Owners Roll Call !

Hello Sian and hello Gary

Great to hear that you are enjoying ownership, and it's great to welcome you to the forum [:)]

Hi Jeff
Sorry to diappoint but if you seriously want a better car then I would suggest selling your present beloved at cost and adding to that to buy your next Porsche.Spending large amounts of your "hard earned" on your present cherished vehicle seldom yields any returns so to be brutally honest I would sell up and anticipate buying what you really want!
Sorry to be harsh but I'm pretty sure most people out there would agree with me.

I thought I would intoduce myself as a "newbie" 924 owner. Iv'e recently sold a TVR Chimaera upon the impending arrival of our first baby so feeling a bit down about not having anything to tinker with I went out and bought a 924. The plan is to tidy the car up over the next few months, enjoy the summer and run it until I can a buy a 911 to sit next to it.

Never owned a Porsche before and at 19 years old the doors shut better than they did on the TVR. I'm actually looking forward to finding some time to tackle a few of the things that need looking at.

Does anyone know how to replace the cables on the sunroof, as the last careful owner removed them, along with what I assume to be th sunroof relays?????

Does anyone meet up in the West Sussex area?

Hello Jeremy

Welcome to 924 ownership [:)]

Give Peter Skelton a ring on 01293 886759 and he will tell you all about the Sussex meetings.

Hello all. My name is Mark Johnston. I am new to your forum, but certainly not to the wonderful world of 924's. I live in the US, but stumbled across your forum and thought I needed to learn even more so I joined in. Excellent board by the way.

I got my first 924 in 2001, it was a completely useless 1977, and basically was given a complete drivetrain stripping and then donated to a crusher. This is where my obsession, as my wife likes to call it, began.

I quickly acquired another '77, that just needed a bit of TLC. Well, I tend to do things BIG or not at all, so it ended up getting an interior conversion from brown/tan to black, new carpet, and a paint job.

During that time I had decided to get a couple of parts cars and scavenge off them and sell what I don't need or want. Picked up a '79 and an '82. The '82 became the next project, and the '79 is history.

Sold the '77 soon after restoration. This is where the justification for my obsession began. I made a fair bit of money on that car and decided to get deeper into it. Now it is a home based business gone mad.

Started looking more into the race cars and wanting to acheive that lower wider look while still being streetable. More power was needed of course (I am an American after all, we must do that to everything) but I insist on keeping things Porsche, so I get what I can out of the 2.0L by way of turbo, or carbs depending on the body style.

To make a long story short...

I currently have 5 924's, 3 of which will someday feel the road again, and 2 for spares. Two of the three that are being resurected will be replicas of the some of the early road race cars that saw a bit of success in the SCCA production class in the early '80's. Specifically the D-Production 933 cars. The other one is going to be a Carrera GT replica with a custom turbo set up.

I do all of the work myself in a small shop that I have. I fabricate the fiberglass panels and body kits myself (which are available for sale worldwide also, hint hint). I do my own body work and paint (and other willing patrons if necessary). When that's all done I rebuild the motors and do the necessary modifications to increase the performance. I am hoping to have the first of the 933's completed by April 05. That depends on how busy the business end of it is over the winter.

Now that I read this...I am obsessed, oh well.

Anyway, I hope to be able to contribute to your forum as well as learn from it.

Cheers

Hi Jeremy, I'm in East Sussex. Drop me a line off forum and we'll meet up if you like. I've had some dealings with sunroofs (see posts for many and varied frustrations being vented on forum [][]). mail me at philip.edwards@fsmail.net

The Sussex meetings are first Tuesday of the month at the Gardeners Arms in Ardingly, although next one (7th December) will be at OPC Mid-Sussex, Burgess Hill. The OPC ones are usually good fun, and a great opportunity to have a nose around, especially for us 924 owners who normally wouldn't dare go near an OPC [:D]

cheers .......... Phil

Hello All,
My Name is Brad, I own a 1981 924. This is my first Porsche. I bought it to use as a second car while I have my 1989 Golf GTI laid up for some work. I bought it as a non runner but for the price I can't go wrong and it gives me an excuse to tinker. It is a non runner right now as it has an electrical fault in the fuel system someplace. Hopefully I will get it sorted out and going strong in a few weeks.

Hi Brad, welcome to the forum. I hope we can help you on the way to getting your car back on the black stuff [:)]

Thanks Paul. hoping to get a bit of time to tinker this weekend. got a few spots on the body to sort and hopefull figure out the electrical fault.

