Horizontal fan on a 911? LOLA PORSCHE

Well done. Too much work which needs to be spot-on for gas tight seal ot heads. I had pondered using the 993 headers (without heater boxes) as a 'base' but your pics show the primary length differences even on the aftermarket units. Wife has granted permission to go to Turbo Thomas now, so i think this will be the route. Plan is to borrow a set of his 914-6 headers and see how they fit. If not too bad I can buy a set of unwelded tubes and DIY, but I'm contemplating having a custom build down at his place depending on cost. The primaries will be 1.625 dia and so will match the 3.2 head port size, 2'' secondaries. Thanks for the help!

Retiring the car for the year as brakes are iffy and Prescott is too tight to risk a car with iffy brakes! [] Will use the ever trusty 911 for the last hillclimb, so I don't care if it rains now.[:)] Time to start the re-build. [8D]

In your honour, dear boy, that flick is now my desktop wallpaper. When my sons asked who that was, I said that it was a famous old racer just keeping his hand in. They were somewhat impressed. JohnC 993turbo

Famous is incorrect. Old is very correct Keeping his hand in? I am marginally better at spanners than steering wheels! I hope to have far more satisfaction next year or it will be sold and I'll play with the 911 Bitza until I'm far too old![;)] [link=http://www.youtube.com/user/911hillclimber]http://www.youtube.com/user/911hillclimber[/link] I am very dissapointed with the car and my 'performance' but I've learnt a lot to say the least. The crunch in the Lola bemused me, the same crunch in the 911 would have devestated me, so I hope I have this little car in the right perspective at least. About to rip it all apart in October, and have borrowed a set of 914-6 headers from Rich at Turbo Thomas to see if I can fit them without too much welding.... Relaxing from the car in Sept then the race is one to get it perfect for April 2010

You're as old as you feel, and I feel that you feel about 20 at the moment. All frustrated and ratty. Now you didn't expect to get it totally right first time, did you? This is Motor Racing! Think of the gestation periods of most of the great cars. You've had the shakedown period, now you have time to polish the product. Keep us posted. JohnC 993turbo Also fairly old

Graham, the last thing you ought to be is disappointed. To assemble the car, and actually run it in competition in under 12 months is incredible. Now that you've got the basics, you have all winter to get it all working to your satisfaction. I for one think that it's an incredible bit of work, and am in awe of your skill and patience.......................... Now, don't take tooooo much apart ([8|]) and have it ready for a serious amount of track time next year! And leave time for a beer or three........(Christmas Dinner at Symonds Yat with the rest of the hillclimb mob is a must!) Cheers! JW[8D]

I am the original Mr Impatient, but many thanks for the right words to keep me going. I haven't looked at the Lola since Bank hols Sunday.[:'(] I'm off to SPA at the end of Sept, but will hit it hard after that. It will be easy this winter compared to last one.[8|] I certainly expected a far better result this year after so much work and money, but as you say, a basis for a concerted attempt to get it right over the next 6 months. I must try harder [&:] A Xmas party in the company of a bunch of Porsche types sounds a bit scarey to me...[;)] Graham

Don't worry, you won't remember anything about it afterwards - or what it was that you were supposed to be doing to the Lola - until well after the New Year![8D] JW

That's kind of you! I need to find the enthusiasm to keep it on my front page! I have not touched the car for 8 weeks which summs it up really, but I have been prepping things for action. Soon I will be restarting the work to get the car finally right for 2010 having learnt so much this year about real race cars. Body (with some tweeks to make it easier to handle at hillclimb venues) Silver with '908' Martini stripes.[8D] Headers hopefully using the 914-6 tubes loaned for now off Turbo Thomas or custom made, more welding ( [8|] ) Total brake refurb (a stable pedal will be nice) Move front roll hoop for greater leg room (more welding) Improve driver comfort in general (seat belts) Good clean and detail as it was a bit of a rush at the end.[:)] Massive chassis alignment by One who Knows[;)] Big engine tune by One who Knows to fix the stupid pops and explosions curse on the car this year with noise [8|] Quite a relaxed list but the body side to fix the crash damage and hinging the 2 clam shells will keep me very busy through Xmas.[>:]

I'll stick with it Alex, but about 6 weeks ago I would have sold it 'as-is' and gone back to my hotrod 911 for hillclimbing. I must find a way to get it right and less frustrating!

Had you thought of the order in which matters need to be dealt with? It would seem to me that setting up the suspension might be a good place to start; if you could do that and then test it a bit, to have a car that stops and steers would give you the impetus to tackle the other jobs as and when....Exhaust, then carburetion and tidy up followed by the clam shells last of all. I would be enormously proud to have done; what you have achieved has been worth the agony.

Thanks for the thoughts Alex. The order of work is governed as much by £££ as anything Sorting the body while the temperatures are not too cold will not cost much, will take a fair bit of time and will make me feel back in the groove. I'll paint it in March. The exhaust has always bugged me, and again time consuming and light on £££ to Xmas. Brakes next and the front roll hoop that was fabricated by another just 20mm too low. Simple cut and MIG and a new dashboard panel. A weekend at most. The money will be in the brakes, all new cylinders, discs (unless they can be ground) etc. The carbs are awful. They made such a racket with random but very frequent explosions on running I was nearly stopped from racing one meeting. Webers should not be like that. A local company HiTech will be used to tune them with the new exhaust. I plan the suspension for Feb as the last job (£££ again) and then a good dose of private test days throughout the early year. I'm doing this so I can tidy several places with machined spacers instead of 4 washers etc. I have a lot more room now, so working on the car should be a dream and uncluttered in the garage.

I am trying to locate the chassis number for the car, and a lot is happening with my 'other' crew of helpers on 10/10ths! Had pics found of the car as it was in 1987: I am so close to finding the chassis# but have hit a brick wall. In 1986 the Lola S2000 racer was sold to be modified. It was in Herne Bay/Whitstable and possibly owned by Tony Baskill. It's body was orange. This car though seems invisible to all who raced at the time! I will resume work on the car this weekend with the body reapirs and hinging the 2 halves for access without removal. That Karmann Ghia body looks good to me though!

It was low! This is the man who modified my tub in 86/87 John Scheider with Tony Harman of Haggispeed fame. It is history like this that makes this car so special to me.

Just thought I'd check in on progress! Been to most types of motorsport over the years but have never seen a Hillclimb so this year I want to see one, prefrably with this on the entry. So, I hope the enthusiasum has returned! Mike

Thanks for the thought. Enthusiasm is a bit thin on the ground for several reasons but picking up! The body is repaired but too cold to paint, so I've taken the engine out... I have started my new custom equalish primary length headers in correct dia stainless which is very hard to do in the space I have, one I've done one tube, 5 to go. When done the plan is to have it all back together in 6 weeks for a pro suspension set-up with the brakes refurbished beforehand, and then sort the noisey webers out. I will soften the rear suspension springs and if I have time the dampers re-calibrated to suit. I want to have it ready for the April on 2010 season so I can focus on it. It is as hard to drive as it has been to build[&:]
