Dakota v River House

John H

New member
Glad to hear that everyone who went to the dakota had a good evening, ditto an excellent evening was had at the River House. The bummer is I'd like to go to both ... so why do we have to hold them on the same evening? Can we get these a week or a fortnight out of phase, then we can all enjoy both!

Watcha all think?

[&:]

John, do you ACTUALLY want to know what I think?

Ok, Apparently, for the last 15 years, it has been a well known fact that the first
Tuesday of each month, the PCGB will be at The Sherbrooke. No need really to advertise that. Ditto the "east" meet being the first Thursday in each month formerly at the Hawes, and now at Dakota. Its a well established routine which works and didnt need repairing.

Suddenly, both are cancelled and we're being told to go to Stirling's Riverhouse. Granted that Stirling is very convenient, (for me and our RO) and the Riverhouse is an ok venue. The introduction of "talks" and the like, whilst not to everyones ideal is a great idea. But EVERY month? I'm drained at the thought!!

So why doesn't Alan have these talks on another night and leave the routine as it stands?

Perhaps a bit of consultation wouldn't go amiss here?

Ok, I'm climbing back down the ladder that got me on my high horse!

I'm new to the club (or at least to coming along to the Scotland meets), so don't all shoot me at once.

I think everyone is right on this.

Alan has gone a long way towards fixing the fact that some members were not coming along because the meetings were not event based (I also like meeting for a meal/drink/chat, but I don't know people yet so I'd prefer to go to something focused around an event).

The West and East meetings are well established in the diaries of those people who know each other well and meet up for a chat, so these will continue.

Therefore my vote would be for a change of day for the River House meetings, so we can have "events" most months (I'd like this please) and so I can go to both (once I know some of you).

And lets not shoot Alan either. He has stepped in to be RO and is being positive about it.

IMHO!

I have to agree with AK and Mark.

In my opinio, it would've made more sense to have these 'organised talks' on a different day rather than disrupting the regular east/west meeting nights. That way, all the eaters and drinkers would be happy to have our usual sociallising evening, and all the petrolheads woud be happy to go along and listen to other 'car enthusiasts' for want of a better word, on a different night. I'm sure most of us are allowed out more than once a month, and I for one would like to have attended both but, there is now a split.

Alan/Ash as RO and ARO, please could this be taken on board before eventually there is a revolt and a bigger breakaway group forms??

It is a pity the groups are being torn in all directions when this situation could have been easily resolved with an email or a thread on the forum asking ..............
'what would you think if the regular meetings were changed to ............???'
I understand that there was a bit in the Porsche Post, but, surely it's a lot easier to drum up a response via this forum or email.

I'm climbing down from my even longer ladder off my even higher horse!!![;)]

The best place to have one of these discussions would be in person at one of the events Alan has planned. That's because he doesn't use the forum etc. It's either that or Ash has to pass messages back and forth.

Struth, talk about making a mountain out of a molehill []

We have a formal meeting in Stirling, and continue the informal ones in the East and West, only not on the same nights.
Jeez ... how hard can that be?

(Beginning to wish I'd kept my mouth shut! [8|])

All,

Glad you had a good time last night (whether Queensferry or Riverside). Thanks to Peter and his gang for coming along.

First of all, credit to Tony for noticing that the RO doesn't use the forum. As your 'representative', being neutral and a relative Club amateur, I need to clarify some issues:

1. The forum is not the official source of information for members (indeed some people seem to use whatever language they seem fit here, whether they are members or not). The regular members might use it frequently but there are many others that don't (including ones that have started coming to the events)
From the recent minutes of the PCGB conference in Cornbury House, it was mentioned that from now on, the magazine and the website will be the two sources to use. I appreciate the latter is still not fully operational - and I have expressed my utter discontent about this to the RO (IT still working on this)- but the Club does not view favourably on Organisers that run it by forum because not all members benefit and contribute. So,if you want something addressed all requests/suggestions by email or phone please (since posts on the forum can be made by non-members as well, for which we don't represent)

2. In regards to Riverside vs Dakota, I think expectations are different in each case. The new venue being an event that is trying to attract many more members and offer variety and accommodation to the whole club.
After having attended one of the meetings at the Dakota, I will be the first to say that it is a pleasant environment and interaction between the (regular) members there was good. As a matter of fact, the venue was more convenient for myself (15 mins from home) but (without having to justify entirely),
(a) The club did advertise and asks suggestions for venues but we never got a structured and forthcoming answer back
(b) most other regions have one common venue, so we decided to switch to one central place to avoid segregation (Close to Mr Seadon it might be but certainly not next door for me...)
(c) keeping this current set-up was not viewed as the best way to bring more people to join, as Mark mentioned above, people find it easier to come to an event than being an uneasy stranger to a group of people who all know each other at a table.