My name is Noel Parker and in January this year I purchased a 1986 924S. The car has covered 71,000 miles and has reams of service history, service bills and all the supporting MOTs. The paintwork is excellent (Zermatt Silver) and the body work is good, with a few dings and scratches which I will attend to. The Porsche paint code is identical to the Audi paint code for the same colour, and my local Audi dealer supplied two spray cans. I have invested in a set of 17" Cup wheels which, although not original equipment for the 924S, really do compliment the appearance. I prefer the streamlined appearance of the 924S to the chunkier 944- each to his own.
The cream cloth interior is a little worn, so I have had some taiored seat covers made by GB seat covers in London. I have used GB before over the years and they are very reasonable priced. The seat covers fit extremely well and really make the interior feel like new. I have an immobiliser fitted and this contributes to a very low insurance premium for limited mileage through RH Insurance in Brentwood, Essex.
The car drives superbly- the 2.5 engine pulls strongly and is very responsive. I garage the car during the week and it is my weekend toy- I find myself getting up early on Saturday morning to take it on a run through the country, before the traffic builds up!
I thought long and hard before deciding on the 924S. My requirements were for a classic type German sportscar, 2 litres or over, preferably with a strong company history and preferably rust proof body work. Having been a Mercedes owner for some years, I considered the triumvirate: BMW, Merc and Porsche.
I actually believe that the 924 model is on the ascendancy- it is just starting to be considered as a classic, rather than an old entry level model, and this classic status will strengthen considerably over the coming years.
The Audi /VW origins in the early stages must be viewed in an absolutely positive way- Audi and VWs are very well engineered cars with a strong brand image.
The engineering quality of the 924 is excellent- what started as a good car was (as is the Porsche way) developed and refined over the years to result in a wonderful car. The solidity of the body and the well fitting doors (after 19 years) is impressive.
The bodywork is made of galvanised steel (with an aluminium bonnet) and the Porsche fits the category perfectly and is great fun to own and to drive.

What is noticeable in the club is the pride of ownership that most members feel- this again sits well with the 924 achieving greater classic status. I intend to keep my car for many years and I am very proud of its heritage and its development. I will give the car a full service through a specialist in a few months and I shall keep the body work in its current good condition (without any ideas of concourse preparation) -I want to enjoy the car and not be too worried about parking dents and scratches from less considerate motorists!
My car has recived positive comments from my teenage son and daughter and my neighbours -there is not another Porsche in our road!

Thanks to Paul Hedges for the register and for the excellent sticker.
I intend to attend some of the local Essex events and I will certainly take my car and my son to Brands Hatch in August. Th event on 1st May at Cornbury House coincides with my 23rd Wedding Anniversary, so that is 'under discussion'!

All the best,
Noel Parker

Hi Noel
Your new PAJ looks really very nice, welcome to the forum, why not bring your good lady to the Front Runner event and kill two birds with one stone. [:D] And now that you have one you will want it for life its a bug !

Marc

Hi Marc,
I read your column in Porsche Post last night - the evolution of your car sounds excellent-it would make a great article, with supporting photos.

I have a couple of questions: are the Cup 3 wheels on your car the same width for the front and the rear, and is the offset 52,3?

Where did you get your seats retrimmed in leather and roughly what was the cost?
Is the quality of stitching etc. of a good standard?

Thanks and best regards,
Noel

Hi Noel

Thanks for your reply, to answer some of your questions, the wheels (Cup 3's) had to be two sets of fronts in order to fit the wheel bays on the 924, i would love to get fatter rubber under the rear but without major modding this really can't be done, and yes the offset is 52,3 i can doulbe check that if you require as Porsche Shop surplyed and fitted for me.
The re-trimming on the seats was carried out by again the Porsche Shop, however they do sub-contract out as they themselfs didnt do the re-trim. They are trimed to a very high standard i must say, im very pleased with them, the cost was quite expensive really but i think worth it, £1200 or there abouts, this was for the two front seats and the complete rear, i also have the carpetted piece removed from the gearstick and re-trimmed in leather as well.

If you are attending this weekend (Front Runner) please come across and have a look, i will be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Marc

Hello,

I'm a newish member having only bought my '86 924S about 6 weeks ago. It is black with the grey pinstripe interior, has 89k miles on it and as far as I can tell is completely original.

A big hi to everyone I met at Frontrunner! see you at Brands?

Dan

Hello Dan - good to see you there [:)]

Take a look on www.cannell.co.uk - there's a good chance that your car will be shown on there (click on events then FrontRunner 05)

Stay tuned for future 924 events!

Hello out there. I have owned my 1988 Black 924s Le Mans Limited Edition Porsche for six years. it has done 82,000 miles, and has a 2.5 Porsche engine. I feel privileged to own this car as only 980 Le Mans models were ever made, and only 37 white and 37 black ones were brought into the UK. It is black with Turquoise detailing and has the telephone dial wheels. Is has an electric removable sunroof.
I love my car and take great care of it. Everything is original and if anything has needed replacing, service wise, I always try to put original porsche parts back, even though it could be cheaper with other brands.
As so few were manufactured how many others in the club have one. Let us know.
Happy motoring. Chris.

Just a postscript for my last message, I have not received my window sticker yet. I have been a member of the club for six years.

you say you have been a member for 6 years. if so, then why does your profile say that you are a non member? perhaps thats why you havnt got a sticker yet.
