ORIGINAL: Helen Goff

[&:] my cars gone into Zentrum Nottingham for a re-build to be honest we wondered if it was worth it as its going to use all the money we had put aside for the 912 restoration project.
but, have to admit we have becme quite attached to the red beast so have given Mike the go ahead............gulp!!

well it would have broken my heart to see the car pulled to bits for scrap.[]

Hi Helen,

Any news on the engine re-build???

Cheers

Hi Tim,

Hi there,

What was the verdict?

Cheers

It was still there last weekend when I picked up my 968 CS with newly fitted M030 front struts, dampers, big red callipers and brakes...oh and fantastic painted cups and new Goodyear F1s.

Have to say they are top blokes and have done a great job - real enthusiasts.

It was actually really nice for Mike to show me around Helens engine bay and the mess the engine is in...not so painful when its not your car!!!!!!!!!!!

It will be worth it when its finished...shouldnt be long now Helen...

Why waste all that money rebuilding a boring straight four engine when for the same money you could lob in a 325BHP Chevy V8 and have a proper sports car?

No, I just got back from Las Vegas where I visited the Renegade Hybrid workshops to check out the conversion in the flesh. I'm writing it up for Porsche Post or a non PCGB publication if PP feel its not suitable. They look good and sound unbelievable.

you could lob in a 325BHP Chevy V8

ERRRRRRRRRRRRR why?

You can tune the original to that and I bet the engines heavier so unsettles the cars neutral balance so to what gain? (except torque perhaps)

Helen has an S2, so tuning it to that level would be quite a feat. [;)]

The V8 conversions look rather bleddy good actually and there isn't a big weight penalty. Obviously no quicker than a turbo tuned to that level, but theoretically much better throttle response.

Noise & exclusivity vs originality. I'd guess the former has a cost facator re insurance. No idea what it would do to residuals....... I would usually assume something like this would hammer the resale value, but these conversions are tried & tested and a lack of 6 or more cylinders has turned off many potential buyers in the past.

Would save me personally making v8 noises when alone in the car too [:D] [&:]

Simon - you are obviously persuing this seriously. Please keep us posted. [8D]

I'm not knocking the V8 conversion as I don't know enough about it and I expect I'd love the noise (although I'm really a six cylinder fan at heart) but you can tune an S2 to 350bhp very easily - the Ninemeister supercharger kit does it in one go. As you say though mik it's even easier to get a Turbo to 325bhp, although finding a lot more than that starts to need more work. I guess the V8 at 325 is still lazy and you can probably take it to 500+ bhp pretty easily.

Yes, I'm not disputing for one moment that Turbo and non turbo motors can give great power but I'm pursuing power and character. A straight four will always be a straight four and thus lacking in soul. A V8 only minimally changes the weight distribution (less than 5%). And as for residual values, what residual values? If you take a £5k car and put a V8 in it, you'll never recoup your investment and thus who cares if the 'value' of the car drops to £3k? It's all about creating something with unique appeal. Anyway, keep an eye out for my article. Coming soon, but not sure where yet.

Lok forward to hearing all about it (and hopefully seing it running!) will you be fitting turbo brakes/suspension?

haven't got the 944S2 for speed. im not into track days (haven't got anough spare cash for it.)if i was i'd get a 924 as a bodyshell for a lot less money.Im building up a small collection of original Porsche motors.. so no mods or extras that shouldn't be there. might have to think about stripping out the CD muli player and getting an original cassett player re-installed..

For GARAGE read TARDIS, as in time machine where time stands still (just like the mechanics while they read the paper)
