Is KW user friendly?

Hilux,
When I upgraded to Big Blacks I was provided a front and rear set of Mintex 1155's, but unfortunately they provided me with the pads for my old front calipers and not the new big blacks. Because I got the kit in the states I couldn't be bothered with faffing around returning them so I just fitted EBC Yellows. Because my car is an '87 turbo it has the S2 brakes which mean it was the same brake pads front and rear. If you want the Mintex pads I can give you one pair which you can use for your rears. I tried to sell them but had no takers (and they seem to go for a pittance on ebay) so thought I might as well keep hold of them. I am keeping hold of one pair of the pads in case I want to fit Mintex pads in future but you can have the other pair for your rears.

By the way, even though i've not got much of a frame of reference the EBC yellows seem perfectly competent for road use, they have good cold bite (which I didn't get from EBC Ceramic Reds on my previous brake set up) and although i've not used them on track they seem to stand upto high temps well. They do tend to glaze a bit and squeal with normal road use but you can easily remove the glazing by working some temperature into them (there are plenty of roundabouts near me where you can build up good temps quickly) afterwhich they don't squeal so much. Hoever they don't have the slot for the brake wear sensor.

If my car was not being used on the road so much I would fit the PF pads as Fen and so many other people rave on about them.

how about

K300 - stuart seems pretty good on most prices - and does forum discounts

Rally Design - I've always got good prices from them on pads. i think I paid IRO £90 for 1155's for the 250 turbo. www.rallydesign.co.uk

Sorry Hilux, i've just checked and mine are Mintex 1456's not 1155's. Not sure where these stack up in comparison but the offer is still there if you want them.

Thanks Scott

I`ll check on their capabilities as the rears do not get the same hammering and are probably ok even on the original pads IMO

Just out of interest how much do you need to lower the rear suspension to accommodate KW's? Do you have to re-index the torsion bars or is it withing the adjustability of the eccentrics?

Definite reindex. I forget the guideline for splines buit it's something like 6 on one end and 5 on the other to get a 35mm drop as I recall.

Dunno but mines already lower than some cars I`ve noted, dont know if thats the Mo30 so I wait to find out what is required when it now goes in on 3rd Feb. [8D] A week earlier.

Should be on for Silverstone if its running ok [;)]

Update...................................

KW V3 went on without mishap and saved quite a few hours labour (for other things [&:]) ........thanks for the honesty Andy. No mount issues while TB was re-indexed as all is ok (phew[:)])

Weltmeister ARB`s are being fitted alongside 968 castor mounts

Sebro ventilated discs are fitted with no issue.

The front calipers were removed and the plate lift was v v bad. The plates had to be replaced although Andy tempted me with a big blacks deal but I have a limited budget [&:] One 44m piston seal required.

New braided hoses are fitted and ATE fluid installed.

New clutch hose required and fitted at my request as the old one was weeping at the master cylinder..

New steering rack gaiter required and fitted for MOT.

I asked them to change the fuel filter as it had rusty fittings and looked like the original (or a v v old one) as I knew that if the hose failed (which it did) its a v quick job on a 4 poster. I was concerned re collapsed hoses and poor fuel pressure with a blocked filter making the engine suddenly run lean.

New calliper bolts all around.

Rear callipers had (guess what) plate lift, one ok the other the bl**dy screw sheared so a refurbed calliper required [&:]

Braided hoses fitted apart from one which looked damaged so a replacement is due.

Rear pads low so standard Textar fitted at my request ( the rears dont do much work - Andy agrees)

Andy did me a great deal and I`ve now got Performance friction pads instead of Mintex 1155`s [8D]

Nearly there now, requires an MOT which shouldnt be an issue and the car needs to be tested and driven and set up which will take longer due to the weather so I wont see it until next week.

If all goes well I`ll pick it up next week and drive it for a week or two to see how I like it. Then I take it back for checking and resetting due to settling/wearing in however this time it`ll be done in Promax`s new base between MK and Buckingham where they have invested in and installed their new state of the art suspension equipment [8D][8D]

So far they have kept me informed with progress, costs and recommendations/advice.

Its all starting to come together Paul and your car should feel ten times better when you get it back [8D]

Still plenty of space at Bedford Autodrome on 24th February to give it a good testing

Remember we get a £19 discount down to £140 [:)]

Your car WILL feel great when its done...
I know mine did....[:D][:D][:D]

Looks like you had some proper plate lift there......
So your brakes will also be great..
Itl be like getting a new car.....

Paul Hilux, wow you will not know your car when you get it back on the road! Not only will the KW's transform the handling and grip, but the PFC's will open a new dimension in braking. Do you know which compounds you have front and rear?

Go on Paul, you know you want to!!

By the way have you stuck with your original M030 top mounts?

Hi Scott

Yup

Not sure how much extra flex will be introduced with the new set up though

Thanks, [:D] I hope the PFC`s bring back the F1 style brakes I`ve been used to on the G27 and the Westfield. ie: hit the brakes hard as you can, no locking, massive retardation, no drama, you`re held back only by the harnesses (passengers screaming [;)]) STI scoobys et al disappearing backwards at roundabouts etc etc

Still hanker after big blacks or bigger, not to be flash its just that most people havent experienced really really really good brakes. Roger reckons big blacks will fit under 16" wheels?? Mind you my next desire is slightly more power (to offset primarily the performance loss caused by a passenger) and Cup 1`s (I never see any the right size for sale [])

I`ve got perf friction front (I`ve left it to Andy and Roger at Promax for the compound) and standard Textar at the back as I cannot see the need for anything else/exotic at the rear unless you actually race the car (unless y`all know different [;)])

I went with PF 97 all round so it was a matched set. I also intend to have a proportioning valve installed so I can get the rears doing a bit more if I feel I want them to.

Well on Fen's excellent advice I too went with the pfc's and have 01's f and 97's r and I am also putting in said valve. Seems to be a recommended mod. I couldn't believe the difference to my braking after the ebc yellows. Absolutely fantastic but having said that I'm sure Pagids and Porterfields are also very good. Don't know about the Big's under 16"s I'd make sure before you forked out Paul.
Oh by the way, have any of you guys heard of Alcon brakes? They seem to have a good reputation and I think they're a U.K. mob?

There isn't much space between the BB calipers and the inside of the wheel with my 17" wheels. I doubt there is the half an inch you'd need to fit 16" wheels.

I doubt that 16" D90s would fit over big blacks, but maybe some 16" design might?

Alcon is a name I'm familiar with, but I haven't used any of their kit. I believe they do big stoppers for serious cars.
