My Experience - 9XX KH Racing Chip

It's more like three years ... >shame<[]

Oli is quite right to think this through properly and in a timely manner (maybe not years though [:-] ).

Lets not forget that after chipping his S2 he may have nearly the same amount of power as a poorly Turbo. He needs to make sure his driving skills and reactions are up to this new found power [;)] :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

FRWilk told me Porsche coded restrictions into the S2's engine management code (the running code not the maps). I think the KH chips would remove these restrictions as it sounds like he wrote them in the first place and completely re-wrote the code for his chips rather than just changing the maps. Not sure what those restrictions were exactly, if they were really a major issue or if the Promax chips do the same.

I think the reasons everyone talks about the Promax chip is that it has been around for a while so many have tried them. I am happy to be corrected but I think the chips listed on JMG's site are relatively new. Seems odd that the chip for the 'S' is more than the Lux or S2 though.

Umm, sounds like sales-speak to me. What is the engine management code if it isn't in the engine management chip?

Perhaps I'm too cynical ... (Unlike Paul and Nick; they're just bar-stewards [;)] )

Oli.

I don't think its all sales speak, although I can't be sure. FRWilk is independant of JMG and KH so I have no reason to doubt him when he says Porsche coded restriction into the S2's DME. If KH did originally program those ECU's he certainly would know how to fix them. Worth some investigation, certainly would be good for somone to do a comparison.

Fair cop Tom. Apologies - when you first referred to FRWilk I assumed you meant the guy who was selling them. I was a little premature (and critical) perhaps.

I guess I am skeptical as I have never heard of these people before, and everyone raves over the Promax offering. And there is the fact that Promax is only 2/3 of the price ... should you pay more to go with an unheard of option, or pay less for the known, tried and tested one?

Hmmm. If there was a garunteed money-back-if-you-don't-like-it offer on them both then I'd have a go with both, and try the one I liked the most. I know that Promax offer this; do JMG/KH?

Why not call him and find out?

My 3.2 Turbo had KH chips when I was first running it in and before I installed the MAF. They ran fantastically and coped with an engine that was well outside the parameters that KH had written the chip for.

No need to apologise, there is a plenty of overhyping of products about. Certainly worth asking JMG if they will allow you to send it back.

Chaps,

I think I'll do just that: call him and ask.

Paul, I hadn't heard of KH before reading this thread. Perhaps that's 'cos "chips" are usually the domain of turbo owners, and hence I haven't delved into them much (if at all.) Thanks for your helpful recommendation of them. If I could get both the Promax one and the KH one, on sale-or-return, I could try them back-to-back and post up the results.

Hmmm. Could make for quite a good get-together. Anyone else with an S2 who'd like to join in? (Although the legalities and insurance situation could both be tricksy.)

Oli.

I seem to remember John Mitchell talking about these chips being the code used by Porsche themselves for 944 testing/developing/racing - or something along those lines. The maps that Porsche would use for the production cars would be restricted with regards to performance for many reasons - to achieve set targets for emissions, reliability, allowance for contaminated/ropey fuel and i'm, sure a bit of positioning relative to other models performance would be added into the mix. The old adage that is spouted about on this and other forums when the topic of modding comes up that says" I'm sure Porsche Engineers know what they are doing" is cobblers because of this, that is why no production car is as good as it could possibly be or there would be no modding market.

ChasR... good point about making sure all the relevant parts are in good order. Had the cap and rotor replaced with Bosch items at last visit to my Indie.

Oli....I think the only way to get a meaningful comparison would be to have 2-3 or more cars on a Dyno and do a back to back test. Sure, this won't tell the whole story, but if you add owners impression of the effect on their own cars that should give a better picture - I'd be up for it.

IIRC Andrew Sweetnam of ProMax did offer a back to back, sale or return at the Dyno day a couple of years back, but I don't recall anybody taking it up.

I think there's 2 seperate discussions within this thread - I'm referring to the O.P regarding the Jon Mitchell / K.H chip in a N/A car.

On his website, Jon M quotes K.H chips for all models not 9XX [&:]

Just for clarification - Jon Mitchells Garage (JMG) is 9XX. He is the only one who sells Klaus Hoffman (KH) chipsets

Oli, if you need a second S2 to do a back to back comparison with on the chips I'd be happy to have mine in the mix.

9XX is a tuning company run by JM. It doesnt mean generic porsche models starting with a 9 if thats what your thinking.

No...what I meant was he states that all the chips are K.H and he hasn't called them 9XX chips.

I understand that some items listed as 9XX are parts developed by Jon and others are 3rd party or a combination of both.

Ah right, to clairfy then this is taken from the description for the chips.

The 9XX K Hoffmann chips are developed and designed by the man who designed the original chipset in your Porsche 944 turbo, working hand in hand with the engineers and technicians at 9XX Porsche performance products.

Chaps,

To update this thread slightly. I am in the process of getting the S2 chip ball rolling, and have called both Promax and JMGarage to talk about buying a chip from each of them on sale-or-return. It sounds like I'll need to eMail for more details, but as and when there is more to tell then I'll post it up here.

Oli.
