Nobody expects the Oli Inquisition. His main weapon is surprise and an undying dedication to 944's- Damn! His two main weapons are surprise, an undying dedication to 944's and an unquestionable grasp of the English language. Buttocks! His three main weapons are.....................and now for something completely different.

My favourite bit of my 944 is it has all of the advantages of being a Porsche but none of the stigma. [8|]

AAAAAAAHHHHH!!

These type of threads never help, there is also the Picture Post one"¦.You see, I'm having a constant battle with myself, a battle that has been going on for a long time.

On the one hand there is the longing desire to own a Porsche, which isn't helped by the daily perusal of the 944 classifieds and this 944 forum, amongst many, many others. There's this desire to know what it's actually like to own and experience one of these cars, and understand and enjoy everything that you've all written in this thread - the handling, the performance, looking in that side mirror, the little touches"¦...

...However"¦"¦.on the other the hand, this desire is constantly arguing with the sensible side - the doom laden, media driven credit predicament, mustn't spend any of the savings as you never know when you'll lose your job type argument.

Offering my suggestion for the one favourite bit, in my non-owner predicament, would probably be it's the affordability of a 944 which gets you into Porsche ownership"¦"¦..no it doesn't, these are 20 year old cars and they're not affordable"¦...yes, but it's a fulfilling a childhood dream"¦"¦.no it's"¦..

Leave me to continue arguing to myself, but I love reading these things, thanks Oli.

Duncan, by the looks of things you are as mad as the rest of us so will fit in perfectly when the time comes...[;)][:D]

If Oli will forgive my earlier flippant post then mine has to be..........

all round capability:

It's why my only cars have been 944's for the past 10 years now [:)]

Tut tut, and you have a van parked next to the S2 with your name written on it.

Is this your way of saying to Oli, here this is all an S2 is good for [:D]

....I have to agree though I used my S2 3 times to move house, has always amazed me how much can be squeezed into one of these cars.

No, he's just using his preferred vehicle!

(That's the case, isn't it Mr Smith? [>:] )

I've been pondering this question for the last few days and agree completely with Paul. There's no other car I can think of that has the range of capabilities that a 944 has - Track day on Saturday, Sainsburys shopping on Sunday, and a 400 mile motorway trip on Monday. I keep wondering whether there's anything I could replace it with, but can't come up with a decent answer.

I have been struggling to find one specific bit I liked better than the others, but I may say the driving position is absolutely perfect for how I'm shaped and I'm yet to seat in a car that will make me feel more "at home".
Seating on the passenger side from time to time is also very enjoyable, but that's probably because passenger's seats have usually been far less used than driver's seats [:)]

The oval-type dashboard is in my opinion also absolutely perfect, even if you can't see every needle/switches (but that would rather be caused by the steering wheel). I have never seen another dashboard that has aged as well.

Trouble is the local recylcling centre (can't call them tips anymore) only allow vans to visit once per month and when it's covered with great big brightly coloured sign writing they tend to spot you and warn you off even though its pretty obvious I am not a Gardener disposing of trade waste [8|]

I was much the same, to the point of driving myself a bit loopy; the only solution was to save up a modest amount of cash and buy a Lux. :) Surely your mental well-being is worth a couple of grand?

Just gone for a drive with the roof off, nice for cruising but at any speed you either have the wap-wap-wap noise (anyone know the scientific term for this it seems to happen with all sunroofs?) or have to open the windows for extra wind noise.... i think i'll leave it on in future :)

For me it's the fact that almost every time I stop for fuel someone will pass comment on how nice it looks.......... a real feel good factor![:D]

Blimey I would check your car for leaks there Mr Smith, must be pretty damp if you've got grass growing in the back..[;)]

I had the same problem, turned up at the tip in a Sprinter with just an old book case in the back and was told to clear off, no trade waste, trade section only open weekdays and you have to pay. Van was a rental.

As we only have an MX-5, the S2 race car project and a 968 tiptronic you can guess which of our cars get used for moving stuff. The MX-5 is hilariously bad for space, I have on occasion opened the boot to chuck my wallet in [:D] (I'm not making this up)

Agree with the comments on best looking cabriolet, but strangely i like it better with the hood up.....am i a weirdo ?

Disregarding my pathological loathing of sunroofs for a moment, do you realise you can normally adjust the angle of the deflector at the front to prevent this noise? It's worth a try!

You can adjust the angle but the two springs that keep the outer pins out often go soft and past a certain speed the deflector just keeps down.

It is impossible to distil this into one point, I agree with all that has come before, but for me ultimately it is the fact that these cars have so few flaws. Sure they are not perfect or alot of use wouldn't be venturing down the modifying route, but their shortfalls are only apparent when you compare to machinery that is 20yrs younger and even then the gap isn't as wide as it should be - like it is for a 20yr old 911 for example. I think it is one of those rare cases where the whole is more than the sum of their parts.
