How is this possible?

Any hint which competitor Bob? I'm also looking to move on....for me it is McLaren 570S!!
Geoff, its an amazing car - but be warned its a terrible company!! []

I have a McLaren720S coming later this year and yes one of the main reasons I am moving away from a Porsche sports car (for the time being at least) is that Porsche and my current OPC simply wont let me buy the car I want. Porsche has some wonderful products and take some beating in terms of quality/value/perfomance but in my view they have made a mess and underallocated the GT cars to the UK. They could easily build a few more GT cars for the UK if they wanted to as it is a tiny fraction of their total production but prefer to pour fuel on the flames by sending me regular marketing E Mails about cars they wont let me purchase. My KN means I will still be a Porsche owner and member of the club.

Its interesting in talking to McLaren owners they often comment that they love the car and hate the company. I think one of the reasons for this is McLaren are growing rapidly and the infrastructure has not kept up with the sales growth. There are ony 6 retailers in the UK and 4 of therm are owned by two firms so not a lot of competitive pressures. They are like a cottage induatry compared to Porsche who make more cars every week than Mclaren do in a year. McLaren can not possibly compete with Porsche in terms of R & D and development but their cars are a joy to drive but somewhat pricey to buy and maintain. Still cheaper than a boat though

I did have many sleepless night agonising over the 488 versus 720S decision and only time will tell if I made the right decison for me

Nice choice Bob, I think technically its the right choice.
The 720 has seriously grown on me with its looks and the owners reviews are seemingly very good - once they get away from the dealerships.
I did consider one myself but just cannot currently bring myself to spend any more money with the company [&o]
Yes, The dealers are lacking - however I'm lucky that I'm fairly well looked after and have a local service centre, however they are not looked after by HQ, which sadly leads to how many of us owners feel about the mothership and the company.

The closest I can compare it to is a car supermarket, once they have your payment then they no longer have any interest in you.
On the upside, when driving the car it is a joy. [:D]
Maybe in the next few months as many start to dispose of their LE cars, then the good deals will draw me back in!! [;)]

Its funny how so many companies spend a fortune on marketing to attract new customers but at the same time ignore or upset the customers they already have

I am surprised we have not seen any comments on the forum about the new GT3 Touring Package which looks amazingly like a 911R only with a better engine and other improvements. I did get excited for a few seconds when I read a Porsche executive at Frankfurt say "this is not a limited production vehicle" which kind of suggests that you can buy one if you want to but of course that is wishful thinking. What he meant was it is not limited like the 911R was to 911 vehicles but the same old problem of lack of supply to the UK still applies. You can only get a Touring Package if you have a GT 3 allocation and of course many of us do not.

It does look like a fabulous car though for anyone who wants the performance and personality of a GT 3 without the drama of the spolier and its list price is only £10k more than a similarly equipped GTS. When the reviews come it should make interesting reading but in my view this will probaly be one of the best 911 models ever built for many. I have to say I am quite pleased I did not pay way over list for a 911R though as I know which car I would prefer were I able to buy one. In some ways I am pleased I cant as I would have countless sleppless nights over whether to go PDK (which is a fantastic gearbox in this car) or manual or full fat GT 3 with spoler or Touring Package. What a choice to have to make agony!!

Yes, apparently OPC's were inundated with calls after AP's statement only to be disappointed all over again! I don't mind a joke but this is now a pantomime. For those desperate for a car the dealer in Kuala Lumpur has allocation for 6 (RHD) they can't shift apparently. Unfortunately the KL price is more than the flippers want here.

The OPC's dont mind the flipping provided the car is sold through them as they do very nicely out of it. There are currently 20 991 GT 3's for sale through OPC's with everyone above the original list price. There are 12 991 RS's all £50k or more over original list and obviously that doesnt include the cars already sold since launch. Its a simple economic problem strong demand for a great product but weak supply so price goes high. PGB does not allow OPC's to sell new cars above list but the same restriction does not apply to used. Geoff I suspect the senior guys in Germany have no idea what is going on in the UK

Matt Prior's opinion column in today's Autocar makes interesting and relevant reading.

Makes some of the points reflected in this thread.

I regret that I am not sufficiently competent to include it here but would probably be infringing copyright if I were.
