Cayman Register Secretary

Kevan - did nobody tell you about the Club's Hotel California clause?

You can check out any time you like - but you can never leave [:D]

Hope all is well.

I was told by the Register Director that an appointment is imminent and that I would be told very soon, that was a couple of weeks ago, I saw Chris Sweeting at our regional meeting last night and a similar thing was said so, we'll see, ours is not the only register in the situation of seeking a replacement and previously there was usually a member who was deemed suitable for the role and if they accepted they were it. But now there is a procedure, which hadn't been written and so it has meant that someone had to write one. This has caused a delay and I have told the club that as it is now more than six months since I tendered my resignation I now count it as complete. My next notice just submitted to PP will be my last and I will return to being a member. In my view the process has taken too long.

Kevan - all the very best for the future, looking forward to meeting you at Cayman events in the future!

Cheers - Tony

Kevan,

Once again, many thanks for sticking it out for an (unacceptably) long time. With luck we'll be discovering who is the new RS quite soon.

Best wishes,

Jeff

That strikers me as a little weird...I was under the Impression that there was more than one candidate put forward a pitch for the role....does this imply that the RD, Board, selection committee make a decision based upon a single submission? I’d assumed if there was more than one candidate then members of the register would vote in an election?

Now there's a novel idea...I guess historically there is rarely much competition for RS and RO positions.

An election would be novel, provided there were enough applicants to choose from. I'm not convinced that the board is necessarily the best at choosing replacements. I put forward a keen, willing and able current Cayman owner who lives about twenty odd miles away from me allowing any additional assistance easy to attend but they wanted a procedure which hadn't been written!

As for the suggestion of a committee, I always think of the Camel ( a horse designed by a committee ) and some government projects that I had an insight into during my working life! Unless each of a committee have set zones of operation they tend to cover some things twice or more and totally miss something vital!

I did suggest to the previous Register Director that registers did need to have a regional connection with an RS for an area covering several regions and so being more able to raise awareness and enthusiasm by being recognised as being from each group of regions. Something on the line of Scotland, North covering say Lancashire, Cumbria and the North East, coming down the country and allowing regional RS's to attend occasional regional meets but I was just told that they are trying to reduce the number of registers! Given the number of 911 registers....

And lastly, Rob, Hotel California haunts me! :ROFLMAO:

I have notified the editor of PP and the RD that I have submitted my last entry in the role of RS for PP, hopefully they will have someone to pick up the strings.

Just to reinstate this thread. I thought that I'd just let everyone know that I've once again emailed Dave Carnaffin for an update on the appointment.

I last received an email from him on 10th December - more than 4-months ago! - in which he said that he was aiming to meet up with Steve Gillings before Christmas and that he was hoping to get all the vacant Registers filled within the next month or so, and I'm hopeful that my message will produce a (positive?) response.

Jeff

Jeff,

I emailed both gentlemen on April 16:

“Chaps,

Can you give an update on the likely date for appointment of a Cayman RS and where in the process you are?“ an answer there was none, as yet.... Ralph

Maybe the powers above have made the process of appointing a new RS to difficult

With strict vetting more like an interview for a job process .

Why not just appoint someone willing to do the job on a 6 month trial for both parties. Surely its the job of the Register Directors to pick a candidate would have saved nearly 8 months procrastinating.

Only my opinion. [:D]

Ralph,

That's good to know, so my message today will be a timely reminder ... maybe?!

I know Steve well through R24, and if I don't get a timely response from Dave C will contact him directly to see if I can extract any information.

Jeff

This whole sorry process beggars belief!

The RD must appoint as RS now and stop this wasteful and silly procrastination. The board needs to get a grip.

It didn't take this long to appoint a new Prime Minister FFS !!

Here's an update that I shared this evening with those on the Cayman Register Zoom video call.

I managed to contact Steve Gillings who very kindly got back to me quickly with the news that there were only a very small number of people who came forward for the RS position. However, offers were made but unfortunately the individuals subsequently realised they could not afford the time required.

He also added that with the current situation, positioning and identifying a successor is naturally more difficult. Apparently candidates would normally be required to attend Cornbury House, which as you can imagine is not feasible, although I would have thought that a video call or even a telephone call would suffice in these circumstances.

Finally, he indicated that things are continuing to go on in the background and further information relating to the vacant registers should follow in the near future.

I should add that he gratefully acknowledged both Kevan's part in supporting the Register in the interim period as well as Ralph's caretaking role with the Forum, Porsche Post and Zoom meetings.

So there we have it - back to square-one.! Maybe Kevan's original recommendation, Helen Goff, would still be interested?

Jeff

Jeff

If Helen had just been given the roll rather than all the Red tape she might now be in the roll.

As mentioned before 6 months trial for both parties see if things are working out.

My thoughts entirely too Cliff.

Unfortunately we are where we are, and it looks as though we could be in for yet another lengthy period before someone is in place if the current procedures are followed unless something along the lines you suggest is adopted. And that assumes someone is willing to come forward now to fill the gap.

Jeff

Agree Jeff.

I think this fiasco might have put a lot of candidates off coming forward with all the politics and red tape, just don't see why its so difficult appointing someone.

We live in hope maybe one day Jeff. [;)]

Coming new to this issue, it seems to me that anyone thinking of volunteering might now be put off by the procrastination that has gone on and fearful of 'politics' in the background. What's the catch?

What is expected of a register secretary?

- Hub for communication - primarily PP, FaceBook, forums etc.

- Promotion of events, enabling Cayman owners to get together, share ownership experiences, how they use their cars...

- Promotion of the Cayman model within the Porsche community

I guess there is probably a long and wordy description written in a policies manual somewhere but does that about cover it as a starter?

Just realised, Cliff covered my point with his point earlier today. I pressed 'send' before I had read it.
