New 944 S2 owner saying hello

ORIGINAL: Fen I've dropped you a mail Ian - let me know if you don't get it as they can be flaky through the forum. Ironically I stuck my Mini on TradeMe at the weekend and might have someone on that (I just don't use it any more) and was thinking if it does go I'll ship the 944 out, but I'd rather sell it as well I guess and I'll only container it here rather than leave it sitting in the UK for much longer. I dunno what I'd do if I only had one car though so I'd need to buy something else pretty quick! [:D]
Can you import the 944 to NZ? I know that it varies between difficult and impossible depending on age...

No problem whatsoever so long as it's clean. I doubt I'd want to register it for the road, but even that should be possible without too many problems relating to it being imported. It's the need to get pretty much every modification certified so it could be registered that would be the hassle, and given how little I'd use it I doubt I could be bothered. That would also allow me to ditch some more stuff like the headlights and to fit a full cage tied into the suspension mounts if it's never going on the road.

No, it's not what most people would assume. I'm pretty sure it would be OK to register if it were standard though as I researched it before I elected to leave it in the UK last year. The key is a frontal impact standard and Porsche (bless them) have declared that pretty much anything they have made since 1986 or thereabouts meets it. It's not as strict here as it seems anyway - I understood that LHD was only allowed for genuine classics, but I know of a LHD current model Mustang that's registered, and I've seen a VX220 on the road even though they technically have never been through the frontal impact testing.

You have email edh....or should have it system works [;)] Ian
ORIGINAL: edh I see - you mean a car that has been driven & not just polished [:D][:D] You're much better off getting a car that has been doing regular mileage over the past 3-4 years rather than one that has sat around quietly disintegrating.
ORIGINAL: thetyrant I know what you mean but i dont mean really tatty [;)] ....just maybe a few light marks here and there and stone chips etc but noting tooo serious of course, seen the odd one come up for sale that are like this where they have been used regular but seemingly serviced/maintained well only paint etc is starting to get a little rough around the edges, of course i know this often means other things are neglected but providing they arent them seem a possible good buy [:D] Ian
ORIGINAL: edh I think the answer to most of those questions is yes [:D] - only thing I would say is - can you trust a "tatty"car? If someone has cared enough about the mechanical side of the car to spend proper money on it, it's unlikely they will have let the body / interior deteriorate significantly.

If you'd rather sell the 944 I would be very interested in it but I would have to wait a couple months to get a bit more coinage together though first.

The guy on the Mini sounds keen and is coming to see it on Sunday, but even if he takes it away I won't get anything arranged to export the 944 very quickly and I would rather sell it and just avoid the hassle. It needs a bit of putting together still, but chances are you know more about what it looks like right now than I do.

Good luck with the sale for your mini on Sunday anyway is it a Cooper S? I remember you saying before but I've forgotten already. I'll probably be able to see it this weekend as I'll be dropping my car off down to Andy and I'll have good look around your car then.

OK, let me know if you're really interested after the weekend and I'll know where I am with the Mini. [link=http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=191796076]http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=191796076[/link]

That I will do, I'm going to look at it with my mother on Saturday as she gets use of my cars as well and I should have some idea then all I can remember is that I like the look of it and was thinking of trying to make my car look a bit like it but in red, I gave up though anyway as I lost interest in doing that after a while.

I'm very happy and proud to say that Santa bought me a white 944 S2 for Christmas...so I'm no longer a "prospective" owner, but a newbie owner! I have been paying attention to all the advice given by you guys and decided against the Cat. C red 944 S2. It's a 1990 model with full service history, cam belts and rollers recently changed, as well as a new cam chain and tensioner fitted. There's very little rust on the sills - some bubbles coming through on the off-side near the rear arch but they are by no means crunchy! The car's nice and tidy mechanically, drives and stops like a dream (new pads at the last service) and the black leather interior is almost mint - there's the expected wear/creases from 18 years of use but no cracks/tears that I could find - the previous owner has been religiously applying leather cream to the seats (and polished the car regularly)! It even came with the sun-roof bag, space-saver kit & pump and toolkit! As the interior is in such good condition, I feel rather bad stripping it for track use...but those seats will probably pay for a lot of the track-prep work! I haven't had a chance to take photos yet, but will no doubt post them as soon as the snow goes away.
