Hey Simon,
Car looks good in the pics, but I know you received the car back to give it a shake down... so how is the car? Up to your expectations? We need feedback!!!

Hi ade sorry I dashed off when you showed up at the ace but I was feeling flu'y

As for a shakedown a few squeaks and rattles, I've been keeping a to fix list;
1. Engine running after ignition off - solved by backing carb stops off 1/4 turn
2. Starter stuck on me had to roll it and dump the clutch to free it
3. C/lock completely stopped working cant lock the car (good thing it was open)
4. Metallic rasp at 5000rpm (on the interior gauge) didn't push it past this point (repeatable)
5. One of the driver's side crotch belts isn't attached to anything can't find any buckle
6. Windscreen washers not working on properly, one works after 5sec's
7. Wind whistle from driver's door 11'o clock position
8. Loose bolts in the engine bay (hoping they are dropped ones)
9. Pedal height off acc pedal way way down compared to brake and clutch
10. Head light stayed on with button set to off (but only happened once)
11. Gear selection seems temperamental at times need a double de-clutch (just the 915 perhaps)
12. Rear RH indicator bulb not working, will try to get one
13. XXXXX
14. 2nd Key isn't for my car (Paul McLean mixed them up?)
15. Hazard light switch not mounted (hidden in a tangle of wires under dash)
16. Speakers foul cross brace on cage
17. Right vent smashed
18. Interior lights don't work.
19. Front indicator housing screw not attached to anything
20. Clutch engages too low i.e. just off the floor board
21. Bake bias off front locks up to easy, cant lock back at all.
22. Passenger mirror just decoration, will try to adjust it.
23. Also the shoulder belts haven't been mounted correctly.

I'm sure nick will put all the things right so not to worried. Plus there's a few things nick already knows about, like having to take out the carpets and chop the throttle stop off to get full throttle, wheels that didn't fit, bits of trim etc

n.b. 13 on the list has been removed for security reasons

Whoa - that's some list! [] I'm amazed Nick did not sort the items above before handing the car over as I would have otherwise rejected the car [&:]. Given how long the project has taken until now, I hope [am sure] Nick will make sure they are put right before signing off his workmanship.

Good luck and keep us posted - she sounded epic when you fired her up, and it'll be great to see her on track! [:)]

I assume Nick gave you the car to try out rather than as the finished article. I finally made it down to ACE last night but unfortunately missed you both as too late. I am sure I'll get to see the yellow peril at some point though.

Regarding the 915 box. A good one is like butter so I suspect the difficulty in changing gear is related to the fact the clutch engages near the floorboard.

Ian.

I am shocked that Simon has posted his list of problems here on a public forum without even calling me or letting me see the list first. I think we can resolve these minor problems on what was a major build without Simon feeling the need to use the pressure of public airing of his fustrations. I am sure he wouldn't be pleased if his customers felt the need to air their snagging list in public without giving him a chance to put things right. Consequently I shall try and resolve these alledged problems in private rather than here. Ian is right in that the car is getting a shakedown before being rolling road tested.

Posting such a list on here does look more than a little naive....This is quite an extensive conversion and having rebuilt a few classics myself over the years, I am more than aware that you need to spend more time on the final fettling than you ever expected...SMTK, the car looks great, get a few miles on it to see how things go, the shakedown is a very important part of the process.

So the car isn't completely finished although it was returned to Simon and it needs a 'shakedown', but is it normal for such basic things to not work on a car during the shakedown process... and be discovered by the customer on public roads? I would have thought there are issues of safety here... not that a bit of trim is missing or something.

Don't you mean you "will resolve" [:D]

Anyway I thought this was all supposed to ready for the 30th November for that Brands Hatch Track Day some of us attended, I'm surprised that it still isn't finished !

I shall try and resolve these alledged problems in private rather than here
This refers to my attempt to resolve the issues in private, rather my ability to resolve the issues. The car would have been ready in plenty of time for Brands Hatch had Simon not decided to add to the specification late in the build. Also I wish to clarify that the mysterious item 13 is not a safety item.

I suggest as Nick says both Simon and Nick resolve this out of the public eye....it will do neither of you any good debating in public and eveyone's 'mates' stay out of it!

Just my 2peneth

Didn't mean to start any slanging match at all. I merely asked Simon for his feedback since we were told he picked up the car and had a nice series of photos. There was clearly a lot of interest in this car by several here (and I'm sure by those who didn't post) so it's nice to hear feedback - both good and bad - about the car, conversion, and process Simon is going through to get to the finished product. It's a shame the car isn't quite up to his expectations first time around, but we shouldn't be afraid to discuss it openly in the same way he first solicited advice from people here. There are frequently teething issues to be expected and I guess we would have been surprised to hear (although would have loved to have heard) that it was perfect out-of-the-box. Nick is a professional guy entrusted with a major project that we were all following, and he should not take feedback as an attack/public pressure: I'm sure he probably wants it to be perfect as much as Simon does. Anyways, looking forward to the next installment. :)

Guys it may be a mark of my incompetence but its taken 2 years to iron out some of the things on my '72 s and achieve originality, after the bulk of the work appeared done ....get real this cars been back to zero ......a thousand pieces scattered on the floor[ like mine] but then to add to the fun its been heavily modified, by any yardstick .....REAL WORLD eh! NOTHING LIKE THIS COMES OUT PERFECT FIRST TIME ......PROOF OF THE JOB IS EXPERIENCE TO KNOW WHAT NEEDS DOING then having the patience to follow through , taking time and care .......then just for luck doing it again when something is nt as it was after some miles !!!!!!!

I have 5 old cars. None of them is ever finished and I have grown tired of writing lists to myself with things that should have been done ages before I went to the pub. I had thought of taking out a High court injunction to prevent me from going to work on a Monday morning without re-doing the corner weights on the 2.7. The trouble was that the lawyers cost more than twin plug heads and slide throttles.

I had a sad experience with a specialist who did not do what I would have wanted from the job and it ended a friendship of long standing. I will not name him now and have still recommended him to others but I do think that posting the list of snags without discussing it with the other party would appear to be appear be bad manners. I am sure that Nick M will accept an apology and that you can continue to work together.

I do think that the car looks great and look forward to seeing it wearing out the tarmac.

Sorry Alex, but I totally disagree. Why on earth should an apology be made to Nick?

I think if Simon were rebuilding it himself or Nick were doing it as a favour for Simon, then yeah I don't think any of us would be too fussed about the WIP of his car and the project would be long and expectedly arduous.

But Simon is not doing this himself, and neither is Nick doing it as a favour for Simon.

Isn't Early911 a professional specialist company being paid very good money over a long period of time to deliver a sorted product that they are experts in?

I think it's wholly reasonable for Simon to expect a properly working and finished product... just as any of us would if we walked into Porsche (or any dealer) to buy a car, or if we walked into our favourite Porsche Indy for a service.

Let's separate personal relationships with individuals from what should be a properly working finished product that a professional business is being paid for.
