Respray progress

Thanks Ed, yes that's a good write up although from memory there were warnings about fumes when heating the lenses which would be a worry []. There's an ebay listing that appears regularly which is a kit for a similar design, although again you need to mould the lens yourself. The big plus with getting P4P to make some up is that the coatings they use will mean they should last a lot longer.

Its looking very good, bet you cant wait,

You could say that! I think I'd started to lose interest in it over the last couple of months, but seeing it like this makes me very keen to get behind the wheel again.

Yes I believe Simon got it from GT racing. I don't think fitment should be an issue, it looks straight and true and has some give in it to enable us to bend it if necessary. I think Alan at the bodyshop is going to try to blend it in seamlessly if it's good enough. I've decided to strip all the headlining and paint the inside of the roof now, I'll just leave the sunvisors, rear quater trim and A pillar covers in place, the rest from the carpets upwards will be just painted metal. I'm starting to feel quite confident we might almost completely offset the additional weight of the half cage and SC (nearly 50kg I guess). If only I could come up with a good solution for losing weight out of the doors without resorting to having to use door bars on the cage.
Quite a horror story but good for you to sort it out instead of scrapping it. I hardly dare look behind my sill trims! Presumably the sunrof panel can only be fixed in place? It's tempting to think of a carbon roof which replaces the very heavy standard one, with all the interior trim in place and working as normal. Having just had my roof in and out, while replacing the plastic gear wheels, it's a pretty awkward one-man job, and a lightweight version would be very desirable. I might take the roof out on sunny days more often (if we ever had any!).

I never use the sunroof so it'll be fixed in place, although I'm pretty sure you could use the frame from the old sunroof and keep it electric if you wanted (or convert to the manual latches if you wanted to save some more weight). From what I understand the early cars have a much lighter sunroof so this might be a possible swap too. I did contemplate completely removing the roof and either fitting a composite replacement or the top from a non sunroof car, but as I was only going with a half cage I decided against this on safety grounds.

Just flat and polished two of my cars yesterday, the results were great but i had forgot how much hard work it is.... Keep up the good work.

Steve.

I hadn't realised it had been quite so long since I last updated this thread [:)]

Latest progress is the roof is now finished, the carbon sunroof panel has been bonded in and filled seamlessly. This looks an awful lot better than I thought would be possible. I suspect when painted in gloss it will be possible to tell whats been done, but this doesn't concern me, it is mainly a track car after all. There's a chance that we may get some cracking over time where the panel joins the roof, but we'll worry about this if it happens, but the panel feels suprisingly rigid now it's bonded in place.

I was lucky to get hold of a pair of 7.5" x 17" wide Cup 1's (thanks RHT45) and these should allow me to go to 235 or 245 wide at the front which should help both front end grip and braking (a proper adjustable bias setup is planned to further improve the latter, the brakes are quite tricky to keep close to their maximum without locking the fronts at the moment).

There are other updates and pics on my website, but most have been covered in other threads so I wont go over them again here. Pics from today are here. I think it's really starting to get there now, the interior is almost ready for paint and the exterior isn't too far off either [:D].

Looking good Peter, it's better than eastenders this! What'll be the shock you can cover on New Years Day? You want to give me your front bumper? Cool!

Peter - look forward to these updates....a little slower than mine - you have some way to go to get it all together.....March 6th? Why did you go for the sunroof infill as opposed to a replacement roof - 924's are very cheap for the donor.....if you can find a non-sunroof.

Re tyres - 235 fronts on 7.5 are within limits, but you really need 8" for 245. R888's/DZ02's/MPSC's etc at 235 are adequate, myself and BigDave have never had any problems, anything wider will place undue stress on your car/components. I'll take you out on the 6th and show you that 235/265 is not the weak link - it is the driver behind the wheel.

I did consider changing the roof skin, but decided I'd prefer to keep the integrity of the original as I wasn't using a full cage. I like the shape of the roof now, and hasn't cost much in absolute terms. I'm curious to know how the weight compares, I suspect there's not that much in it, so it'll be purely down to how it ages as to whether it was a good idea or not.

