R35 GTR v My 944 Turbo

I'm surprised at anyone trying to compare a 944 and a (old) Skyline. Surely they are philosphically quite different cars? Maybe just naivety but I consider 944s as having cracked benign and involving sports car handling without 4wd, computer assistance, traction control etc. etc.

Not sure which scooby you are talking about but the one i looked at in the same class as the 968 was 550bhp. The 968 being race prepped with a chipped engine. Not being funny but isnt that lap time difference kind of to be expected? Its got twice the power near enough?

Posters on enthusiast sites commonly overestimate the ability of their favourite models. Scoobynet is full of people who think that their WRX will out-drag a 911 Twin Turbo, which it wont. Just because its quick and you like it doesnt make it best...

Very true. However the fastest time at the Snetterton round was a full 2 seconds quicker then Jason Plato's BTCC lap record so the potential is certainly there for a very quick car (when its had its nuts tuned off), also similar performance to a carrera cup race car.

For me it will be very interesting to see what the performance level is like for the EMC 968 turbo.

Sorry Neil, that wasnt too clear. I wasnt referring to the Time Attack cars: I just used Imprezas as an example.

The R32 and R33 are superior to the Porsche 944 Turbo, and they cost a lot more too.

The new R35 is considered to be more than a match (or should it be the other way around) for the 911 turbo so Porsche brought forward the latest one with 16% more power?

Didnt it set a production car lap record at the ring earlier this year ..................................and has just bettered it?

The real problem is image..................drifting comes to mind [&o][&o]

As a new 944 owner I've not made an effort to post here yet as my car is still in storage so haven't much useful to say.. but...on this subject..

I do some work for Dunlop Motorsport in Europe, we took an R35 to the ring this year and wiped the floor with the 911 on track times. It proved such a thorn for porsche that they actually bought an R35 themselves and put their driver round the ring to disprove the time claimed by Nissan, saying it was impossible...Nissan kept quiet for a few weeks then released the video of the lap, proving the time. It's also clear by the video that the car could go faster. and it was on road legal Dunlop tyres.

Perosnally I've currently got an R34 GTT Skyline, I never liked the four wheel drive GTR, always preferred RWD. It's set up for the ring, some minor engine tweaks, but mostly modified for handling, so uprated suspension, roll bars, brakes, cage etc. With toyo 888s it was an incredible car round the ring and got me round in 8.49, which is pretty respectable (with only 20 laps under my belt). I had a 33 GTR for a short while, again with minor engine mods and the power was incredible, but never felt as planted or 'flickable' for want of a better word than the 944 turbo...
I think pound for pound you will always get more performance out of the skyline, but you need to spend a lot more on handling to get it go round corners better than the porsche...

here's the video of the R35 GTR breaking the Ring produciton lap record (since been beaten again by the Radical, however it is arguable how much of a production car a Radical really is.....with a complicated procedure just to start it and get it ready to run)

Gavinm, interesting points from an owner of both cars. Whats the suspension setup on your turbo like? Nice choice of cars btw, the 190's are great aren't they. Got a 3.2 190E in the fleet atm.

Cheers fella,

turbo is stil running it's original set up, the R34 has full D2 track suspension....

love the 190, we are currently rebuilding that specifically for the ring, it's a kind of DTM tribute by us, the 2.3 cossie lump is getting a full rebuild, we have carbon buckets, full cage and some awesome Brabus monoblock calipers to go on along with some rather cool early 90's Ronal alloys....it's going to be a stripped out sideways big grin factor racer!

I do indeed! its a bit of an obsession to be honest and as i only live a 2 1/2 hour drive away its too close to ignore....

Well take a 2.5L 951 with a tired motor. Add a larger turbo and I/C. Use E85 and run 1.4bar and this is what you get. He had pretty much a stock setup I believe. I had better tyres than him. I also had some real problems with my KWs that day and couldn't hit some important apexes. Had my setup been decent I would have taken him under brakes. Had he the same level of tyre as me, he would have held his gap. Good fun all the same.

This is not a critique.....................

Unless proven otherwise, any track day *cough* racing [;)] is all down to the drivers and the size of their cahoonas [8|] and wallets.

He `may` just be a slower driver. He `may` not know the circuit as well. He `may` not want to drive it 99% in case he trashes his pride and joy. He `may` be on ordinary tyres with new blocky tread.

I hear so often about the "tw*t" in his Lamporarrinoble etc who held everyone up. Admittedly some people are arrogant enough to think that as they`ve a car that should be quick no-one can or should be able to overtake them but in a lot of cases so what, he`s got a nice car, he wants to learn it but isnt as proficient (or daring) as others but it is quick so is difficult to get past.

You also hear about the £10k track day special who boasts of eventually overtaking a GT3RS etc. Thats fine too as I wouldnt want to trash my brand new £100k Porker for sake of staying clear of someone who cares but doesnt have the same investment/risk but it doesnt necessarily mean he`s a better driver.

There are so many imponderables on a track its impossible to tell who is right or wrong.......hence forums and bar room chatter [:D]

Discuss..............................................

Ive owned an R33 GTS-T Type-M, which isnt dissimilar to the R34, I believe. A GT-R is far quicker in my opinion and its only a four wheel drive car when the rear loses grip: if you dont need it then the front wheels arent driven.

I believe that Dirk Schoysman would prefer a GT-R to a GTS-T (R33/R34) around the ring too...

So most of the time its a rear wheel drive car with 50/50 weight balance and a turbocharged engine, a bit like a 951 :p.

Sorry, had too...

I always understood though that the basic layout of the car makes them fairly tail happy so the 4wd kicks in more then you might imagine, or this may just be a side effect of the rear wheel steering system in the earlier skylines (something I understand they disable on track/race cars).

Dirk Schoysman, man would I like his job. One of the very few jobs I would take a pay cut to do.

From memory they disable the rear wheel steering, as youve said, but retain the 4WD system. Id defy anyone to drive a 951 around the 'Ring in anything like a GT-R's time (and Ive done some alright times myself, although my last lap was in a £300 1,600cc Skoda Felicia).
