New 944 Owner

On another note. I really like the look of the Turbo/S2 rear valance. Are they easy to fit or should/shouldn't I fit for originalities sake?
 
You can easily do something about the wiggly gearstick.

At the front end, the gearstick has a horizontal pin, onto which an arm slots. The hole in the arm and the pin itself wear away over the years, leaving the joint very sloppy.

Contact Jon Mitchell at www.jmgarage.com - he sells refurbished gearsticks that come with bushings to take up the slack. It's a simple job (I'm a mechanical novice but managed it fine), and if you send him back your old, worn gearstick afterwards he gives you a tenner back.

Wear also occurs at the rear end, but that's a much trickier job to fix. Sorting the stick itself usually makes a massive difference and is enough for most people.

I agree with Pop' 100% well worth doing. If this doesn't cure the problem completely I would recommend subcontracting the rear linkage replacement. The linkage is on top of the gear box and is a sod to get to. Mine was also covered in black disgusting.

By boot. hydraulics I assume you mean the tailgate struts. These are very easy to replace - pry off the spring steel clip on the back of the ball joint and it pulls straight off. It is best to get someone top hold the tailgate at the time, or prop it open, otherwise it may fall on you and kill you. [&:]

I echo Johns comments re the tailgate. It is surprisingly heavy and once you disconnect one of the old stuts it will likely fall on your head so be careful. Make sure your new struts have the electrical connections for the heated rear window and the boot light as some cheaper ones do not. Bert at www.berlyn-services.co.uk stocks the correct ones IIRC

The standard 1983 lux wheels were 15" all round

are the bonnet struts as easy to replace? How do they clip off at the bottom; I can see that at the top there is a clip which can be undone but where they are held at the bottom it is less clear.
 
I've never done my bonnet struts (though the turbo ones are due becuase it struggles to stay open) and assumed it was the same or similar to the tailgate. One thing I do know is to be careful not to open the bonnet too much when the struts are off as it is easy to lever it back on to the the windscreen and A pillars causing damage [:mad:]

The bottom just pulls off once the top has been separated from the bonnet. They are slightly under compression even when the bonnet's fully up so it's a bit of a bugger to get the new one on, best to wrap a towel or something round it (for grip), put your body weight on it to push it down & have an assistant feed the connecting pin through the holes as you lean on the strut. The back ones aren't all that hard, you can do it alone if you're tall enough to support the boot with your head [;)]

Looking at your picture, the offset of the rears looks wrong - too far inboard.

Have just ordered 2 struts for the bonnet from Bert at Berlyn - I'll let you know how easy they are to change

I thought that myself - would this be due to the fact that it has later alloys fitted to a 1983? (different offset on later cars?)

Yes.

The early alloys have a 23mm offset and the later ones are 52mm. You need to get a proper set of 23mm rear alloys or buy some expensive 30mm spacers to move your wheels out to where they should be.
