New Boxster

Good choice.

We're on our fourth Boxster since 1997, an 05 987S. Never been aware of any engine rattles or RMS failures.

RMS seems to be less of an issue on later cars but probably not entirely cured. Covered under warranty so don't worry about it.

These problems do not affect every car; however, like most cars - from any manufacturer, a few suffer. Both are an irritation rather than serious, however they are covered by the warranty. The RMS issue has existed for many years and - if you use the search function - there are many hours of reading for you to enjoy! Porsche insurance is competitive and its policy offers more comprehensive cover than those readily available from the mainstream insurers; your OPC will be able to provide you with details.

I've had 2 Boxsters - a 986S and now a 987S - and neither has suffered from the rattle or RMS leak; also, my current car is insured with Porsche Insurance.

Hi Harry
I wouldn't worry too much about the 2100 rpm rattle - this is being investigated and (hopefully) retro sorted for existing affected cars, so by the time your car has been assembled the modification required should have been made at the factory.
I have had 2 Boxsters (brilliant cars) and neither were affected by RMS - again, this just seems to happen to an unfortunate few (still too many though on a car of this value).
I would just look forward to the day when your pride and joy arrives, just in time for summer - good timing![:D]

Thank you all for taking time out to reply. I think i am over reacting a little - after all if you read a Porsche dedicated forum its bound to have problems listed and it seem like they affect "everyone". My other choice was a 350Z (hard top) - you want to read that forum, scary! But in the end shelled out the extra dough for my first Porsche. The next thing is going to see what the dealer offers me for my current car, a 325 Beemeer, after all it seems to me they've got you by the doodahs by that stage and can offer what they like. I am looking forward to my first Porsche though, cant wait in fact.

Thanks again, Harry

Congratulations on your Boxster order!

I have a Jan 05 987S as a daily driver which is now approaching 10k miles. So far, I have not experienced any 2100 rpm rattles, RMS leaks or anything beyond a broken plastic flap in the center dash air vent, which is so minor I feel bad for even mentioning it ;) .

The car feels rock solid and is a blast to drive.

For insurance, I turned to Admiral. Porsche quoted me silly money (>5000) since I had only moved to the UK a year ago and thus had no accessible no claims bonus at the time. My car just happens to come with a tracker monitor but Admiral doesn't care one way or another.

Hope you enjoy your car when you get it. It's a fantastic machine and I've had a blast with my 986 but to be honest, I'm beginning to get a wee bit nervous about owning it. I've had it about 18months now and I've been back to the dealer probably 8 or 9 times for minor faults. I've had the radio replaced as it kept losing its settings - it took 3 attempts to sort this out and I've recently noticed that the new radio is randomly losing its settings again. It took 2 attempts to sort out a clunking when the drivers window drops. It took 4 visits for the dealer to resolve problems with softtop allignment and its microswitches - the warning lights stopped coming on while the hood was being raised and lowered.

The thing that makes me nervous is the hood microswitch problem has just reared its head again, which in itself is not a huge issue, it's the change in the OPC's attitude that has me worried. They very quickly told me this morning, as I was booking the car in, that the repairs would be my problem as the manufacturer's warranty has expired, despite the fact that they know this is the exact same problem they tried to fix 8 or 9 months ago under the original warranty. I do have 9 months to run on an extended warranty anyway and when I informed the service chap of this I still got the "we'll have to check the parts are covered" quote.

I've been very patient with them considering they never managed to deal with a problem in one attempt and most of the problems are now occurring again (along with a dead rear window heater). Now I'm a bit miffed about the definite change in attitude. Obviously other dealers may have a better attitude but when you factor in things like a mere 2 year standard warranty, design flaws like RMS failure that they refuse to acknowldege, you start to think that when things do go wrong you're seriously screwed (unless perhaps you pay the 800quid a year for the partial piece of mind of an extended warranty). I expected more from Porsche (no wonder independants thrive)

PS. The RAC got me a reasonable quote from their bucket of underwriters, that covers all optional extras, unlike the other insurers like Admiral, Churchill, etc. I think it was about the £700 mark, and that's parked in a city street, but then I am 38 with full NCB.

Thanks to everyone who has replied and posted here, it is appreciated. I just got a quote from Porsche insurance (as if I were to insure today, although cars not due till March) and they were pretty reasonable, not the cheapest, for 2 drivers with good NCB around £1000. Our current insurer (peugeot insurance - who have been excellent, we had a peugeot once with free insurance and have stuck with them) are cheaper but insist upon a Tracker.
Thanks again, Harry

Just had a call from the OPC....."good news sir! your Boxster is being built in Jan and will be with us by the end of Jan....so youll be able to take delivery early Feb". Strange...we ordered it for March delivery, why would I want the blooming thing in Feb!?! Have they tried this 'trick' with others, presumably for Feb sales figures?
Harry

Yes it happened to me. I'd sorted a mid June delivery and in mid Feb I got a call to say an earlier delivery had come up in April and would I like to finalise the the details for it.

I was quite happy to say no. I'd booked a June delivery and that's what I was going to have. As it turned out it arrived 2 weeks early at the very end of May, but I wasn't going to argue over that.

I did say no by the way, March delivery it is, just a bit worried its gonna sit somewhere for a month!

Don't worry they all sit somewhere undesirable to the forthcoming first owner before actual delivery is finally made.

My last 3 Boxsters all came in earlier than planned. In fact my last 986 arrived early January 03 even though it was meant to have been a Feb build for March delivery. I was assured the car was being kept in an underground secure storage area but I wouldn't have bet any money on that being the actual case [;)]

As long as it's delivered mint and immaculate on the day where its been between leaving the production line and delivery isn't worth thinking about [:-]

Hi Harry,

Firstly happy new year to you. I own an 05 3.2s which is currently suffering from this rattle which has been reported in this forum. I have been told by my OPC that it is the oil pressure safety relief valve making the rattle. I find it quite a concern that Porsche could engineer a piece of safety equipment with what appears to be a defect. My OPC has told me it is waiting for the parts to arrive which should rectify the problem all under warrenty. Aside from this the car is great fun to drive and you should look forward to having a great time driving it.

I was recently in my OPC where they had a couple of new cars in awaitig delivery. They were all covered in Porsche cloth car covers and stored safely in a corner of the garage.

Seemingly Porsche have very strict standards for their OPC's for cars that have been sold awaiting collection...

Yeah, like thats ever going to be enforced ! I used to live opposite a high end crash repair centre... and the stream of new cars going in and out for paint on their PDI was crazy...

Hmmmm...thanks for those words of comfort penfold!
Sorry to hear of your problem Baz, i'm hoping they have a fix for this at build time.
Harry

Mark I have the Porsche upgrade £388 which is more than adequate for my needs as I can't get enough of the exhaust / engine sound track [;)]

One way of easing the pain is the substantial discounts on imports www.eclasslondon.com 12% off list on a Boxster
