Horizontal fan on a 911? LOLA PORSCHE

A good solid 5 hours spent on the headers yesterday and some progress made at last. I need to mirror-image the system on the other bank, but i will make the collectors and form the secondary pipe to the silencer first. I will have to put the box back onto the engine to do this as it is critical to get the secondary right up close to the CV joint. I had forgotten just how tight it is under there!

This task is much harder than you can imagine, but some progress! I think I'm about 50% done now. Secondaries next and sneeking past the CV's super tightly. That should try my limited patience....

I'm trying to! The headers are at the TIG welders tonight for zipping up. I'll have him add a few slip joints to ease the stress between each flange as the welds will pull like mad. He wants 10 days (he is busy) so in that time: 1 Re-do the electrics on the new dash 2 Get the brakes serviced/skimmed/new cylinders 3 Clean the whole car / body/ /tub / chassis and touch-up paint chips 4 Get wheel repaired. The car is penciled in for a full pro suspension job in late Feb, so just 6 weeks to go. Webers sorted after the above....that will be an interesting one. I wonder if I can resist a set of 46 PMO's?
 
Hearsay is that PMOs are better made than modern Webers. As yet, I haven't heard a convincing explanation of why bigger carbs, necessarily running smaller chokes, are better than the smaller carb running at the optimum. If PMOs accept Weber chokes and jets, I have a boxes of chokes and a big range of jets for you to fiddle with whilst on the rollers. Let me know if that'd be any help. Graham's engine always ran on Weber 46's when Terry Davison had it in his Nomad, and raced it all over Europe. I was lucky enough to have driven it at Prescott, and it started and ticked over like a normal road car, and pulled like a train, so it may well be restricted slightly on the current 40's. Cheers! I will give the 'choked' 40's one last go on the rollers with the new headers. If it runs cleanly /quietly with 200 bhp then that will be enough for 2010. I can look to 46's in 2011. Brakes are in for grinding as of today, and i've found the man to do my wheel who did real mags for a few last year. I hope to get all the bits back inside of 2 weeks for the re-assembly to be completed by early Feb, then to the suspension man, then to the rollers. My focus is currently on the clutch. It is a simple single plate Sach alum sports clutch on a stock flywheel. The release is by an AP cylinder, 1'' bore and about 1.25'' stroke. The weight is horrendous on the pedal, so I need to sort this. When you drove it Jonathan i think the clutch was ok? Maybe the Nomad had a better leverage ratio on the pedal system compared to the Lola? Lots to do! Graham.

You've certainly done a lot more on your car than I have on mine over Christmas! I don't remember anything particular about the Nomad clutch, so I would assume that it wasn't too heavy!!! I know when I had the same clutch as the one in the Lola in my 911 for 12 months, waiting for my triple plate unit to be refurbished, it was VERY heavy. Now I've got the triple plate one back, I nearly dented the floor the first few times it was so light in comparison[&:] The headers look fabulous. I hope you get them welded without too much distortion. Terry D has plans afoot to come back to the hills in a 911 this year, so we've got more company![8D] Happy New Year! JW
 
Happy New Year to you too! I remember that tripple you had last year and how feather weight it was. I'll have to stick to the single for now, but the tripple you and Paul had made (Helix?) was not 'too' expensive?
 
Just a point the 906 run on 46 webs,fantastic.230bhp from a 2.0ltr!I think porsche know how to get these engines to breath correctly.Big ports and long primaries on the 906 .,i run 38mm primary on my 3.8 engine and fairly small throttle bodies. The helix clutch i finely gave up with and sent it back for a refund,its not the same as JW for some reason,probably infringing on Cornish copy writing laws[:-] Good work on the headers graham.
 
Thanks for the details Paul. I have made the headers with an ID same as the 3.2's exhaust ports, 19'' primary length and 2'' secondaries which have to be very short because of the silencers. The silencers are as short a set as I could find with 2'' in/2'' out and enough to kill the noise. I would rather spend the money on the 46's than a clutch! Above all I want a drivable engine. You know what getting out of hillclimb bends is like, so a gutsy motor and about 225 of bhp/lbft will be good enough for me in 600Kg of mid engined car....[&:]
 
Things have happened, but progress has taken some time! The headers were all tacked together and sent for tig welding and with fingers crossed that they would not distort too much. Things are very close in the chassis area. Here they are before final welding:

£315 of labour and materials later they were back, and one side even fitted! The other needed a pipe cutting and a slip joint making and welded on and that side dropped on too. (phew) Bolted back onto the engine, the clutch back in, the gearbox leak having been fixed (gasket) and the lot positioned for the drop into the chassis:

Of course, it fouls the chassis.

The one tube 'just' touches the chassis, so after a bit of thinking I decided to raise the whole drive train 12mm, just 4 cuts and that will be that. Well, nearly. The front crossmember was cut (again) to raise the front. All done and trial fitted, I jacked the box up to level the drive train in the chassis and pondered cutting the gearbox cross member which is quite complex. After cutting and welding it went back in, still cooling down after some of the nicest mig welds I've done. It just looked terrible! So, out with the hacksaw again, and cut all the work I had done for the last hour and welded in some more tubes which look really nice in comparison. A lick of paint on both before roast beef and tonight all is dry and ready to be installed. The headers are noe 10mm clear of ecerything and I can start to button all the supplies up this week. Brakes are back with fresh surfaces on the discs and 2 new mastercylinders too all for £160!

On saturday went and bought a Brian James trailer second hand and carried on to York to drop-off my precious Dymag wheels which were both damaged. however, the most precious on is badly buckeled and I think is scrap and the other is better but stands a good chance. Magnesium wheels are not very strong. If both are scrap I am in deep (expensive) trouble....