3.As for your views on continuing to have meetings AND Speakers, I see no reasons why this cannot be done on seperate days but please don't hold me to this.
The Riverside is booked for the first Thursday for the next few months, so you will realise that this will not happen imminently.
Indeed, before booking the Riverside, we were considering having meetings in all local counties/councils of the Region but found this was too unbalanced. Though, I believe for the winter months, we will revert back to the previous schedule anyway.

I fully appreciate that a routine (the two places each month) was changed but hopefully you'll be a bit more lenient now on your comments and judgments. Me,as well as Alan, are trying to build this region further so little time please (and thanks to all new people joining in once again). We are here to assist and help ALL members enjoy and will not default on that.

Lastly and without sounding like a boring and formal user, my views here are personal, non-official and don't reflect that of others or the RO's (he'd bite my head off...).
I am all new to this role and your support is required and appreciated if we want to have a popular and dynamic region!

Thank you and no slagging - I'm being a mediator here not anyone's lawyer! I will not enter into a heated debate.

Best Regards,

Ash

Personally I think Alan and Ash are doing an excellent job. Region 1 has a lot more activities going at present than it has for a long time. I attended my first club night for a long time last night and found it to be more like I had always thought a club night should be. A bit of entertainment, well done Peter for organising that (by the way, I think your daughter showed excellent restraint considering the heckling from the fat old man) and a good Q & A on Porsches.

No disrespect intended to any of the fine people I met in the Hawes when I went to club nights previously but if I wanted to have a few drinks and a blether I would go to my local "" I don't need to worry about driving home that way. I really don't see why we need to have separate "event" nights and social nights. Surely we can have an organised event of some description that ends at half nine or ten with a bit of socialising before and after?

I also have to say that I think deliberately organising an "alternative club night" to coincide with the official one was incredibly churlish and can only be bad for the future of R1.

I don't think anyone is denying that Alan has really upped his game and organising more events and the like. What many of us are simply asking for, is, as paying members, that we are consulted on these decisions. Every other club/organisation would do this.

As Kim has said, breakaway groups are likely to form...fast.

So Ash, could we please have some member consultation? Thats all we're asking for.

Oh, and Dakota is also booked for June 5th. Usual suspects will be there.

Clyde

As has been mentioned more than once on this Forum The "new" nights were organised with virtually no discussion with those going to "established" nights

Though, credit where credit is due in trying something new but remember there are established meets to consider

Well I clearly wasted my breath starting this thread ... can I delete it?

John I fail to see how you can say that. You asked for opinions and thats what we're giving. The crux of all this appears to be that no one is objecting to the "usual" nights happening nor the "new" events, but why cant they be separate and why was there no real member consultation.

Interesting and particularly offensive comment as during my time as regional organsier we had a minimum of 2 events per month during the summer months and an average of 3 per month - while Brian was RO he has something on pretty much every weekend during the summer. How many of these did you support?

Hear hear!

If clyde had bothered to show up for any club event in the past couple of years we might be inclined to take his view a bit more seriously.

Alan could have gone for the Wed. night at Stirling and not caused all these problems.

He is hopefully only temp R1 organiser. Don't know what we would do without being organised?

That's right meet up as usual. When we like and where we like.

It up to the individual what they want to do, Stirling, Glasgow or Edinburgh. Live and let live.

There have been more problems than I can remember in the last 2 months than the last 15 years.

Obviously have been watching this thread for a few days and Hoping common sense would prevail but alas NO..

Kim it is the PORSCHE club (Petrolheads Heaven) not an Eater/Drinkers Social Evening..................CLUB..

I for one am happy to do anything the club is arranging, have actively been involved in booking tables previously
at the Hawes etc..

Im Sorry Kim if you feel like im singleing (spelling) you out, that is not my intention but im afraid the way i read
your post seems to miss out on the fact that this is in Fact a Car club.

I HAVE GOT TO AGREE WITH CLYDE ON THIS ONE...............SO AS EVERYONE IS CLEAR......

For a new member or some one who comes to a Club night infrequently , joining a table with a group friends eating who meet frequently must be quite Daunting /Intimidating.

I for one think the club night should follow the format that has just started as it promotes more interest in the Club
and will hopefully swell the ranks and interest new members in coming along.

I also really enjoy the social aspects of the Club and the social nights, i dont see any reason to stop them BUT
having them on the Official Club night is not the right thing to do.

I agree that there should have been consultation with the Membership with regards to moving the
Club night. I know there were Questions asked in Porsche Post regards suggestions on other Locations
to Suit a Club night for Whole of region One not just East/West. Dont know if the RO got any replys..

I am first to agree that the implimentation of this has been badly managed,But I know that the intent is good
and the RO is just trying make the club Better for everyone as a whole..

I dont think arranging Nights that coincide with The Official Club night is the Correct Thing to do.......

Like John i would like to do Both Nights (Club Night and Social Nights) If these nights are going to end up
being the Same nights Im afraid i Have no alternative but to do the Official Club night... As i feel that is the
correct thing to do for the betterment of the Club.

Best Regards
Big Al
