Ooooo shiny....

Fen
Where did you get your 3mm bit from regarding the torsions.??
I have been told that each spline change [ both inner + outer ] is equivalent to 6.5 mm..
Ive just done my S2 .. i dropped it by 4 splines but it didnt seem enough ,i started out with a ride height of 350mm , from floor to rear wheel arch.. so im re-doing it tomorrow ,, another 2 splines...
I also had aprox 12mm to play with on the excentrics....as they were set in the middle....
Ive also found out that you need to let the car "settle" back down on its bars for a while to get the correct height... My car has been off its wheels for over a week now , so some settling is needed...

The rear beam is now nice + easy to remove.. as everything is now coated in a film of copper grease...
It took me aprox 30 mins to remove almost all the bolts tonight in readiness to do "the job" tomorrow.
The first time i did it it took me about 3 hrs as there were a few solid bolts etc...+ there was also a bit of alloy corrosion between the different steels etc....

Ps Frogisland is a good m8 of mine + weve been "trading experiences" for a while + know just how much he lowered his car by....His 968 CS IS possobly one of THE best out there + i can testify that it DOES handle extremely well,, now ....

Tony ..
Your KLA top mounts ?? how have you found them..??
Are they any harsher than standard.??
Any more noise .??

I think I confused myself - I remember now that Frogisland said he did 18mm or 3 splines and in my memory I had that as 3mm per spline, but you are right. I will nail all this down before we do the work next week, honest [8D] but thanks for pointing out my error.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Your experience seems to back up what I was thinking then; you plan 6 splines total which is somewhere around 36mm to 39mm. I might be tempted to go 7 splines but please let me know what you think of it after 2 more splines as it isn't until Tuesday that we're doing mine.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]From the pics Frogisland's CS looks very nice. I do like to see them with the side decal and the 18" wheels in white look fantastic.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Hey Fen
An update on re-re-indexing....
Just lowered the car off the ramp + it now sits at 620mm.[ floor to wheel arch, going vertically through the centre of the centre cap.] .That is with a re-index of 6 splines.[ both inner + outer ], the excentric adjusters were in the middle + have now been set at the lowest setting......also fitted KW coilovers to the whole car...
It used to sit at 657 at the rear b4 the indexing + b4 the fitting of the KW stuff....
The car has been back on its wheels for aprox 24 hrs now + has had a 30 mile drive also to settle the torsions down....Its also got aprox half a tank of fuel....It may settle down a tad more yet.. im hoping so..

Hope that gives you guide to what height you need to finally arrive at....
If you need any more help dont hesitate..........

Thanks Dave. I might go 7 splines then because I'd ideally like to have it with some fine adjustment either way on the eccentrics if possible. How does it drive on the KW's? Did you set them up as per the settings on 968UK?

Fen
If i was to do it again [], which i wont be doing....Ide drop it by 7 splines....
The KW,s are NICE..[:D][:D]
I have set them all to full soft for now , until i get the car geometry done ,which is happening on Tuesday..
Ive also fitted M030 arbs along with a FULL set of Powerflex bushes..incl the front wishbone ones...
ive noticed a GREAT improvement in the handling + ride quality. The car is NOW very planted + goes exactly where you point it...
I just need some "solid" top mounts , which will be getting done soon...They "shouldnt " affect the geometry...
I wish you well with yours + hope you dont find any siezed bolts etc ....
I set the car up[ ride heights] to be 620mm at the rear + 635 mm at the front.. it actually looks level , + a huge difference to what it was..[:D][:D][:D][:D]

Thanks Dave, I'm very pleased to hear all that [:)][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]The set-ups sound pretty similar: I have Powerflex bushes for the front wishbones (and the Weltmeister rear ones that Powerflex don't do) plus a new pair of 968 castor mounts. My ARBs are due this week and being Weltmeister they don't use rubber bushes (I believe). I also have a pair of Lindsey Racing rose jointed adjustable top mounts which from what I can see so far are superb - you need to get the 2 1/2" ones for KW and then get the spring caps turned down slightly to suit the 60mm springs though, which I got done for £5 while I waited at the place that balanced my bottom end [;)][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]My fronts are already done and the rear eccentrics have been loosened off under 4 years ago so hopefully the rest of the rear won't give any problems. Tuesday is the day to find out...[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Hows the re-indexing going Fen.???

Looks like youve done a FULL strip down of the rear end.....

Ill get myS2 back tomorrow , after the geometry set up , so will be able to report more then.....

Dave,[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]We did remove the whole beam. The main reason was to change the fuel and brake lines to genuine replacements - since we were (nearly) in there anyway. I'm glad we did though because all the mounts were totally shot. £220 for mounts I didn't expect is the the downside though.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]The arms are off the beam and it will be painted, the Weltmeister bushes fitted (rubbers ones were perished to death) and the torsions re-indexed on the bench before it all goes back together. That should hopefully all happen while I'm away in France [;)].[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Just picked up 4 of these from the paintshop [:)][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Hopefully SOON......

Fen
Sounding good .. the wheels look good too....Like the "gunmetal" colour.. Are they 968 wheels.??? ie 7-5/17 fronts + 9/17,s rears.??

It is starting to look like we will be having a very meaningful game of "Spot the Original Bits" when The Fenmobile finally breaks cover.[:D]

[8D] Slurrrrp! [8D]

(Insert insanely jealous smiley here). They'd look great on an alpine S2...... []

John - I'm hoping there will be virtually nothing untouched on the car apart from the transmission and some paint so hopefully not too much will look original. I think Carl and I are diametrically opposed in the major work going on just now.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Tony - I have seriously toyed with the idea of an orange stripe but decided against the wheels. The plan for the road wheels is black with a silver rim; the anthracite 17's are for track tyres.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Dave/Mik, I like the white 968 with gunmetal Cups...[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