Toyo listed 245 as fitting 7.5" wheels for the T1-R's, but now I've checked they don't even seem to do 888's in that size anyway. I'm sure they would be overkill, the balance of my car isn't far off being perfect for my needs and I'm very happy with it overall, although I do need slightly stiffer springs at the rear as it has a slight understeer bias (I'm using the rear arb to qwell this at the moment). The braking is where I'm hoping to get bigger benefits, the front is prone to locking, the brakes are really superb but the pads have a fairly narrow threshold (they can be quite grabby) so a bit more grip cannot be a bad thing until I've got a neater solution in place.

I'd be very keen to take you up on your kind offer on the 6th, I'd like to get an idea of the lines around Oulton as I've not been there before.

I'm hoping my car will be finished at the end of next month, I think it is possible and Alan seems very keen to get it out of his way [:D].

Went to see my car today, quite a bit of progress has been made, the outside is in a final coat of primer and the inside has been painted. Trouble is it's not the right colour! [] I'm really not sure where I've gone wrong, I can only guess that the paint name or code I was given was incorrect as it all checks out with the vendor of the paint. Thankfully no real harm done and Alan has been very understanding. It's obviously added more time onto the job but it can be put right.

I don't half feel a pillock...

The outside of the car is in grey primer, as you can see below the interior is almost as blue/violet...

This picture shows some white for comparison, here's my unpainted bumper visible against the interior colour.

The colour of the roll cage in a previous post was actually GP White I'm told (it was apparently just put on as a base coat), I thought it wasn't quite as bright as I wanted, but it was a lot closer than this one! Wierd thing is, in the tin it didn't look this blue and apparently when wet it looked much lighter.

What is interesting is that the name Glacier White isn't coming up when the paint code (L3AU / L3AT) I was given is entered, instead it says it's Fearn White which I'm led to believe is a Vauxhall colour.

This is the colour I wanted - a very bright white, much more so than GP White, the pic below shows it quite well.

and the colour I have is more like this:

So I've now got to quickly choose what colour to go for (by tomorrow really!), Carrara White is high on the list purely because it's fairly close to what I had in mind. I've also seen a white on (I think) Fiesta ST's that I really like, but it's quite a high risk to choose something I don't know the code for, and the base white Fen suggested is a bit of a gamble too as I've not seen it in person.

Peter, why not be different and go flat white? I think it would look really mean on your track beast with the mahooosive front bumper - should hide any imperfections in your roof too[;)] Darest you!?

I actually think flat paint tends to show imperfections in the surface from what I've seen?
Don't worry about going wider on the fronts either Peter, offsets and geometry notwithstanding. Depending on what Arms you've got, but I know of people running over 300mm on the fronts on 951 race cars. I'm just about to do 285s all round in slicks. They fit without modifying the bodywork....just.

Thanks Ben, I hadn't thought of flat white. I'm not sure if it'd be better to do that as a wrap afterwards, but to be honest I quite enjoy polishing the car and I can't imagine the matt finish would be that rewarding to work on.

Cheers Patrick, as it's happened I'm going to end up with 225's on the front again [:)]. It seems that whilst I can go wider with T1-R's Toyo only recommend the narrower width when using 888's on 7.5" wheels. At least the offset of the wheels is better now! I suspect I'll hunt down some 8" wide wheels for the front at some point, would be nice to do this in combination with changing the hubs to the Aluminium ones which should help keep the unsprung weight down.

It's getting there, getting there.

I just looked at the first post in this thread - January 2008. You must be getting pretty impatient now and only 2 months to Oulton Park - eek []

Peter are P4P going to be making GTS lenses? Im tired of baking acrylic...

Simon

They said they could do it, they'd just need a set of covers to work from. Not quite sure how you'd want to secure them, but I'd have been tempted to get them to put a black border around the edge and simply mastic them into place. As it is the Deutschnine ones are going to be finished soon and I'll be going over to a set of them as the quality should be fantastic (not cheap I admit, but worth every penny to me).
