Looking good, even if the colour isn't right. If you want (as I think you do) eye-watering, searing white then plain base is the way to go. Everything else is tinted base and hence by definition toned down. I'm a big fan of flat paint, but only in dark colours (possibly only black in fact). I think white needs to be shiny.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm after. Ok, you've convinced me, I think I'll ask Alan to do a test piece and see what it looks like.
It's still bugging me that I don't know why the colour ordered isn't right [
Paul, you're absolutely right, I've not done a track day in probably 14 months and am starting to go a bit (more) insane...

Ok, definately not going (completely) mad... This Rennlist thread shows loads of Glacier White 993's, whilst you can see some blue in the shadows it's nothing like the duck egg blue I've ended up with.

I've just got back from seeing and approving the new colour. Given the previous one was a non starter we specified the brightest white the supplier could manage, what surprises me is they still have to mix it up, so they couldn't just supply a base white colour [&:]. Whatever the actual case, I consider the new colour a great success (thanks Fen), the pic below doesn't show the brightness well (it's much too too dark) but it does show the colour differences. I had to look very carefully at the alpine white to recognise it - I knew it was cream coloured but didn't realise just how off white it was.
The test was done on my original sunroof, the two outside pieces are the old Alpine white, the left middle stripe is the rejected colour and the middle right is the new white.
Alan still seems hopeful he can get it finished before the end of this month, as it's booked into RPM for a service, mot and thorough checkover from the 2nd onwards. It then needs to be ready to drive on the 5th to get to Oulton Park [
]. I can't help feeling there's a hell of a lot still to do but have my fingers crossed.

That looks like a result, though I'm a bit nonplussed why they can't just sell you the base they tinted to get to that.
I've given up trying to understand paint [8|] Seems rather odd to me too. It really is a brilliant colour (in both senses of the word) so I don't think much can have been added (it's possibly a bit towards the cool/blue side of white (rather than cream) which would have been my preference anyway if I'd been given a choice).

Nice and white, get yer sunglasses out [8D]
Is it an actual named colour with it's own stock code so that you can mix it up again in the future (should anything untoward happen).
I do know that every few years the paint manufacturers seem to completely change their systems (so they can sell you a new set of base stock probably [8|] ) so it could be unwise to use a plain base white as in a few years time it 'could' be different. If you have a known stock colour from a mix then you can always mix it up from whatever the curent batch of base stocks are.
Just a guess [&:]. I think I have only painted 2 white cars in 4 years of spraying and they both had various yellows and indeed black in the mix, admittedly in tiny proportions.

Thanks Paul, that makes sense.
Yes they're going to supply the details as well as a spare can of paint and some for touch up. They've suggested it should be quite an easy colour to match at a later date which bodes well too.
Don't start me on stripes Ed [
] If it looks a bit too much then I might well add some vinyl or decals to break it all up.

Another update (sorry if this is getting boring) but I'm delighted to report it's now painted [

My pics aren't great as the light inside wasn't brilliant, but the colour is exactly what I wanted and finish is excellent when you're up close (considering its not been polished yet).
As ever there are a few more pics here. The really great news is that it should be ready for Oulton Park next week (pending any unforseen problems of course). There's still a service and an MOT to be fitted in so it's going to be tight, but it's looking a possibility [
].
It's too early to fit stone guards so I'm a bit worried about it getting chipped, but I have to keep reminding myself I cannot get too precious about it. It will go back for final polishing and other finishing touches after the trackday, so most things could be sorted out then if needed. I might try to find a supplier of the low tack tape that new cars have on them to cover the most exposed areas until the paint has hardened (I haven't the foggiest who would supply this so would appreciate any hints).

Thanks Mark [
] The wheels are going to be the same white too, although I haven't ruled out doing them later on in another colour (or black) if it's a bit too much. It really is white you know. Very, very white [
].
The roof has come out much better than I thought possible, you can see it's there when you know it, but I'm not sure if most people would notice. However when it's moved into daylight will be the real test I suspect.

Peter, just mask off the places where the stoneguards are normally fitted until you get time to fit them,as Paul said about white colour paints i have seen yellows, blues, and blacks added to get the correct white colour.
May have a run down to Oulton to watch you lot, my 944 is SORN but if you see a blue B3 Alpina (B3 ALP) say hello, i will have my helmet with me !

I'm afraid I haven't the foggiest how heavy it's going to end up Nick, I know it's not going to be really light, but there's still more that can come off (without having to get out the hole cutter or remove the underseal). I was rather suprised by the weight of some of the left overs I took home the other day, there must have been about 50kg of odds and sods I guess.
Thanks James, I've found a tape which I think might be ideal, it's here and hopefully shouldn't look too obvious.
The dash is a project for later Paul [
] I fancy retrimming it in black alcantara but only after I've seen what can be done to save a bit more weight from it/under it. There's a lot of the loom to come out too...

It's a long time I've done anything fun with my car (or even driven it, to be honest), but I'm now slowly trying to pick up where I left off.
The bodyshop have been doing some more work for me and have just emailed me the following picture [
] I'm hoping to go and have a look this week, so will post some pics when I do.
