Engine & gearbox removed yesterday for a good inspection, the gearbox removal found a non standard clutch from Sachs Race Engineering, the thrust bearing requires replacing, other than that all good,
The lower spark plug leads where heat is prevalent has took its toll and a full set is required, the seals between the varioram and the intakes on the heads are split where the retaining clips have cut into the rubber,
so much that the intake tubes are slightly out of shape, so new seals and new intake tubes are required, Question..... the heads have been ported and polished so much that the bore is around 2mm larger than the intake tubes
bolted to the head where the intake manifold of the varioram clamps to, does anybody know of an intake tube that is slightly bigger in diameter than the standard 993 rs ?

standard 993 rs on the left & non standard on the right, independants think it may be 996 cup?
 
Motorsport clutch often used , dont see any thing wrong using either of those and the bearings the cheapest bit!

Leads very normal prob IMO , I THINK UR CAR WAS 'TUNED /REBUILT ' IN SWITZERLAND ts will know for suRE

U may care to give Matt at Fearnsport a ring...hes done quite a lot of work on kit with non standard sizes !

Cheers Vic, the thrust bearing should be ok to source, its larger intake trumpets between varioram and heads I could do with, yes the rs is from Switzerland, all engine work done at FMT Fahrwerk und motorentechnik, now the gearbox is out the last owner peter blandow, a swiss dentist has his name on the starter motor !!

ported and polished heads, and the crushed intake tube due to overtightened jubilee clip, all the intake tubes are being replaced.
 
of course if u had a cup car none of that heavy Variram intake etc !

Seriously speak to Matt he may have an answer ..............
 
Cheers Vic, I would consider the cup plastic intake manifold with the bulk head facing air intake HOWEVER have you priced one up ? £££££££££££££££££££££££££££ ouch
 
Another item I am considering is to go back to the standard headers, Im currently using the cargraphic headers with heat exchangers however Ive heard that the standard headers may be a better option as no power gain with the cargraphics?
I would still like to use the 100 race cats but without checking the system and flanges ( gilet or bischoff ) not sure whats compatible, was even considering removing the plastic air box and motor on the left and fitting the clubsport bypass tube,
this would mean no heating system and a constant feed of low pressure hot air, perhaps clubsport or vic could comment assuming the cup and clubsport have the same set up ?
 
Steve, it looks like an interesting project....if anyone knows about the availability of oversize inlets, surely 9M is the man to ask?

With respect to the heating system, I obviously have the CS bypass tube, but the slight difference is that mine has option 573, factory fitted a/c, so I appear to have the full range of temperatures and blowers available...much as my previous RS M002 to be fair.

So why not just change the belt, it a £6 part? And whilst at it replace the rotor arms as well, mine were about £30 the pair? Much cheaper than a new dizzy!!

its an exchange distributor with not just belt but everything that moves and wears like seals and bearings, new caps etc etc, you could of course buy all the parts, strip down, rebuild, for me it was a simple exchange with little labour costs added.
 
Makes sense, Steve. Great to see the photos of what your having done. I assume you're having new tin ware? I did mine a couple of years ago on my 964 RS and it looked great, but the quality of the Porsche parts was poor so you'll need to keep on top of it if you want to avoid it rusting.

Damen all the tin ware being sent away for powder coating, with cooling fan and housing, all bolts re plated etc, only thing I cant do unlike the 964 is the fuel rails, the 64 has a union where you can unbolt the crossover pipe where as the 93 is a crimped hose which cant be dropped into an acid bath
may be able to suspend the rails in the bath and keep the fuel hose out but will have to ask the question.

To be fair I have always found the 993 a/c and ventilation system crude compared to other cars with climate, but then again coming from earlier air cooled cars, I can hardly complain!

I tend to have the a/c on to cool and also to clear the windscreen, yet rarely use the heat, although it works...I really can't see much difference between how I used ventilation/heating in the M002/003 cars.

I suppose you save some weight by removing the blower motor and importantly a/c is there to clear the screen if required.
 
Steve i ve taken a lot of stick for arriving at Oulton every year looking a bit blue with cold ...........................all the olsd arguments weight saving [ quite a lot ] against feeling cool on track days so performing better for aircon ...................but dont ditch the heat unless u feel desperate need ..................its just so cold when u least expect and demisting screen ....forget it !
