tinkering' with the car to make it mine, but I must admit to knowing nothing about detailing, although I really admire the dedication shown by those who enter and win concourse events.
Why a Cayman - well lack of weight is always good in a car, I like the handling of the mid engine layout and I prefer a roof. Coming to the Porsche brand for the quality of its engineering, fit and finish, there is no other choice. Enthusiasm for the model covers such a range, from the cheapest and, or, oldest 2.7, to the newest fully loaded GT4. The owners usually have a good story to tell and experiences to share, which is surely the essence of car club membership.
I guess my role is to represent the Cayman models within the club and support members who own them in whatever way PCGB has to offer. In doing that I hope to meet up with you when we are allowed back on the road and, in the interim, engage with you on social media, email etc. Please contact me on any Cayman / Club matters and especially if you can suggest ways in which I can do the role as effectively as possible, now and in the future.
Best wishes, John.
