I sorry to hear that the new beastie is proving troublesome Helen.

Just think how nice it will be after the rebuild though.

While I admire the sentiment it will cost several limbs more than necessary to use an OPC.

As an example just this very day I have ordered rings and bearings for my Turbo. They are coming from Bert and cost ÂŁ19 per piston for rings, ÂŁ35 or so for big ends and ÂŁ80-odd for main bearings. I forget what the OPC quoted now but it was of the order of ÂŁ100 per piston or more, ÂŁ270 for main bearings and a similarly huge mark-up for big ends. I'm also paying something like ÂŁ25/hr to have my engine rebuilt by an ex-OPC technician (less then 2 years out of the OPC) who trained on 944's when they were current. I still expect the total bill to exceed ÂŁ2,000.

Good luck with it though.

If it's not too painful to recount...... what happened to it? []
(Not seen any post re failure)

well, since i bought it a just after xmas, its always been a bit rattly when cold but after a couple of miles it cleared and ran very well.so i ignored it.

took it for a service/MOT which it passed with flying colours. but when i took it home the rattle was worse than before and didn't go away. guess it could be a change of oil.

anyway i took it in to be investigated and the noise seems to be coming from the middle of the engine. but the only way to find it is to take it all apart. which is what is happening at the moment. im in no hurry to get the car back, so zentrum are fitting it in between other jobs. thus hopefully saving me some money.

i know its going to be worth it in the long run its just bad timing and means my 912s going to have to wait longer than planned for restoration work. and the 944s not going to get the new design 90s i ordered [&o]

Well I guess it's better than a failure and waiting to find out what's mashed up inside. []

On the upside - it'll be great when it's done. Are you overhauling the camtrain as well?

[;)]Look on the bright side as a 4 Porsche Car family you still have a fab 2004 "S" to play with whilst the old girls get fixed up if somewhat slower than expected [;)]

i've just told him to do everything that need doing to get the car running like it should.

its gong to hurt but what the hell. its a great car and one we plan to keep for a while.

Terrible news Helen [:(]

Lets hope it's something 'relatively minor' once they take it apart and see whats causing the rattle.

Well you couldn't have left it in better hands. I take mine to Zentrum. Mike is a top bloke and never get's tired of talking to you about your car. Good luck with the rebuild.

Oooops, for some reason I thought Zentrum was the OPC.

So did I!! Something to do with the fact that that is what they are called in Germany. i.e. Porsche Zentrum Augsburg; Porsche Zentrum Berlin etc, like Porsche Centre Reading, Porsche Centre Chiswick, all lost under the same corporate naming -what is wrong with 'AFN' and 'Dick Lovett' etc......

Helen -it's a quote from Kurt Vonnegut, sci-fi writer. When I saw it I thought, yeh, just about sums it up in the scheme of things for those of us who don't take life too seriously.... [:D]

And far too many people do.....[&o]

Another thumbs up for Mike. Very impressed with Zentrum when I got my 12k service done there. No sucking of teeth, get all your belts and your chains and your water pump etc done every 5k like other garages seem to be.

Hope the rebuild works out well.
