Ohlins Vs Bilstein Vs KW - suspension query

I had the EMC remote canister Gaz Gold setup on my ex 2010 build Turbo road legal racecar, the Gaz stuff is a great value Inexpensive race soloution but it needs to be rebuilt a lot I found which is ok on a pampered race or track car it's drivable on the road but I wouldn't say it was overly refined ride was ok but squeaks and clangs a bit,I have JRZ on my current 968 racecar and the quality is in another league. For fast road use and occasional track use in a car that's not a fully stripped out track car KW V3 is a great value soloution( i have it on my 89 turbo road car) that lots of us have tried, very comfy on the road, just enough to punt around on a track day and doesn't corrode like a lot of race solutions...(will you be driving the car on the road in winter exposing it to salty roads?) Manthey racing at the Nurburgring use KW on their road car tuning packages so it must be good! You have to identify what the car will be used for 90 percent of the time and Pick what you think is best.[:)] In a nutshell Race or mostly track go for a race settup like GAZ or other brands mentioned in the thread Fast road and occasional track days -KW V3 is a good choice Would be great to hear what you pick and your findings afterwards.[:)]

Thanks for the feedback MarkK. That rules out Gaz. Too much choice is a bad thing sometimes! :) I hope to make a decision today or by the end of the weekend at the latest. With KW, v3 seems like the preferred option by most but when you add top mounts with the v3 package, buying the KWcs with top mounts is cheaper. I appreciate the general feeling is v3 should suffice for a road car with occasional track use (and the cs option is overkill and maybe less comfortable as a daily drive), but I'm hoping with the extra flexibility/adjustment of the cs package, Chris at Centre gravity will be able to set the car up as per my needs? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Really the KWs are the best choice out there for a road / clubcar application. If you are concerned that the V3s might just be a bit to much on the soft side, have a look at the clubsports.

Spoke to Chris about Gaz Gold v KWv3 v KWcs v H&R v Bilstein escort cup. Have decided to take the plunge with KWv3 and the KW top mount. Not the cheapest option but everyone here has them and Chris spoke very highly of them too. Now just need to book the car in and wait. Thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and opinions.

As with Mark I have very mixed experience with Gaz. They worked perfectly last time I drove the car at Mallory a couple of months back but this was after a good year + when the car never handled right. After a rebuild of the fronts it was clear the fronts had gone soft by the time they where first fitted on the car, in other words when I drove the car on the road back in March to shake it down I was stunned how stiff the front end suddenly felt compared to how it had ever felt before. The winter rebuild was due the front left losing all its gas and oil by last autumn, the front right was starting to lose oil and had very little gas pressure left (spongy in the hands so useless on a car). Then after half a test day the day before the first race of this last season (Brands in May) the front left blew out all its oil. The weld at the bottom of the strut had failed. Rebuilt again it seems OK, for now and works stunningly well but for how long is anyones guess. Interestingly its only been a problem with the fronts for me and predominantly the front left strut. The rear coilovers are three years old now and produced fantastic damper dyno curves when tested by Ian Gardiner. Would be interesting to hear Mark if your issues were also with just the struts.

They look lovely in the box,get a photo for your service history the person buying your car one day might not know KW....

Hi Neil, If you do a search on Youtube there is a video of me chasing a GT2 at Silverstone in my GAZ equiped Turbo, you can hear the front end skipping, had the fronts rebuilt/replaced a couple of times i think,at the end Ian G rebuilt mine and it felt for the short distance i drove the car a bit better.I then sold the car. I am Sure GAZ represents great value for money and they do improve each year apparently but they do seem a bit delicate at the front as i am quite gentle on cars most of the time.

Considering the way that all manufacturers and suppliers have increased their prices over the last year, I think that Id suggest KWV3 because theyre now looking like even better value.

I was advised its likely if I opt for GAZ I would need to spend more £ on maintenance over the years. No such issues with KW.

I think you will be very happy with the KW coilovers, I have mine set at the factory suggested settings and I find them very good on road and track, the track is where they really come alive though IME. On a recent day at Silverstone my racing driver instructor commented on how tight the car felt, which he found surprising considering the age of the car, and that's with no poly bushes, etc. Says it all really... Now that I've decided to go for the KW, I'm very excited and impatient. Like a child wanting his Xmas present! :) I've gone all out and am having any bushes that need changing replaced. (Most likely to be all of them!) Will need to find myself a driving instructor too and join you guys at some track days.

Unless there has been a significant change to the design/construction to the KW topmount camber plates, I would NOT order them with your purchase. I had them delivered with my race version suspension and they were an inferior product. My advice would be to get the Racers Edge version from the US. Or I think Olli's friend Atti might make a nice version also. The metal plate that the top of the shock attaches to bent out of shape ( I have pics) and we were told by the factory to just hammer them back straight. Not very good. Also, the design of their plate vs the R.E. offering meant that we got into the bump stops due to running out of travel. The RE ones give you significantly more travel due to a different design than the KW version.

I did this and Promax only needed to change 1 bush, maybe I was lucky. 25th March! at Bedford! Is Chris at CG fitting it for you? Edd

Thanks for this. I'll chat with Chris and decide what to do.

What do you think of the KLA offerings Pat? Simon

Chris at CG just carried out a suspension alteration on my Dads GT2 club sport (KW Manthey settup) I drove it before and after, and he did what he set out to do,a good guy, very enthusiastic and will make sure you are happy, you will be in good hands[:)] Look forward to a writeup on the installation and what you think!?

I've got Racer's Edge top mounts and KW Clubsport suspension. The handling is simply amazing when pressing on around the twisties and I can wait to get it on track. On the way there though, you actively avoid cat's eyes if you value your spine!
