Refresh time!

I feel your pain with bodge jobs - I've been slowly working through a never ending list of jobs on mine since I recovered it from the "specialist" back in 2018.

Door hinges - I tackled the door alignment on my car because it had replacement doors fitted due to corroded outer skins. I used the Porsche 924 manual for guidance as most of the stuff that is standard between the 924 / 44 is documented in the 924 and the 944 manual should be read with reference to the 924 manual.

You can get replacement pins that go through the hinges - it may be that they have worn after years of opening and closing - on my list of parts as well.

Hinge pin - 321831421 - £6.30 each! (4 of them for 2 doors)

I bought a couple of pins years ago, then had a closer look and it seemed more likely the bush it fits into was worn.

Thanks David, EMC are going to look at them but they too thought it was the hinges, I really didn't fancy taking the doors off on my own so happy to leave it to them.

Have been very distracted with the Compact this last couple of weeks, been really enjoying it and so far I've fitted a vanos rebuild kit, replaced the cam cover gasket and everything in the cooling system - it was all a bit of a state (as I'd guessed). Lots more still to do, but could probably put it into daily use now.

Hi Peter,
Was transferring some VHS tapes to my DVR in preparation for transfer to DVD so I can upload to PC found some video of you (along with me and Steve Cox) at Prescott, will throw it up on you tube when I get some time - I think we all showed how tricky that short length of hill is to perfect!

I had a vague recollection of you having a door pin or hinge issue before - could have been on the red one - but I thought it was before the white one went in for the major works, broken hinge pin or detached bracket? or maybe I mixing my Peters!

Tony

Cool! I found a photographers pic I must have purchased on the day recently (can't find it now, will have a look later), that was back when the car was completely standard. I think it might even have been my first drive on a track of any sort (followed closely by a trackday at Donington when the bug really bit). It was a massive eye opener to me when after a morning of practicing and thinking the pace was ok we were bundled into an old Cavalier with an instructor at lunch and shown how it should have been done.

Great memory- I think you might be right about previous door pin issues, it's embarassing how much I've forgotten. I think it was the white car as there was some paint chipped off from where the door had been rubbing in which case it might have been sorted out by JZ Machtech for me, it would have been that long ago.

If only I could remember what I did yesterday :) I remember the door hinge issue as I don't recall anyone else having one - you were just that lucky! was it a detached hinge?

I'll have a look through my receipts when I get a moment and see if I can find out what it was.

I did find where I put the pics from Prescott, here's the best one

Peter's going so fast with so much grip that the air disturbance has been picked up by the photographer!

Hi Peter

Glad to see you've resurrected the old girl. Hope you get out to the track in the near future and remember why you started this quest so many years ago.

Best

Patrick

I thought everyone found a rainbox at the apex? Just me then? :ROFLMAO:

Your car looks great there Tony, happy days!

Hi Patrick, glad you're still here, how's your car going? I've been out of circulation so long I've lost track. Did/do you have a rennlist thread or did I imagine that?

Hi Peter

My car hasn't run since an engine fire back in 2017. Disastrous culmination to a long and expensive 3.2ltr 16v race motor. Ran it once on the dyno (618whp @ 16psi). Then a couple of laps on a test day. A day later we did 1 lap at the annual event before smoke filled the cabin due to oil getting on exhaust via massive cracks in the block. Still not sure why this happened. Just looking at maybe putting it back together to sell. Covid hasn't helped though.
Best of luck with yours. :)

Gee that's bad luck Patrick, time flies and this year's a mess for Motorsport have you hung up your helmet now then or will you be trying something else? only I guess
this catastrophe has put you off getting the bird repaired and back up running ?

How did you get on with the box / rectangle rear beam which I saw on Rennlist as bending for some people for the prototypes? did this get sorted with a stronger gauged wall thickness or a bigger box section etc..? Only I'm looking at having one made but in Round tube and maybe even titanium.

Just starting considering refurbishing the car. Long process. Probably try and sell it after that.

Yes, the torsion tube carrier worked out fine once we made our own out of thicker gauge steel. I think most guys would probably have been ok with the original but ours put too much stress through it from downforce and cornering loads.

I'm very sorry to hear that Patrick, I guess it's always a risk when the limits are being pushed, but to go to all that work and not get all of the enjoyment out of it is gutting.

Thought it was about time for an update. In the last week of October I finally got my car back with all the jobs completed and with a proper remap. Sadly due to a lack of dry days I've barely had a chance to put many miles on it. It's not without quite a few things still to be sorted, but I am pleased with the way the engine is running now that I'm able to use all of the revs.

Obviously driving for fun at the moment is not allowed so decide for yourself whether I was visiting a bubble, out for some exercise or doing some essential shopping when I stopped to take this picture [;)]
